Time to say goodbye

Hey guys and girls

This is one of those goodbye threads and yep I have chucked in the towel but not for the reason that I was not making money, more to do with where I was at and how much I have burned out

See I was lucky when I started out put up a PLR website that had all the graphics and wot not , and did some ad words and got real lucky and made bank so I was hooked. and for the last 3 years have been playing around with the offline world and got lucky there as well , now you are wondering why throw in the towel? well where I lived was in rural QLD Australia and the town had only about 10,000 all up and if you aint born here you not going to get work here.:rolleyes:

So I through my self into making money on the net and here lies the problem how many hours do you work? me..well about 12-16 a day and this then changed how I was and became...well the best word I could use is an ARSE to everyone around me but I did not see there was a problem

So after loosing my relationship of the last 6years I came to decision that this was not for me sooooo I deleted my external drives of about 960GB of all the software and courses and ebooks , graphics etc etc and now I could not be happier.

So to all my friends on the forum thanks for all the fun

I am off to the US next week for a well deserved holiday

Cheers guys hope you all have a great life and who knows maybe I will check in once and while

    Do not delete sites .... just go to your vacation.

    I would always suggest to wait for 72 hours (and do nothing these days, including checking emails) before doing anything serious that will change your life for 180 degrees

    • To me I think your first bullet point "Don't let your online business become an addiction" and your last "don't sacrifice relationships to meet your business goals faster. Life is pretty lonely when you meet your goals and there is nobody to celebrate with" are the ones I continually have to remember.

      IM could easily become an exciting addiction for me (I think I have that personality type) and I am married and have a child (and it took us a LONG time to finally have that child). I think that is the one thing that keeps me grounded is seeing my baby girl and being reminded how fast she is growing.

      Interestingly, your third point about outsourcing so you don't work long hours... I think IMers (like me) enjoy those long hours sometimes

      Anyway, thanks for the post

      By the way, a good movie to watch (kinda cheesy, but can be thought provoking) about this is "Click" with Adam Sandler.

  • In the many years I've been doing this (built my first website in 1995) I've seen this happens all too many people.

    The way to avoid itis to stay focused, following the footsteps of someone who's been successful before you know your limits. These are the limits not just of your time but also of your technical ability and skills for all the various Internet marketing components required.

    Stick to what your best at what you enjoy and find ways to get the other parts done for you by other people just don't do them at all.

    For me the big breakthrough came when I realised that I could just ignore 98% of the activities and so-called "essential" marketing activities that people recommended to me.

    I lost all my purchased courses and homestudy courses away and just got cranking creating my own product. I attach myself to a couple of successful mentors and the rest, as they say, is history. With my first product launch I made a couple of hundred thousand dollars in Internet marketing space and haven't looked back since.

    • Oh man, that's going back. Boy how time flies. I remember buying your 'Adsense Videos' course back in the day. One of the first products I purchased and I wasn't even interested in Adsense! I bought it more for the education on marketing and to see exactly how you had set things up -- since (if my memory serves me correctly) Joel Comm had helped you set a lot of that up?

      Those are some names I haven't heard of in a while.

  • Good luck m8. I totally agree this is not going to fit everyone even if you are successful. It is quite scary when you think how much time you do devote to this and how it can drag you in stealing sleep and all spare time.

    I hope you have great success in the offline world and find all that you need to be happy.

    Working 10+ hours a day is something a lot of us have in common.

    When we're old(er) will the most important things in our lives be how long we worked, how much money we were able to earn? Or will it be the memories we created by spending time with the people who matter the most to us?

    That's some of the best advice I think you can get.

    If you're looking to free up your time, then structure your business in a way that frees up your time.

    If your goal is making the most money possible at all costs, then your life outside of business may suffer.

    I know too many Internet marketers who make 5 to 10x more than I do but work 5 to 10x more than I do.

    You have to structure your business so that you enjoy what you're doing and if you want more freedom, I think you have to be focused more on that than increasing income or sustaining a certain level of income.

    Many people think differently than that, so I can't speak for everyone.

    When i saw the title i thought oh deer lord not another one of those "suicide" threads where the OP is threatening to quit only to be talked down by the drones. And a few posts later he/she is once again committed to make those millions online.

    I don't know the OP but i know where he is coming from. All i can say is good luck dude and believe me you have made a good decision...

    • Exactly my sentiments too. No need to make a decision so brash he's just going to find a new job, and approach it with the same level of commitment anyway.

      Workaholics don't become sober by switching jobs or careers imo. There is so many other more sensible things that can be recommended but I'm assuming theres a lot more to the story than what his post said.

      If I was him I'd just find a friend to market with (I already have one who comes over every other day and we work on stuff together) but we also do friends stuff, joking around and having fun and what not. Makes work that much easier/fun to do.

      Either way not like I'm going to try convincing him out of it. All I'll say is good luck on your future endevours and hopefully you find something you like better. =]

    14 -16 hr days? Yikes. Good thing you're getting off voluntarily - much more of that and your body might have just made sure that you'd never touch a computer again. The only way I stay on here is by having one foot in cyberspace and one in the real world.

    Have fun in the US. Let us know where ya went and what your impression of the country was. It'll be fun to hear about.

  • Sound advice on this thread. I can see very easily how this industry which we enter aiming for the 'internet lifestyle' and 'freedom' can actually become more of a JOB than anything else. You may not have a boss, but you are tied to the desk.

    Rob Fore gave me some good advice. He told me to relax into it. Be prepared to take regular breaks. It will still be there when you get back. He also reminded me to steer clear of anything that looked like it was going to chain you to your desk. That is why I ahve ditched SEO and link-building + article marketing. It was these things that were pulling me away from my family, only to find the hard work undone by PENGUIN!!

    Focus on list building - that is my advice. Enjoy this, but remember to have a life!

  • Grasp life while you can - hey, it's a sad life if you are sat in front of your machine for more than 8 hours a day... surely IM is a lifestyle choice...live it! Good luck to ya!
  • Time away from IM can definitely help. I'm fortunate enough to take a few vacations a year and I always come back feeling refreshed, recharged and FULL of new exciting ideas to make money from internet marketing!

    I guess the hard part sometimes is actually STOPPING the ideas and focusing in on one thing that really gets results.

    HOW TO STOP DISTRACTIONS

    I keep an Ideas Book by my desk and write down all the "killer" ideas I get in there so I can get them out of my head. You then free yourself to focus on the getting your current project finished. I can hand on heart say that after many years of doing this I have NEVER once dipped into that Ideas Book for an idea! Not needed to! :-)

  • OP that decision took a lot of guts. Do what's right for you. Doesn't matter what we think, you are the only person living your life! I also spend 16 hours/day on IM and sometimes 20 hours/day on the bad crunch times (having those right now, in fact). Since you already know what works, you're 90% ahead of everyone else and if and when you are ready to get back in the game, I'm sure you'll have the tools you need to succeed again. I wish you well.

    • I echo these words.... I fell subtly in such a scenario multiple times in the past that I felt nerdy already... I backed off a bit and spent more time with the kids and my wife and I have not been more happier since. Work, finances and family life have to be balanced.

  • Working online is tough. It's very easy to get caught up in everything and to shut everyone that's not behind your screen out. I've been there and completely understand where your coming from. All I can say is good luck and wish you all the best.
