Promoting Your Best Content

My goal is to send a lot of traffic to the best content on my sites. By best, I mean content that;

  • Provides value
  • Contains lots of helpful information
  • Has the potential to get shared
  • Is 700+ words long
So, here is what I plan on doing.

I will start with one website. I will go through all of my posts/articles on the website and determine which of them meets all of the above criteria.

I will save all of the links to my best articles in a word document for future reference.

I will take the first article on the list and do the following:

Bookmark the article to the top social bookmarking sites. (I only want to focus on social bookmarking sites that get traffic. It's not about backlinks.)

After bookmarking the article, I will then submit it to the top 3 article directories.

Once this is done, I will write an article that compliments the main article, include a link to the main article I'm promoting in that article, turn it into a PDF document, and then submit the document to document sharing sites.

For example, if my article was "How to Check Your Credit Report For Errors", the article that I would write and turn into a PDF document would be "10 Surprising Errors That Could Be on Your Credit Report". Yeah, it's a lame example but I think you get my point.

After this is done, I would basically do the same thing above but instead of creating an article and submitting it to document sharing sites, I would create a slide show presentation which, again, would compliment my main article.

I would just take the main points from the compliment article, make a quick slideshow presentation which would include a link to the main article in it, and then submit it to the sites that allow you to share your PowerPoint presentations.

I would then make a video out of that PowerPoint presentation and submit it to YouTube.

Once all of this is done, I would focus on other ways to get eyeballs on this article.

I would answer relevant questions on Yahoo Answers and put the link to the article in the resource section of my answers.

At this point, I am not too sure what I should do.

I know about most traffic generation methods like guest blogging, forum posting, social media, blog commenting, and paid traffic but I am only promoting one article as opposed to my entire site, therefore, I don't think that I should use all of these methods on one article, especially on one that has no monetary benefit.

My main goal is to get just enough traffic to the article to start getting shared by those who come across it. So, I guess I want the articles to get a lot of social interaction.

I plan to do this with every article that I believe fits the criteria I mentioned earlier in this post - for every website.

What do you guys think?

While as you say, you will get direct traffic from social bookmark sites, and from the other types of backlinking you mention, you should understand that your main article can ALSO get traffic from the search engines, thus you should consider how the search engines view backlinks, as well as doing backlinks for direct traffic.

So, for the search engines, the wider the range of different types of backlinks, the better. Plus, some of the additional methods of backlinking you mention, such as forum posting, are also likely to get you direct traffic.

So, overall, I'd suggest as wide a variety of backlink types as possible. Since you are making some backlinks, why not make your backlinks in a way that will get most traffic from search engines AS WELL AS direct traffic?

Here's the thing. Some of these articles were getting traffic from the search engines but all of the Google updates has caused them to receive little to no traffic at all. Basically, they don't rank well anymore. I'm trying not to rely on Google traffic.
