BIG TIP:

For the past couple of days, I've spent some time talking with Aweber, PayPal and my hosting companies. I have had them view and analyze my websites and business profiles to ensure that I'm compliant with their terms. The information I've received has proven to be extremely valuable and could possibly prevent any problems I may have faced in the future, had I not taken this step.

Business owners are wasting money, getting sites shutdown and getting their PayPal accounts frozen, simply because their businesses aren't optimized and are not compliant in the eyes of their service providers. I encourage you, as business owners to be proactive, instead of reactive. You'll be glad you did.

With a company like Paypal you want to be careful. Bringing attention to your account isn't always such a great idea if you are doing things that are deemed against their terms of service. They have a tendency to act before asking questions.

WillR, talking with them is a good way to find out if you are doing things that are against their terms of service. And... How about reading their terms of service?

Nothing's foolproof. The thing is, now that I've talked with them, I don't have to say, "I wish I had talked with them before my account was frozen". Now that I've had these conversations, in the event something happens, I can at least say, "Hey, I talked with Brian operator #12345 and he said there was no problem. Here's the date and time we talked." That may give me a little leverage (or not).

  • Thanks for the Big Tip!! That is a really good idea to check with paypal, Aweber and your hosting company to make sure you are compliant. I had not thought about that. It would be a shame to put a lot of work and effort only to have your account/site banned.

I agree with Will, this is a bad idea. Reading PayPal's TOS will not help for many reasons why accounts are frozen. Neither will calling PayPal and speaking with some operator.

Would you send all your bank records and financials to the IRS to have them voluntarily audited just to make sure you paid every penny owed?

hey kindsvater. Thanks for your input. As I said earlier, nothing is foolproof. I've made a ton of mistakes in the past. I got my account frozen and it literally ran me out of business. I make it a priority to be an ethical marketer and not the young renegade marketer I used to be. The deal is, PayPal is not in the business of shutting down accounts, nor are hosting companies in the business of shutting down websites. Anyone who thinks otherwise is... well, never-mind.

Nevertheless, while there are a few who will disagree, connecting with your suppliers, customers and the service providers, ensuring that together, you can understand exactly what it takes to make your business solid and efficient, makes perfect sense in my opinion.

      Thanks again for your opinion.

Sound advice, Lonnie. We live in the age of compliance. Those who ignore being compliant do so at their own peril. Every day we see more examples of the folly of pretending that the 'terms' don't apply to you. THEY DO!

    Lonnie,

I know your intentions are good and most companies will be more than happy to help you when you approach them like this but unfortunately Paypal are not like most companies. The main commodity they deal in is money and so they have a much less forgiving attitude. They seem to live by the motto "guilty until proven innocent".

In regards to their terms of service, yes, you'd be mad not to read them but unfortunately there are still a lot of grey areas where they can shut down businesses they don't like or deem too risky. If everything is fine it's just not worth bringing the extra attention to your account -- that's just my opinion though.
