Membership Site Question's Please Help

Hey Everyone,

I am looking for some answers from current membership site owners and would really appreciate some of your help.

So anyway I am planning on starting my first membership website in a couple of weeks I already have a plan for it.

But To be honest i have no experience with membership sites because this will be my first.

So First Question:
What kind of forum script do i get for membership sites?
Can I use free scripts or if i really want to start a good site i should spend some money?

I want to set up the forum so i can be a couple days ahead so that i can set a post when to be posted so i can do Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 ... Do all forums come with this feature or only certain ones.

Also I wanted to give video instructions each day or as many days as I could what kind of program do i need so i can put video's on the forum with my voice but showing the computer screen so i can show them step by step how to do stuff i see these kind of video's all the time but i don't know how to do it.

Also are there any guides anyone would recommend on how to run a membership site i know i saw one by the Rhodes brothers a couple of months back but i can't find it?

If you have any suggestions on how to run a successful membership site i would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

Eric

          1. For scripts, I use WP-Wishlist. It only works with Wordpress-based sites, and it's fantastic. Beautifully designed. Costs $97 and is worth every penny and then some.

          2. For a forum, I installed Simple Press, a Wordpress plugin. Works like a charm and integrates with Wishlist, so members don't have to log in twice. It's free and excellent.

          3. For video, use Camtasia to shoot your tutorials. Host them on Viddler and embed in your site.

          4. For spreading things out so your videos appear one day after one another, again, that's why Wordpress rocks. Just create posts for each video, set the Publish date for each accordingly and they'll appear on your site when you want them to. Couldn't be easier.

To see my site in action, go to The CBI Clubhouse - a Community for Children's Book Writers Writing Picture Books, Easy Readers, Young Adult Books and More!

          Best,

You can use vbulletin as forum + member script.

Sometimes on WHT, people are selling away their vbulletin licenses at discount prices.

Are there any other programs or is camtasia the only one?

As for starting a membership site I really dont know if you are thinking beyond the forum stuff because I understand that some ARTICLE submission sites allow you to copy the scripts and software that they used in establishing their sites you my wish to do a search on this as a starter

For a free alternative to Camtasia you can try camstudio (dot) org - its open source.

My first advice is get a budget, you try and do this on the cheap thats what your going to get a cheap set up and no growth.

If your not planning on making more than the cost of the things mentioned by others why are you even starting this?

for me i like to use the following:

Joomla 1.5 - to power the overall site
AEC - joomla component to handle payments/subscription
Community Builder - joomla component to handle users
JACL - Optional joomla component to handle access control levels if required

For the message board you can use a native Joomla one ie Fireboard, or you can use PHPBB and use a bridge to connect your users to it.

You can get a lot of open source plugins that also allow you to handle security, backups, video, content, private messaging, etc, very effectively and efficiently.

I have created many sites like this with some sites having well over 5000+ users

Should you need any further information please dont hesitate to ask.

    Thanks

Well this is what I am planning on doing im going to try to start the site for less then 100 dollars and give it a test run for one month if we get members and i think the website has a lot of potential i will spend the money to upgrade everything so that i can have a nice website.

But yes i have a budget.

        sorry eric

        i missed your reply

joomla is an extremely flexible content management script, however with third party addons and an understanding of its inner workings you can turn it into pretty much anything you want!

this an example of what we we recently did with a joomla website - www.cowboysdancehall.com

There are over 4000+ plugins for joomla that you can use many are open source too, meaning if your on a budget - being open source too you can usually customize them to meet your requirements or design look.

im working on some tutorials specifically aimed at membership sites and joomla so will let you know when they are ready...

but to get you started head over to joomla.org

    1.: Use wordpress
2.You can set articles with future publishing dates in wordpress
3.Use yourmember plugin. It has a lot of features you would want including recurring payment.
    4.Make a forum using simplepress

Free alternative to Camtasia - someone else mentioned camStudio, or I prefer Jing (from jingproject.com ) - looks a bit more interesting than the usual software, and does a great job producing little flash tutorials.
