How to advertise yourself as a freelance writer?

Hi all,

Due to a family situation, I am currently out of housing for the time being. I also happen to be out of money XD. I am a very good writer and I was thinking I could take up freelance writing for some quick cash to make ends meet.

I was wondering if any of you could give me some pointers as to how to get clients. Note that I have almost no money to invest in advertising.

Also, what kind of rate would you suggest I charge? I was thinking I'd start out with $0.02 per word since I deliver very high quality content.

What are your suggestions?

Thanks,

Matt

I'm going to get around to doing a WSO about "How to Use Google" one of these days...I bet I could make a million bucks on it! LOL

        Here are a few tips:

        Code:
        site:warriorforum.com "article writing"
That will return any post in the entire Warrior Forum that contains the words "article writing."

        Code:
        site:warriorforum.com/main-internet-marketing-discussion-forum/ "article writing"
That will search in only this subforum for the term "article writing" and return those results.

On the left sidebar, click on the link that say something about more options and then limit it by say...the last month or two. After that, you can also arrange it by date instead of relevance.

That'll get you started in Google and make you slightly dangerous. Ask me for more advanced tips after you've mastered those.

Those threads should help you. I started out as a freelance writer and the main problem I had was finding long-term clients. Many clients wanted work done sporadically. I needed full-time. I had my own website that showed many samples of my writing. From that I gained many long-term clients that stayed with me for a very long time. It takes time but you can do it. Good luck and I hope your situation improves very soon.

You need some samples, and you need to prove yourself. There are a lot of people looking for writers, and a lot of writers. For a 500 word article, I have seen people charge between $2 and $20, so take a look at what people expect for each of those prices and see where you fit in.

Once you have had a couple of orders, and done right by them, it won't be hard for business to pick up. Some people care about price, others care about quality and return on investment. If you make people money, they'll continue to hire you. (At least in my experience.)

I'd begin by advertizing your service on Fiverr.com, but .02 a word won't attract you much business. On Fiverr, you'll need to produce a high quality 500 word article for 5 bucks. However, in view of the latest Google Panda and Penguin updates, 500 word articles do seem to carry the day like they use to. The latest word is that bloggers will need to step it up now, and begin producing longer articles, between 750-1000 words each.

So, since a thousand word article will gross you 10 bucks, you'll need to be quite the natural born writer to make a living at that, unless you're in a country where the cost of living is only a fraction of that in the G8 countries. You better decide in a real hurry where your real strengths reside, as a writer, if you haven't done so already, and focus entirely on those, if you're going to set a goal of writing 10-20 high-quality thousand word articles a day!

You can eventually outsource some of this work, and take on the role of an editor instead; and focus on expanding and polishing up the articles you've outsourced. Once you're an established writer, and your rep precedes you, you can quit Fiverr and only syndicate your service to the top 100 blogs online. They are making huge dollars and will gladly pay your price for the best article writing that money can buy, in order to secure their top ranking(s) in the SERP's.

Your goal should be to eventually focus primarily on writing and marketing e-books on Amazon.com. There are a lot of authors currently raking in between 20-30k a month just selling e-books, mainly on Amazon.com! That is easily attainable by any smart marketer who is also a natural born writer!

Here's wishing you huge success as an author!

This was an interesting read, except your articles need to be a minimum 1000 words. They also need to be NOT SPUN, 100% Original, and extremely high quality.

Why not start a thread in the Warriors For Hire section, or go to sites like Freelancer.com and post there.

You can start in the "basement" (Fiverr, iWriter, etc..) and write for sites where you'll get paid pebbles, to gain experience, but it's difficult to go from a discount provider to a premium provider. If you have the chops, start at the top and provide great value. I suggest setting up a website where you can showcase your work, post testimonials and take orders. Good luck!

I have to say Matthieu that I am pleasantly surprised by your article. I've gotten a little jaded reading all of the stuff from others who claim to be good writers and couldn't write their way out of a paper bag. Your article was written very well.

I do want to say that it was really bad advice for someone look to make money online, but it was written well, I didn't catch any typos, it flowed smoothly, and I liked the style. I think you might have a shot at this game after all!
