Building a website for Mobile viewers

Ok. I understand seo. Build a website and get visitors. But with moblile marketing, do I build a site specifically for mobile? How is that done? Where do I host it?

I have some merchants that have mobile versions of their website. I would like to build sites directing to these links but I don't know where to start.

Any tips or help would be appreciated.

If the site is Wordpress, you can easily make any site mobile friendly automatically with WP Touch Pro plugin. Nothing else to do but use the plugin.

If it's not a Wordpress site, you can buy a mobile template and create your site in a mobile version and upload it to a subdomain of your domain, such as mobile.domain.com or m.domain.com.

The WP Touch plugin simply makes your Wordpress posts and pages viewable on a mobile device. It does not create nice looking mobile websites though as you are probably used to seeing. The look and feel of WP Touch is more suited to blogs rather than websites for service based businesses.

  • A large percentage of mobile users are using smartphones. The browsers on these phones can handle regular sites pretty well. Unless you have some special needs, you should just build a regular website.

I know because I built a mobile plugin for restaurant owners to make their sites work "better" on mobile phones only to be beaten by better browsers. Just be sure not to use flash, it is not supported on the iphone.

Responsive designs are becoming very popular. You have a couple of responsive
Wordpress themes that make your site look nicely on all screen sizes. And your
    site will still load fast.

But if you don't have the possibility to use a responsive design, using a plugin is
the next best choice for me.

Responsive isn't always the answer since I don't want to show my mobile viewers the same information as my desktop viewers because both are usually after two very different types of information.

Good mobile design is not just about making a site fit the screen properly. It's also about proper prioritization of content to suit mobile users.
