How long after a domain expires before you can buy it? I was doing some researxch and found one that expired on 2/28/2012 and so I plugged it into Godaddy and it said unavailable.

Godaddy has an auction for expired domains: https://auctions.godaddy.com/
Either the previous owner renewed it or somebody snatched it on the auctions.

If you find a great domain you want to buy at Godaddy auction, make sure you grab it fast.

Happened to me before. There was one nice aged domain name I found there (auctioned for $5). After clicked it and looking at the stats, I decided to wait and look for other domain.

When I get back and try to buy the one I had my eyes on, it said the domain was unavailable..but I can buy it from somewhere else (somebody had purchased it) and I can buy it at a higher price (I think around $50-80).

It will become available to the public 80 days after it expires.

Once it expires it enters a "Grace Period" of up to 45 days. This is so the registrant has a fair opportunity to renew.

After the 45 days, it enters a "Redemption Period" of 30 days. During this period, it is no longer available for the registrant to renew, but the domain registrar can retrieve it, usually at a cost of a few hundred dollars.

The last phase is "Pending Delete". This phase lasts only 5 days. Once you see "Pending Delete" in the WHOIS information, you'll know it is in the LAST 5 day period. After the 5 days, the domain is released to the public, and anyone can register it.
