What's a fair Marketing swap for having my own personal fitness trainer?

I'm almost 45 and must be going through a mid life crisis, because not only am I doing the Great North Run....... (half marathon here in the UK....I know!! 13.1 miles EEEK!!)...... BUT for the first time in my life I joined a gym

I got my first fitness assessment this morning from one of the gym staff (I'm surprisingly fit for somebody who just sits behind a desk all day ) who also happens to be a personal trainer and was trying to enrol me as his client.

However, I spotted an opportunity for a bit of bartering.

He agreed that if I could come up with a way to help him, he would be willing to exchange services (he managed to get his teeth whitened for his wedding last year from another client who was a dentist).

This is his situation:

1) He has a web site but it is a Herbal Life store and not optimised and I am not sure if it can be.

2) He has a Facebook page but does nothing with it.

3) He wants to promote his personal trainer services AND is Herbal Life Nutritional products.

What do you think is a fair swap in exchange for me to have a personal trainer (£25 per hour)?

I was thinking of setting up a blog for him to help draw attention to his Herbal life store and run his Facebook campaign. I even thought about becoming a real life working testimonial showing how he can transform a weedy 45 year old into a strapping hunk of a man...although I am not sure if he can do miracles.

So if you can come up with some great ideas for a fair swap of services I would love to hear them.

Many thanks

Gary the weedy but soon to be a stud

The campaign idea transforming a weedy 45 year old sounds awesome! Keep a blog on the experience and sell it as a Kindle book also

Ok for your swap, you need to sit down and evaluate the type of time you will spend working on his sites. You will want to keep in mind the time you spend in consultation with him, keeping the Facebook active, etc.

It is going to be a lot of work so don't play cheap with yourself. It may help you to write up a simple one page proposal like you might for a regular client stating the objective, means to accomplish it etc. And you can give him a copy so he can be aware of expectations and goals.
It should be pretty actionable so you might say, I will do this, this and this and though no outcome is guaranteed it is likely we will achieve this and this.

Looking at your proposal put a monthly figure on your work efforts. You can break it down by the hour if you prefer. Then add more to that to cover yourself. Again value your time.

Once you have a clear cut proposal of what needs to be done it will give you a clearer picture of how to charge so that it is fair to all. Only you can decide what your time is worth for a trade but planning things out should help you get started.

      Great tips lilBlackdress

It has to be a fair swap on both sides so I was going to put some ideas down and then meet up with him to confirm the arrangements.

Working out the tasks by hour is a good suggestion.

I think that it might even be that I can do some bartering and also get paid work out of it too if I can come up with enough ideas to excite him.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

      Gary
PS. I think that the shame of exposing my skinny weedy body would be a great incentive to do some serious working out lol

When I worked with private clients I charged a monthly fee. You don't want to have to list out things by the hour like ...talked to client, wrote on Facebook wall etc. BUT Getting an idea of how many hours you will need to spend will give you a nice grip on what to charge. Then just tell him what you plan to do and how you will do it each month in exchange for X amount of training.

Just to note, it will take more time the first month to set things up so plan accordingly.

It is essential that you cover your time including consultation time. And the time it will take you to write up a short monthly report on what you have accomplished.

If you send me a PM with your email, I will send you a short and easy proposal you can adjust for your client.

Great North Run is a killer! I haven't done it (yet) but have watched my dad suffer many times! I've done similar in the past, whether it was with my local barber or a personal trainer also. The way I look at it is how much time can I give? If it's your personal trainer you're going to be seeing a lot of him, so offer something to him of real value which doesn't take you long to do and you know you can achieve quickly. For example in the past i've put together promotional videos for my barber shop, and promoted these videos for them in return of as many free hair cuts as I want. It didn't take me long to do my part of the deal and I done it well, and it doesn't take him long or cost him a lot to snip my hair every few weeks! Hope you see what I mean...

Would it not be better to JV with him rather than trade with him?

You promote his services, increase the perceived value of his services, book him up, create fitness plans, training videos and sell his supplements for a 50/50 split of the profits you make.

Done properly, that could be a real money spinner for both of you.

I definitely think that is something that I can work towards.

At the moment it is a brand new gym (Pure Gym, Gateshead which only opened last Thursday) and he is just building up his client base so my bartering will serve me well for now.

However, I think that once he sees the value of what I can do and the fact that I will probably need his services less (as I begin to look like Gerard Butler in 300!! ) it will be easier to 'sell' my services to him.

        Thanks for the tips

I am scared of the Great North Run now. It's only 17 weeks on Sunday (gulp!) and I can only run about 5 miles before collapsing.

It is one of the things I wanted to do before I die...the irony being that IT might actually kill me!!!! lol

I liked your bartering ideas with the barber and totally understand what you were saying about short time projects.

I think this will work well on a short term basis but will definitely be going for an upsell once he is established and he can see what I can do.

      Thanks for sharing
