Why did you become an internet marketer?

Hey all!

Since this is a community for internet marketers (and offline), I was wondering:

What made you choose this path?

For me personally, it was a desire to be my own boss, and set my own working time.

Regards
Andreas

P.S: I realize that there might be other posts like this, but I wanted to know from you guys personally

I've owned other businesses before, and I'm at a point in my life where running a "real-world" business seemed too intensive and clashed with other goals that I have.

By starting several online businesses, I didn't need the capital to throw up 4 walls, buy a building, or rent an office. I also didn't need to invest thousands into inventory.

I spent $10.87 on a domain, $9.95 on hosting, 5 minutes in Photoshop, and now I'm making a killing writing articles while developing other businesses. My last real-world business costed $50K to get started and two years to pay off.

I prefer the $20 to $50K any day of the week.

I'm retired and was getting quite bored with myself and just happened to see an article about it one day. I researched more and more and the more I read the more I liked. Now, I am doing this and not spending my retirement money at all but instead living off of my IM income so that is a huge thing to me and my wife.

    I like money.

Well, that and I have a young family to take care of. I've always hated the idea of ditching them in daycare, not to mention the extravagant costs. Yikes.

For me, also. This was my primary motivation for starting. (I began at the start of my second year at university, hoping that by the time I graduated, I'd have built up enough, or at least be well on the way to building up enough, never to have to "get a job".)

I chose IM as a way to get a little extra income for traveling.

I still work my full-time job, but gives me money for some of the extra things I want. I would quit my job and do IM full-time if I weren't so close to retirement and I have a fairly good pension I'd be giving up.

I decided to get started now and get my name out there for when I do retire, I will have an income stream ready.

Brilliant ... I hadn't seen that thought crystallized quite that way. I've been self-employed for 13 years now and the idea of trading my time for dollars has become one of my pet peeves. I'd developed a huge resentment of the idea almost without realizing it.
I talk to sharp, strongly self-disciplined people that feel like they need the [false] security of a job and it just drives me nuts. I can't get them to understand.

when I first started it was purely for the money. I was broke and unemployed living in a hotel. I have an 8th grade education so getting a decent job was out of the question.

Now I do it mainly to help people solve their problems and share my message and perspective on things with the world.

It's not always all it's cracked up to be. I became my own boss, and now I know why employees used to think I was a dick manager. I need to learn some people skills .

The learning and the money and the hours. I am in and just about out of the construction world. Most of the guys I spend my time with have very few goals, and can barley make it through the work day. When the go home they crack open a beer and watch TV. I am not like other people. I don't think any of us are. Most people believe what we do is a scam. They have no clue until one by one. We disappear and walk this life with the smiles and joy we knew we were meant to have. I have my retirement date set for June 14th. My 33 birthday. I will be at home with the kids the wife and my freedom. I love this business. Computers control the world. If you know how to control computers..... Well you know the rest.

  • I have been my own boss for 14 years running an off-line business that I still run. My health went bad a few years ago and I had more time at home and my husband pretty much runs the off-line business. Since I am home most of the time I looked to the internet to find a way to start an online business.

Several reasons! First, I hate the idea that one person (my Boss) can pretty much ruin my life by firing me. We always talk about not putting all your eggs in one basket. Well, a career is doing just that. Especially if your job is not very portable, meaning very specialized.
The next thing that made me choose this path was the book "rich Dad, Poor Dad" There is a section in there titled "mind your own business". I love it !!!!! and I still read that section although I have long since grown disappointed with Robert Kyosaky!
The last thing was my first sale online.........Oh my Goodness what a rush! I said to my wife " Mama, I created money out of nothing, just like the Fed !" I had a squidoo page (or was it Blogger?) with good content and not a single back link!

Anyways, it was a combination of things but being in control and not relying on the goodwill of a person or company was a big driver for me choosing this path.

    To your Success,

    Mike Aha

To get out of the rat race. I hate that if I wanted to take some time off I have to let my boss know and make sure someone in my department is cross-trained to cover for me while I'm gone.

I hate trading money for time and that I could work 100X more than what I do know and still get paid the same amount (I get paid salary).

Plus, I love the internet and I love business - the IM lifestyle is perfect for me.

I've become an internet marketer due to the frustration of not being able to find the right people whom I'd like to work with when I was an employee. I worked for the biggest software provider where we dealt with technical things on a daily basis (malware removal, Windows Update, WGA, etc). I handled people who are contented to know that 1 + 1 is equal to 2. I am the type of person who would think deeply how did 1 + 1 becomes 2. I'm not saying that I'm into the analysis-paralysis syndrome. I just pointed that as an example so you would feel how analytic I am. What would you expect? People are calling us everyday to fix computer security issues and when everyone in the department does not know the answer, they all run to me. The job was perfect for me. But the people I worked with aren't perfect for me. I am the type of a person who would rather go into "cutting the roots of the tree" to bring a RESOLUTION on the table instead of "cutting the twigs/branches of the tree" to bring a WORKAROUND to my boss. That's how they hated me. That's how I hated them doubly.

I've decided to be an IMer because I don't want to climb the corporate ladder anymore. I hated working with someone, whom I am obliged to call as a "boss," when all their reports are coming from me. I was a "boss" too but never did I oblige any of my subordinates to do the report for me. Yes, I delegated tasks but nothing more than what they've signed up for in their contract.

In my experience, I met lots of bitches in the corporate world. I'm going to make a bold statement in here but I am saying this with conviction that I feel it much better if I were in their position and they're the ones whom I should mentor. I'm not a frustrated employee or something because I'm the one their offering work and I'm not the one applying for it. It just really sucks to feel that I know better than them (not all of them but most...geessh).

    So that's the story....
