I'm overwhelmed with all the avenues to get traffic as there's so many. I think the best way right now would be to jump in and try a myraid of ways, which I am currently doing, then when I see results, focus on 1 or 2, sort of like the 80/20 rule.

Anyone else have some extra advice?

From my personal experience, advice won't really help but distract you even more. You already answered your question yourself...Try a few methods and scale up on what works.

Or you could choose a traffic method and master it. If you're trying PPV traffic, search, and social media at once you're really going to overwhelm yourself. I prefer to find one source and work on that.

This is very true actually. Everytime I come on here for advice to "gain clarity" I wind up leaving even more confused than before.

You need to make a MIND MAP of all your goals, and exactly how to plan on reaching them. Then tape that map right by your computer. If you're not working on your goals, then you don't really want to make money, you just want to live vicariously through people who ARE.

      G/luck!

If you jump and try all the method you have heard you will probably not achieve anything. I speak from experience. I have failed in traffic generation because I never sticked to one method and really do all the work it requires.

Trying your hand at multiple traffic generation techniques until you
find one that sticks is a sure fire way to burn yourself out. I suggest
you choose no more than 2 methods and milk the crap out of them
for the next 3-6 months and evaluate your results.

I felt the same exact way when I first started. I then made myself to just stop and decide what to start with and tried one thing and one thing only until I figured it out and then moved on.

I know how you feel, I think we've all been there.

Doing to many things at once is what killed me in the beginning. My advice would be to do 1 or 2 things for a while, until you can decide if it is working or not. Dump what isn't working and add 1 other thing.

The question is what's already working for you? Once you find what works, it's just a matter of rinsing & repeating!

Personally I love solo ads as a quick, targeted & effective way of driving traffic... but that's just me

Doing one or two things well to generate traffic sounds wise. But, I would always keep my ear opened for a low effort/high reward traffic source.

Some of what you do for SEO will generate traffic. Examples; blog comments, forum participation, social media--in general, and guest hosting. These avenues are always worth exploring--as time permits.

It's what you do when no one is watching

If you're just getting started, remember that it'll probably take you a bit of time to get the hang of how a traffic source works. SEO, social media, PPC, etc. - they all have their learning curve so just take it one day at a time. Truly educate yourself on the traffic source that you pick and work it till you get it working or learn that it's not conducive to your business model.

    • I feel I must add my weight to all those that have gone with the option of choosing one (or two at the very most) methods.

I would try listing the options along with the pros and cons for you and your circumstances for each. This should indicate to you the one (or two) that is/are most appropriate and then stick with these until you know for certain they are or aren't the ones for you.

Whatever you go for, I wish you all the best.

      regards
      Andy

Yes that sounds like a good idea to me. I always start small and see how it goes, then make adjustment to my plan.

Stop procrastinating and get on with it! :-) Just go with your gut feel about ONE traffic method that you think you will enjoy doing (this is key) and give it your all. That's my two cents.

I'm not going to repeat what others have already said (stick to 1-2 sources and try to master them), but would like to make an additional point that allows you to be a little bit more specific:

It's easy for people to claim a traffic source didn't work after trying it for a month. Finding out if a traffic source works (= mastering it) takes 6-12 months or longer though. And that's important because of guess what? Budget.

If you decide to choose a paid traffic source, then you'd better realize that it will STILL take 6-12 months until you've figured it out AND you'll be paying money while figuring it out. If you don't have the budget to burn through money for several months with little to no results (because you're still learning about the traffic source), then just don't. I've been there: couple thousand euros (EUROS as in... 1.3 and you'll get a rough dollar amount) down the drain. And I couldn't even test it long enough until it worked.

Then I switched to SEO, a free traffic source. No more budget problems and guess what? I mastered it. The point is not that you should do SEO, but that you should start with a FREE traffic source (free as in it doesn't cost money; it will always cost time and energy).

Until you have the money in the bank to screw around with a paid source for half a year? Fugget about it.

You can outsourced some of the work. You don't need to handle everything. Find a freelancer to help you with some task to drive traffic.

if you spread too thin, you have already lost.
That seems to be a recurring theme on the forum. It's very difficult to focus on one thing because there's so much out there. Once you can do that, you will see success, no matter which one you pick.
Then, when you succeed enough in that field, you can start moving on or make that avenue even bigger and better

    don't spread thin!

My advice is to find something that works and develop it before moving on to the next traffic generation strategy, After 4 years in IM I can tell you that there are a lot of strategies out there and most work - if it helps I find Doc stock and slide share great traffic generators right now and press releases are going ballistic and also of course good old seo has it's rewards too - but be careful when considering buying back links - Pandas are watching.

      Hope this helps

I am going to echo the general sentiment here and say stick with just a couple methods. Although I am very new to IM, I can see that trying to spread everything out like that will burn me out mentally, more so as I will not be able to give my all to any one technique, and as such get minimal results from all the ones I am trying.. in the end, it will be discouraging. Anyway, I wish you well in whichever way you choose to go.

Being new on this and other IM forums, I can see how easy it is to get caught up in information overload. I believe being able to keep focus on YOUR thing and doing that thing YOUR way will be essential to any type of long term success with this field. Hope that helps a little.

Focus only on 1 traffic generation technique.
If you focus on too many things at once, you're going to spread yourself too thin...

Try to use facebook. after you got some results from it, move on to other things like pinterest which is hot now, and then to the other methods.

Remember to track your traffic, so you know which method works the best for you.
Once you found the traffic generation which works well for you, then scale it up.

Getting overwhelmed is not entirely bad. Going into the stage means you had learned a great deal and done so much research.

But next thing is to get out of overwhelmed stage. This is my experience previously when I started. I will look into what I wanted to do. Once I have decided the niche and the strategy, I will work on it. Focus and consistently doing it. Always repeating the same thing. At one point, I promised myself not to buy anything, or even sign up for new opt in. I will only read emails from those that are similar niche and strategy to stop me from derailing again.

It has worked very well on me, and I do hope you can go over this stage and be successful!

What I think you should do is creating new techniques on getting traffic or maybe experimenting on new ways to get targeted traffic, what i do is brainstorm, and think of new ideas on traffic techniques then I put them to ACTION.

    Kindest,
