If I wanted to register a domain name and did not anyone to know my name, would private registration work, or would someone still be able to figure out the owner?

You can use Domain privacy, Domain privacy is a service offered by most domain registrars.
Contact your domain registrar and ask for Domain privacy.

    Good luck!

NameCheap offers free WhoisGuard if you buy domain from them.
Your name and other personal details won't show up when someone check
      that domain name.

Good to know matt. I have been getting tired of Godaddy lately and thinking of changing registrars. I hadn't looked into namecheap too closely but that is a good feature to have for free.

Note it's possible people can still find your info out by looking at what nameservers you have your domain pointed at and reverse searching for other sites on them. For large popular nameservers it's doubtful though.

I know everyone always says use namecheap for the free whois privacy guard, but if you look it is only free for the first year then you have to pay for it. I think it's only like a couple of bucks, but still, it isn't FREE!

Opss..my bad. You're right on that one. They offer it free for the first year only.

But at least their whois guard price is way cheaper that GoDaddy.
