Hey WF, I'm in the process of creating my 1st ecommerce website. Anyone have any suggestions on shopping cart software, a good hosting company, and any type of advice you can pass on to a newbie.

Yes, 1shoppingcart is a great tool to use. It's very easy and provides virtually everything you need to run smoothly. You can actually try it for a month for $3.95.

1shoppingcart is generally good but I have heard that their email support is lacking and the integrated autoresponder does not work well. You may wish to take a look at the following shopping cart softwares before making a decision:

    1. Shopify.com
    2. Volusion.com
    3. PinnacleCart.com
    4. BigCommerce.com
    5. ShopSite.com

I've been using opencart (opencart.com) which is a open source shopping cart software. I find it one of the easier free shopping cart software to use. You can use the standard template that is included or go to themeforest.net or search for others free or pay. Support is community based.

If you are happy using wordpress then you can take a look at woo themes which have a free theme using their commerce plugin

You can try prestashop. It is free and you can get your store set up relatively quickly. Downside is you can end up spending a lot buying the premium modules to customize and add certain store functions. I've been able to get by with all free modules on most of my stores though.

What type of volume are you expecting? What payment gateway do you want to use?

For most small sites woocommerce or eshop for wordpress are much more flexible and work just fine.
Just dont cheap out on hosting.

I would start out with a decent shared account, hostgator has been fine for me for small shops. You get more ram and cpu with that than a small vps. Once you outgrow that, you should have the cash for a decent sized vps/small dedi, and provided you purchase cpanel with it, migration will we simple.

I use cart2mobile. It is easy to install in mobile phones. I have not found no difficulties yet. If you are interested you can also try this. However, I would always recommend to get free demo of at least some shopping cart software before you install one. You can visit the website of cart2mobile if you want to know more about it.

Shopping Cart Software is software used e-commerce to assist people making purchases online, analogous to the American English term chopping Cart. In British English it is generally known as a shopping basket, almost exclusively shortened on websites to 'basket'.
The software allows online shopping customers to accumulate a list of items for purchase, described metaphorically as “placing items in the shopping cart” or “adding to cart”. Upon checkout, the software typically calculates a total for the order, including shipping and handling (i.e. postage and packing) charges and the associated taxes, as applicable.

If you're just looking to cut your teeth on this first site and don't want to waste too much money or time, then Zen Cart is a good option. I use it for quite a few of my eCommerce sites and it does the trick. Has a great developer and user community for support, themes for different store fronts and supports various payment processors.
