How to make between $612-$962.25 writing articles in 1 month...

Ok...

Thought I'd update everyone with my article writing experiment... Basically, wanted to see 'how much' money it would be possible to make, by working fairly hard at it. (This is simply writing articles for other people, not doing my own article marketing or anything like that)... (For 'reference', I "made" about $919.63 last month. I wanted to continue this experiment for another month to see if it would grow significantly, but it seems to have remained around the same amount...)

Anyways...

Basically I "made" $612 as of today's date (or $962.25, waiting for an additional payment of about $300, the work has been completed, just waiting for payment)... for approximately one months "work"... I probably spent about 60 hours doing that... (maybe a bit less, I didn't track it as much this time, so it is a bit of a guess. Maybe 40 hours). But basically about $10.20/hour, or $16.04/hour)... Not necessarily any 'sexy' amount, but here is what I figured out.

Conclusions:

1. It is possible to make money writing for other people.
2. You will actually need to 'work' at it.
3. You probably won't get super rich at it (i.e., no get rich quick scheme here). But, you can make a 'basic' living at it if you wish.
4. Most of the people you will write for will be great, but you will get the occasional idiot (i.e., someone who is 'upset' that they 'have' to pay for quality, and can't talk you down to $1/hour -- and someone that accepts your work, but then tries to talk you down again -- just exceptionallly 'cheap' individuals, not 'thrifty' -- but literally just cheap so that you won't want to work with them again because of their personality). But again, there are still some great people you 'meet'. You also do get some idiots that make outrageous requests and/or demands. (I.e., write a 100 page fully edited, fully researched, book, be of publisher quality, etc, for $100 or less). When I see that, I think it is really funny.
5. It is exceptionally competitive. You actually do have people that are willing to work the equivalent of anywhere from $1-$5/hour. The quality may not be that great (or even good), but not everyone cares. (Some people just want to plaster content on their websites in the hopes of getting a few ad cents here and there, so $2-3/article works for them). And you will most likely be competing with 'teams' of writers from India, and other teams that don't necessarily write quality content (but rip it off from other sources)...

So.........

Would I continue to do this? Probably at least a bit, because it is kind of fun. Would I recommend that you do this? If you need some quick cash, then yes, I recommend it. If you love writing, and are perfectly happy sitting at home, watching t.v., playing the occassional computer game, and eating/sleeping/going to the washroom when you feel like it, then yes, I would say it is good... But if you are looking for 'financial' freedom, then I would say it might be a bit challenging/difficult. It will give you some financial freedom (obviously with the extra cash you make), but you would basically need to work at it/work fairly hard to probably make more than $30k/year...

So was it a good experience? Definitely yes. Although the money wasn't necessarily 'spectacular', I did learn a number of things (including learning about a lot of different topics I probably would have never thought to have researched on my own)...

Would I recommend it? If you are new to IM, and want to get your feet wet, then definitely yes... When you make your first "dollar" online, it will be a great feeling. Of course, you can then start to do something else , but this is 'one' way of actually 'making' money.

Anyways, hope this helps!

Thanks,

Johnathan

That's the best part of any freelance work. The money may not be great, but it helps gets a little extra to put into hosting, etc, and you learn about some other niches that might be good to check out.

I'm doing freelance work myself and I agree with this post. Good job! Now just write a report about writing articles and the freelance lifestyle and offer it for free as a bribe for an opt in list. Then you can make extra money marketing to those people.

      Hi,

Probably the equivalent of about 150 articles (the reason I say 'probably' is because some 'single' articles might have been 1000-1500 words each, etc)

I am starting my own writing service. I am new to IM but have been writing for years. I just want to, like you said, "get my feet wet" and get a little bit of income coming in while I get started with my IM campaign. If anyone needs work, check out my link, I'll be more than happy to work with you. If anyone has any advice they wish to share with me, my ears are open = )

If you enjoy writing and you're good at it, you can make a much nicer income with higher paying freelance writing jobs (you are correct that you won't get rich writing SEO articles for other people). OR you could learn how to profit off your own SEO articles that you're writing for others. Obviously they are worth more to your clients then what they are paying you for.

Yes, that is one thing I realized/learned... If someone can afford to pay me "x" amount of dollars (whether it is $20 or $200), then obviously they have figured out how to make that money back and then some...

This has been my general experience as well, only I did it for a few years until I wised up (that career path is prone to burnout). All of it is true. And yes, you do meet some wonderful people. I stayed in touch with one of my clients and we're brewing up a joint project together. We ended up chatting once as we were closing up a project and realized we had A LOT in common.

      Jonathan,

thanks for this post..it's inspired me somewhat!

Just one question (and i know there are going to be certain standard answers!) but where do you find people to write for.

This is definitely something i have been looking at recently, but i have done a few jobs for people of DP, but let's face facts, DP is the poorer, cheaper and spammy version of the Warrior Forum (just my personal opinion!) and it's hard to get more than $2 for an article and i know that i am definitely worth more than that!

Other places that advertise for writers, because maybe of my post count or lack of experience, i can and may and will be overlooked, no matter how good the quality of my work is. It's just very hard to get your foot on the first rung of the ladder. I have been unfortunate that some people who i have worked for, fall into the categories that you have mentioned above. i am always told that the quality of my work and my punctuality is great, but then i get people who want to haggle over the price or just disappear of the radar without payment!

I'm just an honest Joe looking for an honest "employer" and just need to be given a break..so where do i go?

Any tips for researching when writing articles for others? I have had a few freelance article writing jobs and really enjoyed them, but occasionally there is a topic I have a hard time finding anything to write about!

Lol, yes... That is one thing I realized... Sometimes article writing looks 'really' easy... (I.e., say you are asked to write 10 articles, you might think 'oh that should take me 10 minutes!'... but in reality it takes a lot longer)...

It is easy to feel a bit burnt out, unless you balance it with other activities...

Jonathan, I can totally relate with what you're saying. I recently created my website (see my sig) I can't seem to get clients from the site except for my personal clients. A lot of people are writing for $5/article or less. I know my rates are not unreasonable, some writers/SEO companies I know are charging up to $55/article. But it's still difficult.

Learn how to build websites with proper SEO.

With an effectively monetized, properly SEO'd 150 page website you could make well over $1,000 a month--with bare minimum continued maintenance.

Actually, there is not really any secret other than just sitting down and doing it...

It also depends on whether you've written articles before, and then also your 'comfort' level with the topic... (i.e., if you were writing about 'eating food', that would probably be a lot easier than say writing a medical disertation on the pros and cons of a new medication)...

      To improve your article writing...

      1. Practise.
      2. Read more (so you are more familiar with a variety of different topics).

Actually, it is to gain experience within this industry to see what works and what doesn't... Plus, I am still learning what is necessary to generate income from my 'personal' articles...

I too am trying to gain some experience of writing articles on a regular basis. Can you please share where you either advertise your services or how you have found "writing jobs" that pay a half decent amount!

Great to hear about everyones experiences and opinions. I've been getting paid to write for a while now, but I've written very few articles because most people won't pay enough for them. People will however pay good money to have an ebook written. I've gotten up to $2000 for a 200 page ebook. But the best money is in copywriting, you can get more for a sales letter with less actual writing work.

I made $2,270.37 in my first month of freelance writing online on RentACoder. People usually think this site is for programming jobs and it is, but there are also copywriting, ghostwriting and article writing jobs there.

I'm also in the process of putting up some free information on making $2000+ a month on rentacoder at rentacodercash.com (Nothing for sale on this site), and you can also search facebook for Brian Cassingena, I have a page and a group there.

Interesting post Jonathan, sounds like you can make a decent enough income by writing for other people consistently and reliably! I think it can very insightful in finding out what's popular in other niches as well as getting a feel for other markets, and the types of customers as well. You probably know more about a broad range of niches that you did previously, if you're writing for others. Nice one!

Yes, you can make money doing this. Here's the problem: once the assignments are over, you have to do new ones to make the same money. To some this may be obvious, but the power of multiplying your efforts cannot be underestimated. Building niche/affiliate/sales websites will help you write less and earn more.

I am also a ghostwriter, and my experience has been great.

My first month out, I made approximately $800. The next month, I doubled that income to $1600! I now average around $2000 per month ghostwriting, but that is just part of my online business. I also market affiliate products.

I would recommend this to anyone needing to make some extra income, especially in this economy. Writing isn't that difficult, and the more you write about a subject the easier it becomes.

I have written on everything from exotic dancing and brand marketing to affiliate marketing, skin care products, personal injury law and bodybuilding. And these are only a few topics I have written about! Sometimes you learn more than you really want to Just kidding.

Anyway, I would tell anyone thinking about it to just go for it. If you find it isn't for you, politely retire and move on to something else.

Seems like a great way to make a considerable income consistently, I guess you want to be wary if and when the niche you have selected has its interest dry up. As other posters have mentioned that I guess its good to spread your skills over a wide variety of niches so you can always have something else to go on to when finished. Nice post!
