Help with getting to first page

Hi,

I am new to this forum and to seo as well.

I am a local piano teacher in San Antonio, Texas. My website was on page 5 for a long time (using search terms like san antonio piano lessons, san antonio piano teachers). Now, I am high on page 2 and sometimes on page 1. I increased my rank by doing the following-

1. taking the flash out of my website. My previous site looked better but it wasn't getting me customers.
2. Getting a google places ad. Getting 5 reviews on it.
3. Putting up three student testimonials on youtube and titling the videos "san antonio piano teachers."
4. Putting my site on a few other piano listings.
5. I have a five hour video course on youtube. The description on all of these videos (I have 50 videos in the course) links to my site.

So, I am wondering what to do next? Start a blog? comment on other sites? be patient?

Thanks.

    Hi @kspriggs,

There are a lot of things to do and I'm pretty sure you'll get a fair amount of them outlined in this thread for you. My contribution for now is about adding targeted content to your site and the possibility of using paid search (adwords/facebook):

    - First, if you or someone has done a comprehensive keyword analysis of your niche and site, you should have a minimum of around 150 keywords that are relevant to your site. My advice would be to add a blog to your site and write 800+ word posts/articles targeting those specific keywords using on page SEO (title,H2 tags, KW density, alt tags, etc).

Additionally mixing in multiple kws within each post (one main, and a couple of secondary) is helpful. So even if the search volume is only 50 people per month for some of the keywords, you are throwing a wide net and capturing as much organic traffic as possible BECAUSE the majority of these keywords will be very low competition SEO-wise and your posts will quite possibly rank on their own with NO SEO done to them.

You could also add a plugin or service to automatically bookmark (social bookmarks) these posts every time you do them, so there would be minimal SEO. Finally, I would add a social share widget/plugin so that traffic/people could tweet/share/pin your posts - thus adding to the traffic to your site. Hope that makes sense, it's only a summary.

    - Second, I'm not going to go into a lot of detail here, but a properly set up adwords and/or facebook PPC campaign can drive very targeted traffic to your site. If your site is set up to capture these leads (email/phone, etc.), then even if they don't contact you, you can follow up with them and increase your conversions. This can be aided by using a landing page designed for lead capture (even for a small local business).

    Hope that helps.

    Aloha ~

5 hours is a lot of content to give away for free! I understand that you use it to get students, but you could look into turning it into a paid info product.

It's important to find out which keywords people in your area are using to find piano teachers. You may want to consider PPC as well as organic search for traffic. If you can pay .50 for a potential student to find your website, and the website is designed to showcase the information well, it could very well be worth the price of admission to consider paid traffic, too.

Once you have keywords in mind, you can write articles around those keywords. It's important to understand your customer, and as a teacher with experience I'm sure you - so write the articles in a way that speaks to them.

    Good luck!
