Lets Talk Article Marketing

What has been your experience with article marketing? How many articles do you write for a particular site/blog? Do you submit to all article directory's that you can find or to a select few? how long did it take you to see results? If you submit to multiple directory's do you submit the same draft to each directory?

Search the old forum. There are SO MANY great threads on this subject, you won't be disappointed.

True tom however we I am sure have new people coming in here that have never been in the old forum so I thought this would be a good topic to cover

        Carl,
To be completely honest, article marketing has been the cornorstone for my entire business. Several years ago I started with 5 websites that covered the following niches:

        debt relief
        loans
        treadmills
        elliptical trainers
        long distance calls

I started submitting articles for each niche and noticed that traffic was arriving and making me money (primarily through adsense). I then started outsourcing my article writing so I could focus on building sites. At one point I had over 250 websites online and I was writing and submitting articles for each of them in order to get each site making at least $1.38 a day from adsense. Things were going great as many sites were just crushing my income goals but then I suffered a huge setback when I lost hundreds of sites due to a registerfly.com domian name register fiasco.

However, article marketing continues to be my main means of traffic generation and income production. I just recently submitted a new article that dealt with prostate cancer and that site in less then 48 hours is now a $5 a day site - naturally I am writing and submitting more articles on that niche.

Quite frankly, I owe my entire online business success to article marketing but realize that it has evolved tremendously over the years. When I first started 30 articles was good enough to get a site receiving traffic in 12 - 36 hours and making money easily within 48 hours. Now, you have to have 3 times the articles submitted and also employ other means of traffic generation with your articles such as Squidoo, Yahoo Answers, Facebook, Hubpages and many more traffic generation sites.

One caveat to that is, although it requires more work to obtain the benefits from article marketing I have found that if you put forth the effort and truly work an article marketing campaign successfully my ROI is much better then it was several years ago because you can generate more traffic and create more income.

        Thanks,
        Tim

          Thanks Tim

I have heard so much about article marketing and to tell the truth I am just now getting into that after having spent hundreds of dollars on other traffic generation methods with only moderate success. I will keep all posted as to how it goes. I do have one question myself re: article marketing though. There are (as near as I can tell) two schools of thought on if you should rewrite your article by at least 30% when submitting to multiple article directory's one school says you should and the other says you don't need to.

Now here is where I am perhaps missing the boat. If the reason for article marketing is to generate traffic (and it is) and part of that is by other people putting your articles on their blog, ezine and what have you. Then how do you keep from getting penalized by google for duplicate content? and in that case why would you need to rewrite your article for each directory you submit to?

You don't necessarily have to rewrite your article for those other places but what I have always advocated is that you have one version for your website, one version you submit to ezinearticles.com and a third version you then submit everywhere else.

Now, this is a the bare minimum I would recommend doing. If you truly want to achieve some good results from yoru article marketing campaign then I recommend you go ahead and spend some time spinning your article into about 15 - 20 different versions using one of the more advanced (meaning better and easier to use) article spinners on the market. I personally like Power Article Rewriter for this task.

I have heard nasty things about those "article spinners" as in then the article looks like trash and does not read properly. What has been your experience with article rewriter?

For the old article spinners that is probably true but this particular spinner works extremely well and the articles it creates are very good. However, as with any article spinner, you get what you put into it. I like this program because if you spend an hour really seeding the article it creates several versions that make sense and are unique enough to where you don't have to worry about duplicate content issues if they truly do exist.

So if I understand this correctly then only one of the Directory's will show in the Google search. well that's OK then as the traffic you get from the other directory's will still be good?

For me, article marketing helped me realize that building an Internet business is not about creating the "next big thing" with a massive launch and $millions invested...

It showed me that you can actually build real money makers from (literally) nothing. Seriously - if you've got the time and know-how to write some pretty simple articles on problems that lots of people have, you can easily attract plenty of customers to any site you want.

It also showed me that "articles" aren't just limited to EzineArticles... you can use Squidoo and Knol for some pretty neat CONTENT MARKETING, whereby you give out more than just a couple of hundred words

                        Hi Carl,

Timg has the right idea...article marketing does work, and once you become proficient at it, it works VERY well.

I have several sites that get over 300 targeted uniques per day solely from articles at directories.

It's all about having some consistency and having a plan to which you work. Go into a niche, have a set process for finding keywords, write x amount of articles, get the site online, submit the articles, then move on to the next site.

                        Rinse and repeat.

                        Hope that helps

Most of it comes from product sales but if I can't get the product to convert the way I'd like (or need) I just whip some adsense up there too and that brings in some moolah.

-- Adsense on its own is a terrible money maker because you've got to get thousands of visitors just to earn a couple of hundred $ a day... but if you've got a bunch of visitors who don't want to *buy* anything, it can prove to be quite a nice source of "backup income".

Rewriting older PLR articles works well too, though it will take a little more time.

The old article will really only serve as a framework, since it will have to be completely "reconstructed".

Just a personal opinion, but this method helps me to over come "Writer's Block", since it is easier to reorganize written thoughts than to create from scratch.

                                  Best!

I use SubmitYourArticle as well and it is doing more than I thought it would as far as traffic. They have a leveraging tool so you can change your articles up easily to be the 30% or more as suggessted.

We ran a little research submitting just one article compared to using the leveraging option. The leveraging option produced more back links that were indexed than submitting a lone article.

The traffic you get from article marketing depends on the PR of the article directory. Also you must get a hot product to sell it to a hungry market. Remember to use the most searched keyword in the title.

                                            Hi Carl,

Here are the views from a single article at EA. Yes, that's 47,842 views and 6,403 CT's.

                                            47,842 30 6,403 11 0 19

The same article at another top directory got about 1,000 views and that number goes down to the 100 view range at most any other directory if that.

                                            What's my point?

These stats tell me to primarily focus on EA when it comes to article marketing.

                                            Why?

                                            Simple math...

In the past I used to try and submit to every directory out there. I simply don't have the time to do that anymore and it's more profitable from my point of view to focus on the quality of the article including the article bio than to go for mass submission at this point.

                                            Is this the right way?

                                            You tell me...

I wasted so many hundreds of hours trying to submit articles one by one to other directories by hand when first getting started. If you plan on going for mass submission you would be very wise to consider SubmitYourArticle.com or outsource.

                                            Cheers,

The date on the article mentioned is 02/21/2007

Many other articles are above average if I take the time to research keywords.

I primarily focused on the quality of content (how to education style) and the long tail keyword in the example article and that's what works for me these days...

That article is well above average. The typical article gets about 3,000 to 6,000 views within that period of time [without using focused 'long tail keywords' I've searched for and researched] which takes time to do it the right way.

Some really tight focused niches it can be really tough just to get 500 views...

                                                Cheers.

I know one of you guys will know the answer to this.

Is there a way at Ezine Articles to see the most popular articles of all that are there? I'm not talking about the most popular of each category.

I'm trying to save myself some time. Would like to scan a list of overall most popular if it's possible. After all of my searching there methinks not but just thought I would throw it by you guys.

                                                  Thanks

My Ezines is a basic membership and I'm waiting to get the last article approved. I'm an excellent writer and all my work is original, unique and interesting

So, my question is, if I have 15 articles ready to submit once they approve my account upgrade, will they flag my account as spam if I submit them all at once? I could write them all today and have them ready for tomorrow if this is the case and they won't penalize me for it.
I don't think they will regard as spam.

I have submitted over 20 articles in one day and they get approved as normal. =)

                                                    Matt,
Up until about a month or so ago you could see the most popular articles for each author if you checked their extended bio - All of the articles they had previously submitted were listed along with the number of page views. However, EZA decided that it would be better if those stats were removed and they did so at the request of their members because it was information that revealed to much to competitors that spyed on specific authors.

After the information was removed it could still be found by checking the cached page in Google for each author's extended bio. However, because Google crawls and updates EZA so often that information was wiped away.

So at the moment if you want to truly find the most popular articles you need to search by hand and let me tell you it is a bit time consuming because I do that form of "Article Mining" and I have found that it's not the most enjoyable of taskings.

I know that the niche I've chosen to start in, I'd be giving away everything that there is to know, by the time I've written 50 articles or so...maybe I should rethink my niche.

                                              Cheers,

                                              Dean,
I agree with you on that point - My most popular article that covers the acne niche was submitted on Tuesday, July 5th 2005. It has received 77,353 page views but only has 1444 recorded url clicks. I say recorded because EZA didn;t track that information when the article was first submitted.

By comparison the article that has sent the most traffic to my site only has 28,864 page views but sent a whopping 8,365 visitors to my website.

The difference in performance between the two articles mentioned above lies in the niche, the article title and the resource box but both have displayed tremendous results thanks in large part to EZA.

                                                    Hi Carl,

No, no adsense for me, I find you make a ton more money from affiliate links. Directing the prospect from EZA to a well written presale page and then having affiliate links can work wonders.

You can do pretty well with standard review pages commenting on 3 products and giving them a mark out of ten or five or whatever. This is a very handy way of putting up a lot of sites very quickly, because you can usually use the same templates etc.

                                                    Hope that helps Carl...

I have a few like that too. My best performer was published at EZA in October 2005, and it's currently sitting at 116,692 views. It averages over 1000 views per month still today

It's only had 1247 clicks since they started tracking it though, but I updated the bio a few days ago to something that will dramatically increase that stat.

Article marketing is one of the driving forces behind my business. I submit 20-30 articles per day to promote two different niches.

The niche can play a huge role in how much traffic you get. The weight loss niche for example, easily gets 5 to 7 times more traffic than the Internet marketing niche. If you submit 1,000 articles on the weight loss niche alone, you will reach 1,000,000 page views in less than 12 months. Personally, I now submit 10 weight loss articles per day so it's on track to reach 3,650 articles on weight loss alone in a year. That's potentially 3,650,000 page views very fast, which equates to a lot of traffic.

And the other 'secret sauce' I add to my article marketing is that I build a list to go with it. I don't go for the quick Adsense click or the affiliate commission. I build a list, and then I can monetize it anyway I want. It's a traffic recycler. So if you get 200 visitors per day from article marketing and 1,000+ clicks from an email promotion every week, that's an extra 4,000+ hits on your offer every month, which will equate to a lot more sales. Even if you're getting a 1% conversation rate on those hits, you will still be getting 40 extra sales every month.

If you have a $27 product, that's more than an extra 1k every month. Certainly makes an Aweber monthly fee look like peanuts.

For the article submission process, I concentrate mainly on Ezine Articles. I track my traffic, and that's where more than 90% of your article marketing traffic will come from, as far as article directories are concerned. But I will say this - it is worth the time to submit to other article directories.

Duplicate content on other sites won't penalize your own site. So if you submit the exact same article to more than one directory, all it means is that Google will just pick up one of them for showing in the SERPs, and the rest (if indexed at all) will be relegated to the supplemental results. There are exceptions to this... I have an article I wrote at the end of 2005 that shows up 3 times on the first page of Google results for a fairly popular keyword phrase (not longtail). Each instance is the same article housed at 3 different directories. Not sure how that happened, but I'll take it!

Here's what I do as Standard Operating Procedure...

The original article goes into the review queue at EzineArticles. Once it's approved there (usually 2-3 days if you're a Platinum Level author), I'll change it up a bit (maybe 40% uniqueness vs. the original). I just quickly rewrite it by hand and check it at dupecop against the original. Then I'll take this altered version and submit it to about 10 more of the better directories. At least one instance of that version will get picked up by Google, as well as the original at EZA.

If it's a topic I think my site visitors will really get something useful out of, I'll take the topic and write an entirely different article and post it to my site. But that's not very often. My site isn't going to outrank EZA anytime soon, so it's ok by me if people read my writing on an EZA page. As long as I get a decent CTR to my squeeze page from the article, it's all good!

Good ideas! I agree that duplicate content won't hurt you if you use the same article for your site as for the article directories.. even if Ezine's version gets picked up instead of your own sites version, Ezine's still has the link back to your site in the author's box. So you still have a high potential to get that visitor to your site, if they like the article. That is why it is important to make sure they are quality articles! HTH.
