Stop saying "Thank you for purchasing my product"!

I just see a lot of info products which begin with "Thank you for buying my ebook/wso/video course"

The author, or seller 'thanks' the customer for doing him a favor by paying him and purchasing his product?

It should be like - The customer is lucky to get the amazing product for such a price. If a customer pays $10 for an ebook, it should have more than $10 worth of value in it. If the seller really believes in his product, he wouldn't say thank you but the opposite...

So it should be "Congrats on signing up for this course!" or something like that.

What say?

      I have to agree with Shaun here. When people send you their hard earned cash it's only decent to say thank you, even if they paid $10 for a $997 course or whatever.

      You thank the client for choosing you, you thank the client for trusting you, you thank the client to show him/her that he/she is valuable, you thank the client because it is about manners and professionalism, and the list goes on...

    I agree 100%......er well actually.....I used to agree with you.

    I have maintained for many years that the customer should be thanking us...in the same way that a doctor doesn't thank the patient. The customer is our patient and, as you say, if we've solved a problem for them....they 'should' be thanking us...however.

    in 2012....with all the hype, lack of manners and for many other reasons, I've changed my view.

    I think we should thank first, then go back into doctor mode and remind the customer what they bought, how it will help them etc etc.

    On the basis that a polite little note should be well received by the customer...why not thank them.

    I am not sure, but I think I did not see a thank you note from Steve Jobs when I bought my MacBook Pro. It was something like... "Congrats, you and your Mac were made for each other." That really gives it a premium feel.

    Since there are more experienced marketers out here, I cannot be arrogant and stick with what I am saying is right. But I personally feel that saying thank you makes the product go down in value a little.

    The gratitude should be shown in creating a amazing value inside the product which actually improves the life of the customer.

    Any how the difference in saying thank you and not saying is not that big and not going to affect any conversions because the customer has already bought it.

    So may be I will also start saying 'Thank You' in my products!

      I just bought from Apple.com yesterday and once the order was processed was taken to a "Thank You for Your Order" screen.

      If you truly believe that, then you need to break of the dodgy internet marketing world. You were exposed to long to all those clickbank sales pages and videos where... "I will see you on the next page"

      In my eyes, if someone acts like that where he goes all hyperactive, he is either 14 years old, or tries to hype a low quality product, like we see it in the internet marketing world all the time. Clickbank products advertising at it's best

      But please, NEVER congratulate me when buying something, that immediately lowers my respect for that product.

      I think the issue is your mindset. You think that extending common
      courtesy is actually displaying weakness when the opposite is true.

      One of the most powerful of all human needs is the need to be appreciated.

      Most people work hard for their money. If you want more repeat and referral
      business than you can handle make it part of your business plan to express
      appreciation to your customers every chance you get.

      I've built an international distribution business based 100% on doing this
      and teaching others how to do it, too.

        Actually, what I think he is saying is that BOTH are forms of being courteous, but "thank you" sounds like the seller is somehow too appreciative, while "congratulations" somehow shows the buyer is getting more value.

        Both are courteous in the OP's mindset.

        I'm not saying I agree with him, but trying to clarify what I think his position is.

          Yeah... you could certainly be right about that. The sentence I formed
          my interpretation on was when he wrote that saying thank you somehow
          lowers the value of the product. I think it adds value because the seller
          is, in fact, part of the product.

          Then again, there could be cultural differences in play as well.

            Ok the thread that was started is quite a split decision but a good one, but I feel the point is being missed here.

            It's basic manners to say 'thank you' especially in business. 'Congrats' does give you a feeling of premium level.

            The main point is, no matter how you thank your customer, the customer should have some form of feeling that they are appreciated and respected as it will make them buy from you again, plus they are human beings. If you do not even thank them or look after them, they will simply buy from someone else. The customer satisfaction and service needs to be taken into consideration, but also sometimes you can get some really wierd customers who are never happy regardless what you say, but as a product owner just take it on the chin and focus on the customers you do have

            but that's just my opinion

        Maybe because you wanted to get out of the traditional process of business, that when people buy things from you, there's nothing else to tell them but "Thank you, you just purchased a thing from me!" That's great of course. Congratulations to them they just bought something from you but more than that, congratulations to you something was bought from you despite huge competition out there! The thing is, there's nothing else to say after their purchase. It's a standard. It's a norm. It's culture. And whatever you want to say, maybe you should just add it up to the usual "Thank you for buying" but never remove it. It's what everyone need---gratefulness.

      I always thank people when they do what I want them to do - it's good manners. Steve Jobs may not have thanked you, but I'll wager the merchant who actually sold it to you did.

      Besides, I'm not really thanking them for buying something. I'm thanking them for trusting me enough to choose my offer out of all the possible things he could have done with his time and money.

    I have to agree with Shaun. Its natural to me to thank someone for investing in something i'm selling. Whether its a physical product in which I send out with a Thank You letter and discount, or an electronic product like an eBook. I like to thank them but also maek sure I speak to the value of the product.

    I think it's just good manners and it can get you a long way, as Shaun said.

    But the debate was between "Thanks" and "Congratulations" - I think the 2nd one gives you a more "premium" feeling as someone described here, but I think the product should be well worth it. Either way, if you don't say "Congrats", you should at least say "Thank you", rather than saying nothing at all.

    Up until this thread if you would have asked me for my advice on this I would have said to use something like, "Thank you for your purchase!"

    However, it just so happens that I've made A LOT of purchases this past week, and as a buyer with those transactions still fresh in my mind, I think the discussion in this thread has altered my thinking.

    I got a lot of "Thank You..." emails and one "Welcome!" email. My reaction to the "Thank You..." emails was feeling as if I had given something away whereas my reaction to the "Welcome!" email was a feeling I was getting something.

    I've received "Congratulations on your purchase!" style emails in the past as well and my recollection is feeling as if I got something with that one too.

    "Thank you," may be the polite thing to do, but from a psychological and customer satisfaction perspective, "Congratulations!" may be better.

    Anyone with me on this?

      I think saying 'congratulations' is a bit cheesy to be honest.

      However, saying 'thank you' is a natural thing to say and acknowledges the buyer spending their hard earned cash on one of my products.

      If somebody has $20 to spend and they decide to choose to buy my product with their hard earned $20 then I genuinely am 100% grateful that they have decided to invest that $20 in my product.

      The fact that out of all of the shiny new products out there, they decided to purchase mine, I think that it is an honour and I'm very grateful.

      I agree with the comment above about thanking them though and reminding them what a great investment they have made and how they will benefit from it.

      It actually had me rolling my eyes and thinking that one should not think more highly of oneself than one ought. :rolleyes:

    It's an interesting conversation, but it goes back to basic manners. I've been conditioned, from my time as a kid, to be thankful and respectful to everyone that offers a kind gesture to me. If someone buys my product, they are essentially placing their trust in and support for me. It might be cheesy to you, but I have to say "thank you" to this.

    "Congratulations" sounds cheesy and overly cocky to me.

    Maybe I'll give it some more thought and think of a better way of greeting customers, but until then, "thank you" seems to be the most suitable response.

      I'm sorry, but I just can't do that.

      I was raised to say thank you since I was a mere child as well as, please, thank you, and I'm sorry.

      These things are second nature to me, deeply ingrained into the very essence of who I am and as natural as my breathing.

      Quite frankly, I can't understand why you would instruct people to stop being polite. As a matter of fact, I believe that if one dropped that common courtesy extended to their customers and clients, they would experience a drop in sales. I'm certain that being polite and humble is a better business practice over being rude and pompous.

      And before you ask, no, I'm not willing to test that theory. There are some things that I do deem too risky.

    Each morning, I wake up and say a small prayer - just because I'm ALIVE!

    Not many people do. They take it for granted.

    But I believe my life is richer because of being grateful for much that I
    have and have enjoyed.

    Having people buy my infoproducts or support my non-profit work is on
    that list... so I say 'Thank you' (and sincerely mean it).

    The value I deliver ensures that there won't be any refunds :p

      I disagree with everyone saying this is a stupid topic for discussion. As a writer, I pay attention to the power of words. Changing even a single word can make a big difference (for better or worse), but the question is how can you tell which words will have the most positive impact?

      It is important to consider every word carefully, and I believe that this discussion is more worthwhile than some people realize.

    If they said "Congratulations! You just bought a cheeseburger." I would probably ask for my money back right there on the spot.

    Granted, the products we are talking about in this thread are different, but I still like "thank you" in most cases.

    However, there is a big exception, and that is anything that is an ongoing process after the purchase is made. Things like membership sites, learning courses, and forums don't feel like products, and a "congratulations" would feel more natural.

        I'm afraid it wouldn't make me feel awesome. It would make me feel like I was too dumb to make that realisation on my own and it had to be pointed out to me.

        Unless I won a competition or was a lucky person drawn out of a hat, I hate it when I'm congratulated for buying something. It makes me feel patronized, but that might just be my personal issue.

        Thanking someone for making a purchase is more than just courtesy. It is the beginning of a relationship built on respect and the foundation for future dealings. Congratulations is rather hollow in that respect.

        Right or wrong, that's how I feel. :p

            I can understand the "congratulations" angle, but I'll stick with thanking.

            What you need to keep in mind is that there are plenty of people out there trying to sell stuff. The consumer has a lot of choices, but for whatever reason (proper marketing, best features, great price, etc.), they've chosen yours.

            Regardless of what your product/service does, you would not be making money without someone agreeing to pay you. Without the customer, you have nothing. You owe them a thank you.

            I think using congratulations really varies on what the product/service and what your angle is. If you were selling a book on how to quit smoking, you might say something like "Congratulations for taking back control of your life." But with that example, that's not even directly a congratulation for buying the product, rather the effect of the product.

    Being cocky/arrogant doesn't inspire trust in most cases but neither does weakness/desperation.

    On the one hand you probably just said on the sales letter something about info that will blow their mind or change their lives forever so you don't want to sound so grateful that you can now buy your supper with the $7 you just earned. On the other it is common courtesy to say thank you. Every 5 year old knows that.

    Something in the middle may work. Something like "Thank you for your purchase. You won' regret it" or "Thank you for trusting us - I promise that the next few hours/days (as they go through the course) will open your eyes in a way they've never been opened!".

    In my opinion, a doctor (or anyone else) unwilling to say thank you is exactly the type of person I like to avoid.

    If I had the opportunity, I would go above and beyond saying "thank you" and personally shake the hand of every person that buys one of my products. Advising people to stop saying thank you for business is terrible advice.

    There is a gas station down the street from my house that I stopped going to. Why did I stop? Because the owners hand me my change and go back to what they were doing. They don't say thank you... and they don't have my business anymore.

      I wouldn't be able to tell you what they say to me. I would need Google translate to tell. Only about 1 in 10 seem to speak English.

      If you see a sign here that resembles a franchise, but the name is different. They don't speak English in that one.

      But, when we are talking about "thank you" to customers. To me that is just common sense.

      What your talking about in the OP though has it's places, just not here.

      There are times when the, "Your lucky to get this" conceited way of marketing works. I just don't see it in info products, wordpress plugins, etc...

      You don't send an email out to your list saying, "Man you're so lucky to be on my list. You are so lucky I am nice enough to give you a chance to pay me $97!!! This isn't an honor I bestow on just anyone!"

    This make the members more grateful when you thanking him/her.

    Why not saying " thank you for investing your money and you time in my product" in case they bought your product, this make the buyer more positive to apply what is in your product and open a solid relation will help you in the future and increase the rate that this person could buy another product and products from you.

    I think it's absolutely normal to be thankful to people buying your products no matter how great they are and how cheaply you sell them - they help us to do our business and hence we can be nothing but thankful to them, and that's what most sellers feel I believe (at least I do). For some it's also a matter of manners, but to me this is secondary.

    they don't care how hard you create your product, they don't care how long & cost takes to complete the product.

    price is relative for everyone,
    Even for $5 , maybe they cannot afford for it for some unlucky people
    its all about seller attitude

    we sell our product on internet, the buyer could be anyone in this planet with different culture.

    for me, I prefer to say "thank you ...." it is common attitude to express our appreciation to buyer with different culture on internet..

    What do all checkout guys at shops (or organizations) ... big or small ... say after you purchase something from them.

    You don't hear them go on an ego trip and say, "Congrats for buying a super awesome product from a super awesome product creator.....'.

    A warm smile and a down to earth thank you is often a better antidote to ivory tower marketing attitudes.

      But might I offer a bit of a different view on the "Congratulations" point of view?

      There is such a thing as buyer's remorse, and in certain situations, I think that a congratulations message can be entirely appropriate.

      "Congratulations on taking the first step towards [getting out of debt/losing weight/your new career/learning how to juggle/etc.]"

      It can be a good thing if done correctly. It's not a "congrats on buying my stuff!" but congrats of a different type.

      Actually, YES! In fact, Harvard even thanks you for merely CONSIDERING them as an option. Let me quote:

      There are, it seems to me, fundamental differences in our thinking. For example:

      1. You mention Harvard professors, Steve Jobs, and doctors as if they are above us all so they don't need to say thank you but that we should almost be honored to buy their product, take their class, or have them do a prostate exam on us. I disagree.

      They are people just like you and me and I guarantee that almost everyone of us does something better than them. Even the president says thank you.

      2. You seem to think that online products aren't real or a real business. Very much disagree. Just ask Amazon about the thousands of digital infoproducts they sell daily.

      Until those 2 issues get overcome, we'll just have to keep on disagreeing.

      If your product is exeptional, the buyer will thank you, but I wouldn't feel comfortable in accepting their thanks , if I had not thanked them for buying the products first.

      To put yourself on a par with Harvard University make no sense, you both know(the buyer and seller), that you are not on the the level of Harvard which, can confer degrees, endorsed by the government, Our relationship to our buyers is more akin to partners, they are our business partners and are so on the same level as us. Why wouldn't you thank your business partner?

    I think that it is just common courtesy to say thank you when a customer decides to invest their hard earned money on one of my products. When I am in the process doing research and producing a new product my goal is always to over-deliver so the value and quality of the product with the bonuses is far beyond the amount of money my customer will invest.

    I do congratulate my clients on their purchase decision but I also thank them in receipts and other correspondence.

    In fact the specific words of thanks that I use have had a tremendous positive impact on all forms of communication that I have with my clients. I am careful to use it often but not for every piece of communication.

    It is simple and highly effective. I am sure you can come up with your own.

    Saying thank you is just simple manners which is a minimum that should be expected.

    It sure beats some wise ass comment such as:

    "You are one lucky b'stard. I only had 47 digital copies left and you managed to get one. **** man, if you do what I say in the course you will make a fortune and you will do more than thank me. My only gripe with you now Mr Customer is why it took you so long to find me and buy one of my limited edition ebooks. Now if you don't make a bunch of cash don't go blaming me. Oh and by the way, there are no refunds".

I also think that anytime someone takes a risk and buys my product, I'd like to thank them for trusting me. Then I over-deliver.

    I agree with the idea that you can thank customers (basic manners) and congratulate them on their smart purchase. It is always good to immediately reinforce people's decision. Some people are a bit edgy about having spent money and they need that reinforcement. This also makes it easier to upsell or to promote other offers in the future - the thank you page is often underused. It should also highlight the fact that new offers are coming (that prevents spam requests) and could be used for immediate promotion of other related offers.

    I think saying thank you is a bit more proper than saying thank because i find congratulating the buyer as a bit boastful. however maybe, it would be nice to say thank you because you appreciate their desire to buy your product and at the same time congratulating them for making the right choice.

    The author, or seller 'thanks' the customer for doing him a favor by paying him and purchasing his product?

    It should be like - The customer is lucky to get the amazing product for such a price. If a customer pays $10 for an ebook, it should have more than $10 worth of value in it. If the seller really believes in his product, he wouldn't say thank you but the opposite...

    So it should be "Congrats on signing up for this course!" or something like that.

    What say?
