Would you do something that you love/passionate about or something that could make you money?

Hey warriors,

My friend and I were talking a few days ago and we were talking about IM. He has made money with adsense using google sites, and I haven't made any money at all. We both love gaming and computers together. So we were deciding on making a review game website for games. For the past whole year while I was on here back in 2011. I have joined this forum, but haven't been active lately until now. The reason why I was on here is so I could make money online only. But my friend has made me realize that I should do something that I love to do the most. Which is computers and games. I have accomplished somethings, but not huge accomplishments. I was able to join amazon associates, clickbank, 3 CPA networks, markethealth, and moreniche. But something just doesn't seem right. I love Interne Marketing, but I just don't think its for me because its something that isnt for me. However I am not giving up. I want to combine games and computers together to somehow make money online with, but I just don't seem how? I have come up with the idea of a game review website that can review games and help people with computers. But its really hard to monetize this type of website because you don't want to scare off gamers with product reviews or cpa offers. Therefore I came up with the idea of using gaming ads on the website. Basically to summon all things up, I want to somehow make money with games and computers, but I just do not know how. I love to game and build/fix computers ( I am certified ) but it just seems hard on how I can. This is who I am. I am a gamer and a geek in computers. But my only problem is how can I monetize this?

One question I want to ask you guys is this? Do you do Internet Marketing for money? Or do you do it because this is what you love to do?

Never do something just because you can make money at it. I don't care how broke you are, don't do it for that reason. Yes, you can force yourself to make money, but eventually you're not going to want to do it anymore and it can be pure hell to get back out of something once you've gotten it rolling.

I made the same mistake you've professed to in your post. When I first started in IM last year, I signed up for every affiliate I could find. (I have an entire Google spreadsheet covered in affiliate codes and passwords.) I never made a penny with most of them. I slowly got into other things that I enjoyed more and fit better with my personality, and then I started making money.

I love to write. I love to help people. I love to talk to people as well. For me, that makes article & content writing a natural fit because I get to combine all three and make money doing it. (It doesn't hurt that I'm really good at it as well!)

The last business I was in was owning my own retail cellular accessories shop in a mall. I loved it, too, because I always found ways to make my customers smile. I NEVER tried to sell them anything; instead, I just focused on trying to make their day a little better before they left, whether or not they purchased anything from me. The result: they always came back to me when they needed stuff for their phones.

So my point is, do something you're passionate about. The money will come with it once you get it going.

here's a little story about working in something you're passionate about:

About 5 years ago I created a free WordPress theme and template for The Lord of the Rings. I'm a huge fan of Tolkien's work, and at the time I was creating lots and lots of free templates to distribute and brand myself.

Well someone who found my free LOTR template, hired me to create a kinship site for the online MMO - LOTRO (The Lord of the Rings online). That client paid me a cool $700 for a kinship site that consisted of a custom WordPress theme, a custom forum, chat room, and photo gallery. I did not advertise to get that client, he found me, proving to me that when you are happy doing what you love, the money comes to you, almost magically. I still play LOTRO, by the way, thanks to that client, and I'm actually a founding member.

That is not the first time something like that has happened to me. Every time I honour myself, and focus on anything else besides the money, like helping people, doing what I love, etc., money comes to me almost effortlessly.

When your work is fun and you're passionate about what you do, it doesn't feel like work. You are happy, and your happiness attracts good things to you.

You may think this is all BS, but trust me, do what you love, and the money WILL come.

        Excellent post Karen!

My largest paying writing jobs and voice acting jobs came from people who approached me. I won't go into specifics but I will say that because of those clients, I started my writing and voice over businesses.

Yep, I didn't even have a business set up in those genres yet when I received those offers. But my passion lies both in acting and writing, and I guess it showed. Oh, and those clients are my most loyal clients of all, still today.

I am sure if you do something from your heart, something you really like people will feel it somehow when they read your blog or watch your work.

If you haven't got the perfect idea or clear vision about the monetization of your site yet my advice is to analyze those gaming sites which are good at in this. It will help you in brainstorming and ideas may start to pop in your mind.

      Don't give up!

Get with Stratics.com as far as marketing your game site. Tell them Lefty sent you. They should get a good kick out of it. I was pretty well known to Stratics, EA as well as Ultima Online.

Stratics gets about a 250,000 views a month.

I think it is so important to do what you love, especially if you want to be successfully self employed. It's what makes you get up in the morning and keeps you motivated. I was a bank manager before the economy collapsed and while it paid the bills it left me miserable. I had tried a number of different careers before that, including the manager of a vitamin shop and a few other things and it always left me unfulfilled. My degree in English was left unused because I couldn't find work in that field. I finally decided to take the leap and do something of my own and I've found quite a bit of success.

I've never been happier with work and I owe it all to doing what I love. I think if you do that and you work hard you will definitely find more success than doing something purely for the money.

    Good luck!

Most things can make you money, why not look for a mixture - something you love that can make money.

Also think about this - if you make something you love into your job, will you still love it in the future? Maybe it isnt worth the sacrifice.

Those can usually go hand in hand. Do what you love! It sucks doing something you don't enjoy. But know this: many times, turning something you love into a job becomes just that... A job.

      Do something you love!!

Because when your working on something you love it doesn't even seem like work, right?

As a result of that you put in more hours to the project. But not more 'normal' hours. The hours you put in will be so productive and so creative because it will be something you have a real genuine passion about.

      Hope that helps mate

If you like gaming and reviewing /Blogging about them,
      An Idea:
Just build your site and forget about Money when your doing it, that way you build a site that is for users Not for YOU to make money, there is a difference.

I spoke with a gamer sometime ago and this was what we came up with.

Mailing list of course, a NEWSLETTER with actual news in it for gamers.

Inside the newsletter you have your ads for Deals on products in the gaming niche Like awesome keyboards, New Game releases, accessories and special edition packs etc.

I mean search out the real hardcore gamer hardware and find good deals on it.

In Time you'll soon be able to approach gaming companies and hardware sellers and say "I have 10,000 raving gamers that would be interested in your product, can I get a special One off deal for them?" You'll get a lot of yes's I would say.

      Last Idea:
The newsletter list when big enough becomes your vehicle.
      Lets say 20,000 subscribers,
a solo to that list could easily be sold for $497 probably a lot more.

2 per week for a year and I'll let you do the math.

Dude there is money in every niche, there is no need to complicate it. Gamers want gaming stuff so do the research for them and offer the best deals you can find and pick up the commissions.

if you do it properly you will be able to make money every time you hit SEND from your autoresponder account.

Hope that helps man. Just trying to get you thinking a bit.

Well I think it can actually be a tad bit of both.

I have been in IM for 3 years and have tried a lot of things for a bit that I didn't really enjoy but that could theoretically make me money. I have also tried things in IM that I DID enjoy and could theoretically make me money.

NEITHER of them are/were things that I would choose to spend all my time doing if I didn't have to make money. In other words, my passion inherently is NOT IM and really couldn't be for anyone. IM is not a fundamental part of being a person. BUT, communicating, or sharing, or creating things, or mental/technical work as general parts of ourselves MAY be our passions and they can be integrated or super imposed into IM.

In other words, I love to work in IM and I am passionate about what I do here. My success has come partially because the things I enjoy inherently (sharing/communicating and creating) are able to be used and expressed in the IM medium. It doesn't really matter if it's in site building, email marketing, CPA, or whatever, it's the overall passionate integration of my inherent qualities into IM.

I guess another way to say it is that I 'do' IM with heart.

My point is that you don't have to choose something that's in line with what you like to do outside of IM. You just have to do IM with parts of you that are natural and that you enjoy. So I don't have to build sites or sell products related to triathlon or cooking or back packing or meditating - all things I love to do in life. I just have to do the IM things I choose to do with authentic parts of my self, not robotically.

You don't need to make money from a gaming site.

You just need to fit gaming into your website.

You could sell gaming posters, handsets, leather chairs for gamers, tickets to gaming conventions.

You get the point. Just think outside the box.

I don't think you will last very long in this business if you simply do not like it. Honestly, it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of long hours. I love this business and it doesn't even feel like work to me. I use to write articles for a living when I retired and even though I did very well with it I didn't really like it. Pick a niche such as something in gaming or computers that you are passionate about and try that to see if that helps you.

You know what type of sites that "real" visitors like to visit?

Real sites about topics that they are passionate about and a lot of people of passionate about games and computers. If you can put your passion into those sites, your far more likely to get good traffic and loyal readers. You can figure out the monetization once you achieve that.

Its definitely a good idea to work on something you are passionate about to make money, im just about to build 5 authority sites based on topics that i have a keen interest in. I have 16 niche sites that have been hit hard by the recent google updates and these are all on topics that i have virtually no interest in so i have no motivation to get them back up and earning again.

I think you should work on the things you are passionate about then find ways to make money, not the other way round.

I don't market on the internet for money.. Whenever I find myself in front of my computer with an internet connection, I feel I can reach the world and travel round it as well.

So I my own case, the pleasure first. Money is the secondary motive.

My believe: Do something you are passionate about and the money will follow.

This is generally my view. However, sometimes I had to sacrifice passion for money so that I could re-invest that money into my passions. In the long-run, it is my passions that I'd stay with and make me money as a result.

The best situation to be in is to find something that you love doing and are passionate about and that you can also make good money at. It is wonderful to be paid for doing what you already have a passion for. If you do not have a passion for and at least enjoy the work that you do, most likely you will not stick with it in the long run.
