What's so bad about Godaddy?

Hey guys, I'm sure I'll get a lot of passionate responses here, but I was wondering why everyone is so against hosting with Godaddy. Perhaps I just haven't been there long enough, but I haven't had an issue and the support there is fantastic.

I just had an issue with my website (not their fault) and was able to pick up the phone and talk to a real person instantly at about 12:30 am. Not only did she walk me through the issue and what I need to do, but she sent me several e-mails with instructions.

What exactly is the problem most people are having with them? I wouldn't mind moving to Blue Host or something, but I just haven't really had an issue yet. Interested to hear your stories.

You try running a decent script on there and you'll see what we mean, (because you cant).

For instance we dont advise folks using godaddy to install EasyMemberPro, its virtually impossible.

And unless its changes since I saw it last, they dont use cpanel either (Why would any host not use cpanel)!!!

I opened this thread and was about to say: "What's your problem with GoDaddy?!" but then I saw that like me, you don't have a problem with them either.

Here's a few based off of past & current experiences:

    Overloaded servers
    Unsecured environments
    Poor SQL performance
    HORRIBLE control panel
    Ridiculous fee's
    Delayed emails

    The list goes on.......

Their first answer to a problem site, especially one that is Wordpress is "The installation is out of date." It doesn't matter what the problem is.

GoDaddy is a registrar that does hosting on the side, and nothing more. As a company owner myself, I don't like to talk down about another company but being in this industry going on 10 years now, I haven't seen and positive changes at GoDaddy.

In most cases, a lot of customers are novice users and don't really know any better or that there are better service providers out there.

GoDaddy, DreamHost, JustHost, 1&1 etc have a lot of money to throw towards affiliate accounts & advertising. With most of these insanely large companies, you're just another account.

I have to be honest that I haven't used them that much, so I have no idea if you can run scripts on them or stuff like that; but the thing I HATE most about them is their stupid ads and the very difficult process of buying a domain.

The other factor was there open support of SOPA, all up until people called them out on that and started moving to namecheap (including wikipedia and some other big sites)..Then they back tracked again, so really they don't have much a backbone to stand by what they believe in.

I am pretty happy with hostgator for my shared hosting.

When it comes to domains I love working with namecheap. They have a nice quick interface unilke GoDaddy who are constantly bombing me with buy more stuff sections.

Yeah Luke the constant upsales were very annoying... I haven't hosted a site with them in over 10 years but had domain registrations with them up till last year. I moved all of my domain registrations to namecheap.

Their hosting is crap. It has so many limitations and it is the only hosting my customers ever have problem with running simple scripts on.

    Jump overboard while you can.

From my own experience they are a horrible host. If you wan to get serious about this business then you need to use a serious web host. GoDaddy is nothing more than a company aimed at getting people to buy their first domain and setup a family photo album and the like. They are not a viable solution for real businesses.

My sentiments exactly. Not to mention that with them you are guilty until proven innocent if anyone complains that you're spamming even when you can prove that you're not.

In all the years I've been networking with other marketers, none of the truly successful ones (7 figures per annum and up) that I've met has ever used them for a hosting solution. Why drive a horse buggy when you can drive a luxury car for a similar or slightly higher price?

They restrict the number of emails you send per day.... i mean what? even if they are subscribers to your mailing list, I use to have some with them, and that's on Shared Dedicated Servers, they use PLESK for virtualization, they should use VMWare or other Linux Hyper-visor.

You get what you pay for, people on here complain about godaddy after getting their hosting plan for under $20 a month because its not fast enough or it doesn't do this or doesn't do that? What do you expect for under $20 a month hosting? I have used Godaddy for hosting for the past 5 years now and only had one problem, but I understand what I'm paying for. Maybe I don't see the same issues like others do because I don't use the bloated code you call Wordpress.

Of course you cant do everything on Godaddy hosting, but once I have a need to do more things like using memcache, nosql, minifying etc then I will move to a hosting environment that allows me to do that and pay more.

Worst company ever. They once claimed I sent spam emails (which they didn't prove) and charged my $1,250 to 'clean it up' for six domains. I sent a 'newsletter' to 100 people through a PHP script and one of the addresses was GoDaddy. It was only sent from one domain and they charged me $250 for six domains in my account.

    Scum bags.

Will, I had no choice. I attempted a chargeback with American Express and you can guess who won? The guys with the iron-clad TOS!

        Lesson learned.

That's also why I always warn people about 'cheap domain registrars' and trademarked domains. They all will sell them to you. Then if they get a Cease and Desist from the Trademark holder, they will charge you a 'clean up fee.' It's $197 from NameCheap last time I checked.

That's one way these companies subsidize their 'cheap offerings.'

Wow! A lot of negative replies here. Godaddy has come a long way in the last few years. They have updated their servers, run under 4G now. I never had an issue using their control panels, quite easy to run any application. Never had an issue with a script so far. As far as email, no issues yet.

They have a great support system and have answered and help resolve the few issues I have had with them in the past.

I smoke weed (use to) and they don't and say it is wrong so I stopped buying domains from them. Moved to enom and support guy says he like beef .

On a serious note. I have over 200 domains with them and a few of the free hosting I use for basic WP sites and seem to work ok. A pain to install but if you use backup buddy it is easy. I won't trust my main business sites on there shared server.

I will say this about Godaddy, they are always changing their interface which gets frustrating trying to find things like the link to the control panel for your site. But again its cheap shared hosting, not meant to run heavy web apps. Though one of my site that averages almost 2k unique visitors a day runs just fine on Godaddy.

Godaddy's interface changes a lot indeed... and yeah the aggressive sales tactics get in the way sometimes, but I know lots of companies like that. I've used Godaddy for my WordPress blog for years, then got a Dutch hosting provider and let me tell you: if you think Godaddy emails suck, then guess again. 5 minutes time needed to send one email. Sometimes you can't even access your inbox, etc. In short: I've seen worse. I'm sticking with Godaddy because it's what I know. That sounds stupid perhaps, but let me just say that I've come to learn that if a company performs kind of well, it beats going to a company you know NOTHING about... and suffering because of it. I prefer mediocrity over the unknown any day.

Over time organizations take on the traits of those that lead them. Take a good look at Parsons and then imagine what the internal workings and corporate culture of GoDaddy must be like. Do you really want to bet your business on it?

goDaddy has shocking customer service, GoDaddy is over priced, go daddy steals your domains in their contract with hosting whenever they want, go daddy lies to all of society that they are an "ETHICAL" company. godaddy is not actually 'godaddy", they are a domain sniffer, the moment you get real traffic to your domain, they find a way to steal it.

remember this lesson, I sure as hell did. luckily i now host with official webmaster hosting, hostmonster and justhost, easy money, lol.

ACTUALLY, ON AN OTHER POINT, NOW THAT I REMEMBER.

"JUSTHOST" also screwed me over BIG TIME, they banned an account with one of my creatives and it did not cost me one cent less than $20,000aud per year in losses for two years.

they then sold the domain to their stealth wars sniper, who then tried to sell it back to me for $165.

THEY REALIZED I HAD TRAFFIC ON THAT SITE AND IT WAS WORTH MONEY.

THEY REFUSED TO RESPOND TO MY EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS, INSTEAD, QUOTING THEIR TOS WHICH I WAS NOT IN VIOLATION OF.

"THEY REFER MY JUSTHOST CONTROL PANEL TO "PIPEDNS", BUT BANNED ME FROM MAKING CHANGES OR MANAGING MY DOMAIN, IT WAS THEN PURCHASED BY THEIR UNDERCOVER "SNIPER-NON-CONNECTED" STAFF AND ATTEMPTED TO BE SOLD BACK TO ME. I DECLINED ON GROUNDS I HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PURSUE OTHER DOMAIN CREATIVES INSTEAD OF WASTE TIME FIGHTING THAT BATTLE AS I MAKE MORE MONEY WHILE I DO PRODUCTIVE THINGS - HEHE".

Since they know (JUSTHOST) I am not willing to fly over for one domains loss, they think they are safe, they are not lol.

but they are safe for now only unless i decide i cbf pursuing it further.

also, hostmonster has a 150k file limitation on their unlimited hosting account.

after you reach their 150k file limit, your account is auto suspended until you realize your sites are not working and then because they lock you out of your account (and possible emails), you are forced to phone their customer service number or email their ticketing system that takes way too long (2 weeks) to help you out.

"QUOTE ME: THE RETARDS (HOSTMONSTER) SUSPEND YOUR ACCOUNT BUT DO NOT ALLOW YOUR FTP ACCOUNTS TO OPERATE EVEN THOUGH THEY EMAIL YOU AND TELL YOU YOU ARE ABOVE THE "FILE COUNT SUSPENSION LIMIT" - THEY DO THIS ON PURPOSE SO YOU CAN NOT LOWER THE FILES SO THEY HAVE TO HOST YOUR DOMAINS FOR LESS TIME AND THEREFORE MAKE MORE MONEY SAVING ON THEIR BOTTOM LINE HOSTING EXPENSES".

"IT SERVES THEIR PURPOSE THAT YOUR SITES ARE DOWN FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE SO THEY SAVE MONEY ON HOSTING THEM ".

SO NEVER GET ABOVE THE 100K LIMIT AND YOU ARE SWEET WITH HM.

so I do highly reccomend doing your research on where and why you need hosting for.

IF IT IS A DOMAIN THAT IS LESS THAN 100K UNIQUE IP'S PER WEEK, THEN HOST IN ON YOUR OWN CRAPPY "$500" SERVER AND 1.5MBPS INTERNET" FROM YOUR OWN HOME.

ENTIRE SETUP COSTS AROUND $1,000 (+ NORMAL INTERNET ACCESS FEES).

you do not need to worry about security because the extra $500 is for a permanent backup system.

back-up every seven days, this way if you ever get hacked, you have several back-ups at seven day intervals, incase they infiltrated your back ups, you definately want several "month by month" back ups aswell and you are sweet.

EASY MONEY, ZERO FILE LIMITATION, WORKS, I CONFIRM IT.

If this helped you, please thank me, cheers.

Yeah but dont you have to pay for a business connection with your ISP provider in order to host your own sites? I did this once, but the connection cost was to much compared to just paying a hosting company. It was fun though, I had a closest that was for a water heater but it was taken out. The door had a vent on it, so I had the cable company come out and drop a line to that closet and ran a server with a bunch of fans in it for several months before moving.

A few years ago, GoDaddy started a rape and pillage campaign against domain owners, particularly those who hosted with them, and held their domains hostage demanding a ransom of $800 ~, for what appeared to be some rather dubious claims of wrongdoing by the domain owners. Warriors quickly abandoned GoDaddy in a mass exodus, most moving to Namecheap. Most experienced Warriors, at that time, didn't host with GoDaddy, prefering hosts that used cPanel.

I am beginning to think that there may be a little bit of hostility toward Godaddy (understatement). I am presently using godaddy, and have had little trouble but I can see me going to namecheap in the very near future. I Don't agree with their support of sopa, and even though they seemingly retracted (not because they changed their view on the subject, (I am sure they didn't), but because they lost revenue). I definitely do not agree with the big game hunting either, unless of course the playing field were leveled in that these animals could shoot back with high-powered rifles of their own.

I used to use them for hosting on a vps but the smtp relays (which my website relies on) were failing.... I imagine if I used a dedicated server this would not have been an issue.

I found their support pretty good.... what you'd expect from a main stream host.

But Godaddy has a great interface for all products and their domain service is the best I have ever come across!

Shared hosting is okay (it's gotten better past year or so). The 4GH platform is actually pretty decent (cloud-based, or 'grid' (somewhat different technologies) ) : Seems to work well. This, of course, is more recent.

There will be outliers, of course, but for the most part, support is good. If you don't get answers you want; well then, call back. You might get somebody different that can help you better. This is just life ya know? I've had to do this with other companies, not just GD.

No, they won't "steal" your domain just because you start to get traffic. Who has this personally happened to (not word-of-mouth stories) and what REALLY happened? There's GOTTA be something we're not hearing heh

Control panel can be confusing... but, so can cPanel or Plesk or w/e the first time you use it... that's part of growing in computer systems; I can't count this as a negative, so much as a personal preference.

Script support: There is very little that I have NOT been able to get running. WordPress seems to work great on 4GH (which IS their 'wordpress hosting' platform).

Their "account management" interface has undergone a MAJOR overhaul recently (My Account screen) and I like it. It is actually TONS faster and easier to find your stuffs.

I own ~20 domains through them directly, and ~40+ domains 'through them' (but registered in my own reseller account). I've just really not had any problems. I host + register + email (free accounts) with them, and have clients who do them same without difficulty.

Nah. Nonsense. Been doing it for close to a decade. I've owned small sites and very large sites and never once had a problem.

          Put your computer to sleep.

          Go and touch wood, immediately.

Plenty of people out there have never had car accidents when speeding, it doesn't mean I would advocate speeding because the risk is still there. In this day and age there's no need to have both things hosted by the same company. It's just as easy to separate them. Even on the off chance I wanted to have both my hosting AND domains with the one company, GoDaddy are probably one of the LAST companies I would place my trust in. If one goes down then it means everything goes down. Not a great outcome. "It hasn't happened.. YET" is not a great argument for.

          But, each to their own.

Will, it's been a decade. I'm pretty comfortable with that. Nor am I "making an argument for it". I'm simply stating my experience. On the contrary, I've yet to see someone give a good reason WHY it's a bad idea.

Separating hosting and registration does nothing to protect you against one or the other going down. If you hosting goes down, it goes down, regardless of where your site is hosted.

As for trust, like I said, they've never given me a reason to not trust them. But as you said, "to each their own".

Just an FYI in case you're not aware.

Some hosting providers register their clients' domains under their name instead
of their clients'. So if the customer wishes to move their domain away from the
hosting provider, the latter has some leverage against the former.

There are also "documented" cases of hosting providers disappearing, leaving
their customers high and dry with little to no way to access their domains. It's
fortunate there are options, though it's probably after much stress.

If the customers' domains are registered to the defunct host, though, then it's
most likely a lost cause. The host's registrar partner is hesitant to help in that
kind of scenario, and it would take a lawsuit to resolve that.

Of course, that could also happen with a domain registrar. But I've yet to find
any domain registrar putting their customer's domain under their own instead of
their customer, more so those catering to end users like you and me.

OTOH, it seems like you've been carefully researching who you're looking to do
business with. Sounds like you made some good choices as well for you to post
              here your kind of experience.

This is something I'm actually going to blog about soon. Just thought I'd share.

Now, back to the discussion of what's so bad about Go Daddy. My answer: it
depends on what one wants or what one is looking for.

At the end of the day, it practically boils down to knowing what you're getting
              into.

I have used GoDaddy for over 7 years, they just keep getting better. In the beginning the customer service sucked, now it is really good. It is easy to install most of the popular platforms on my hosting(Joomla, Wordpress, zencart, osCommerce, Simple Machine Forum, etc.) I steer most of my technically challenged web design clients to them through reseller program. Again, for the technically challenged GoDaddy's customer service and tech support is second to none.

All hosting companies have positives and negatives. I was just read a thread here on the WF about how HostGator is cheating their resellers out of commissions. Yet, many of the people who have been cheated by them out of money continue to sing the praises of HostGator for their hosting. Go figure.

As for their politics, I don't care for them, just as I don't care for the politics of some of the energy companies, but I still fill my tank with gas. You just have to pick your battles and do what is right for you and your conscientious.

Slow, slow web page loading if you get the unlimited deal and of course as with any big company, if you don't like the service well that is just too bad. Servers are way overloaded which just won't work for PPV marketing.

I have not heard too many good things about the hosting at GoDaddy.

I've heard that it is terrible if you want to run a membership site, and that if you have a lot of videos then your site will be extremely slow to load.

I don't have any first hand experience with GoDaddy hosting though as I use HostGator

Amen to Namecheap. They also don't need corny tv ads or Nascar drivers to try and sell their services. If GoDaddy concentrated on the actual technical side of their business as much as they did promoting it, they might have a winning formula... but sadly they don't.

Some recommends hosting your domain to HostGator and register the domains to GoDaddy. Just like what wolfmmiii said, I don't see the significance of doing that nor the benefits of doing so.

I am planning to transfer my hosting from GoDaddy to HostGator before my hosting registration ends with GoDaddy.

I only buy domain names from Godaddy because they are the cheapest around. The other website that offers cheap domain name is Namecheap but I have never used their service before. I never use hosting from Godaddy as I have heard much about their hosting problems and limitations as posted by Warriors here. I host all my domains at Hostgator and has been satisfied with their service and support.

Do you really need a list?

    1. They have a billion upsells
    2. The owner likes to kill elephants.
    3. Have you seen their commercials...?
    4. They supported SOPA

I can keep going on but I'm lazy. I think this gives you an idea though.

GoDaddy doesn't use cPanel and it is really horrible to be there. However, I still have my GoDaddy account active for booking domains. I refunded the hosting plan! Those who are used to cPanel or those Newbies will find this a trouble.

I started out buying domains with godaddy thanks to all their $1 coupon offers

But in time shifted most of my domains over to namecheap

And have zero regrets doing so I like namecheap

The problems i have with godaddy is the UPSELLS, when you want to renew or buy a domain there are just too many upsells.

If you ask me , my advice is not to go for godaddy.

The only thing I can say is that I had started to go with them but changed my mind (did not finish filling out the form online by not hitting the final ACCEPT button). Two months later, they charged me for domains that I did not want. I was VERY much surprised! I told them about it and they refunded the money - the guy who did it was pretty nasty tho.

Also, I decided not to go with them because they seem to have taken the route to use sex for sales -the name "Go Daddy" alone made me feel it wasn't worth it - especially when I saw videos of the owner who seemed like a cheesy Las Vegas salesman.

I chose Hostgator - so far, so good. Excellent support - people friendly and they have videos to show you how to do things. You can get them at about any time. Once I had hired a web developer who I was in the middle of sacking. So - I had to change all IDs and passwords in wordpress and MySQL.

I did not know how to do this and found it on google but the guy at hostgator changed the passwords for me as well as gave me hints on how to do redirections in the index.html file.

I can only say that I so wished I found these guys earlier.

GoDaddy's hosting is tremendously unreliable. They simply oversell there shared and VPS servers and users have widely reported slow loading times and bugs like crazy. Not to mention the frequent hacks that are prevalent on there servers. I have experienced this first hand and many others too. Never will host with GoDaddy. I only buy domains from them and switch my DNS to another company. There CEO is running there business into the ground. There motto seems to be rope in as many customers and let them leave.

I have a few sites hosted with them, currently looking to move them all though; they are loading very slow, whenever I check the loading time with Pingdom, my sites are consistently slower than 80-90% of all websites tested. I wouldn't recommend their hosting to anyone.

I've hosted domain names with them for years, but I ended up hosting my wordpress site with them because they were one of two companies recommended because they had a one-click installation. I haven't had a problem, but it hasn't been that long; just under a year.
I hated their e-mail right away so I switched to a Gmail business account so I could have my own domain e-mail. Other than that and the sales pitches (yes they're maddening) I really haven't had a major problem, and when I had a minor one I got fast, live support.
All the stories to make me want to consider moving but it seems like a really big hassle to do.
