Please give me software ideas?

Hi, I am a coder and need some inspiration for new desktop software to code.

Whats something tedious, or essential that you do everyday that you'd like made into a program?

Preferably suggestions on things mainly about SEO, or marketing? For example something related to making websites, content, backlinks, etc.

Thanks!

I would love to have an app or piece of desktop software that could store my keywords and check Google every 24 hours to see where they were. I'd want it to be 100% compliant with the Google Search API so as not to run into any trouble. I'd also like for it to be able to check the traffic from my server for each site without having to use Google Analytics.

I don't think this would be too challenging, but I'm not enough of a programmer to have figured out how to do it on my own yet.

It's not too complicated. You could definitely find someone to get this done for you. I'd say 1k - 3k to have a bang-up job done, less for something workable but not amazing.

WhooshTraffic.com does something similar. By bosses use it and like it ok, but it's pretty expensive, and not always accurate (I have heard).

        Good luck!

I'd think it would be great to have a piece of software that helps you manage your daily meals and nutrition. Maybe it could even be linked to a large recipe database that makes recommendations as to what to cook for dinner. This would work well for those wishing to better manage their diets to lose weight, or for those who have dietary restrictions. And we all know how HUGE the dieting and nutritional market is. That was just a wild idea that I'd thought about before and I wanted to pass it along. Best of luck in all that you do!

I thought of creating something like this about 2 years ago. From memory, yummly was a great source of recipes + nutritional detail but they don't provide an API - which turned me away from it. I emailed asking them about an API and they told me they weren't planning one.. Something like Yummly that does provide the API could be a good starting point

Edit: Should have checked first - API now available: http://developer.yummly.com/wiki

I have to agree with JaRyCu. Being able to keep track of your rankings without having to turn it into a major event would be a huge time saver.

I'd forgotten about this thread...kind of glad that the OP bumped it because, even though he's apparently not interested in taking any action with it, maybe someone else would be.

It wouldn't be hard to do. You setup dummy HTML page so no one could get into your site. Then you create a compliant PHP script using an XML database and the Google API. The script pulls a url/kw combo from the database, calls Google to look for the combo, and then stores the result back in the file. Once it is done, it displays the results in a nifty little window and/or emails them to your inbox. You can setup a CRON job in your cPanel to run the script every 24 hours.

I'm just not much of a programmer. If someone is interested in partnering with me on this, I could break it down even further and help you create the classes as long as you could write the code for it.

The biggest problem with an app of this type is "personalized search".

The results you would be getting would be skewed according to your previous search patterns.

No offense you said so yourself you're not a coder so you dont know how difficult that would be. Also, Im not a PHP coder so even if I wanted to take action, I couldnt, sorry.

No need to bold out that Im not taking action when you dont know the reasoning behind it.

As far as 'software ideas' go. Solve a problem man. Find something that people keep complaining about on the forum and create a solution with an application. You'll learn something, and maybe make some money.

People don't know what they want. Asking probably isn't as effective as research. IMHO. But, I'm no software tycoon. Good luck with whatever you pursue! :-)

Why don't you try searching freelance forums and see what types of things of people are requesting and see if you can find any commonalities or solid ideas there.
