Decided for change of life

I officially decided it is time for a change of life. I currently work for GE making very good money but it does not put me where I need to in life. As a hobby I have been doing web design/programing for over 15 years and I believe now is the time to act on it. Make it more than just a hobby.
I am trying to decide how to transition out of GE. My wife says just go ahead and quit... great things will happen because of my determination to be happy and successful .
Should I journal my journey on the web?

Wow that is complicated, i was in the same position as you a week ago.
I had a great pay, nice lease from work, everything was perfect yet some how i felt stuck and scared of the future so i just acted on it.

No one can point you nor tell you what is right, it's your path, tons of luck buddy!

I don't recommend just leaving your job if it's a good one and especially if you have a family to support.

Web design/programming is only one end of the internet marketing spectrum, if that's what you're going to do.

Do you want to be a freelance web designer or an internet marketer? Do you want to offer services or promote other's products for a set commission?

Sometimes you just got to bite the bullet and say enough is enough, while you still got some mileage and enthusiasm left inside. Otherwise age catches up (like me) and you get filled with remorse over opportunities that passed you by.

Incidentally, which country are you based David?

Sorry but no...Great things won't happen. I am sure your wife believes a lot in you & wishes you to be super successful in whatever you do but do not quit your job.

You won't magically discover ways to make a full time living out of the blue even if you have a lot of talent in a certain craft...If you quit your job now, you will be shooting in the dark and you will have more chances of failing than winning.

It would be better if you kept your job & still did something online on the side with your spare time. Once you have something solid setup which you can bank upon financially, then you can think about quitting your job.

You don't quit untill you are earning some income online that can at least get you by.
The last thing you want for yourself is stress about how are you going to make ends meet?
Trying to be productive in that environment would not be a wise thing.

I would also recommend recording your journey, both to analyze what you can do better moving forward. I'd also say it might not be best to quit your job just yet, unless you have a solid plan of action you will stick to and some savings set aside just in case things don't go the way you expect them to at first.

Where do you need to be? Important question. Make sure you've got an answer.

Sometimes IM seems like the answer to burnout. But consider this: Much of IM is just as dreary as your full-time job probably seems to you now. Check out some of the "working at home" threads to get a realistic and stark perspective.

I took a hobby (antiques) and turned it into a successful online jewelry business. But it took years. It took 2 1/2 years for my jewelry website to really boom. Are you willing to work that long and hard before you see a return? Are you willing to accept that where you start may be many long, weary miles from where you end?

It would be very unwise to quit GE until you are making exactly or more than you need on a monthly basis to pay the bills and live. You also need a full year's income in the bank to fall back on.

In this economy with job so scarce, leaving a good paying job for something that will not support you and your family is a terrible idea.

Totally agree. I am in a similar situation as the OP so I work my full time job to support my wife and kids and I work my full time job as an affiliate so that I can eventually make it my only job.

I want to thank everyone for their opinion. I have decided to document my journey as seeing it in print will also help guide me down the right path.
A little about me...I am married to a great wife and she is very supportive in every way. We both are 40 years of age with no children. Do we want children?...yes, but we have tried and this is the path we are on. Sometimes the path is handed to you with out control. And yes, adoption is still being talked about.
My whole life I have always felt like there has to be more to this (meaning life) then the whole go to work, go home, go to sleep and get up to do it again. I have come to relise that this is now my time to grab life and control it from this point on. I want to find what truly makes me happy and make a life around that. I have 40 years of experience and now is the time to fine tune my skills and make it all come together.
Thanks again for your input. There are no wrong choices to make in life, only wrong choices by society standards. Choices one chooses to make are paths that lead us to more paths. Wrong or right... it is a path.

It seems to be that you have thought about this for a while now.
You will take action, and action will be rewarded.

I find it honest of you to post about your life, and I think that you will reach what you want with honesty and courage (the courage of choosing).

    Hi David,
I think we can all relate to wanting more out of a life than a 9 - 5 job that we don't enjoy. That's why most of us are here

I would like to mention two things: If you are in the U.S. you need to consider what you're going to do about health insurance. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal when you're healthy but it can be devastating to face an accident or illness without any insurance. (might not be a problem if you're located somewhere else)

Also, you mentioned you might want to adopt children. I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure most adoption agencies will look at your employment history. Even if you're earning money by being self-employed it can be harder to prove.

None of this is meant to distract you from your goals -- only to give you a couple of things you should think of in advance.

    Good luck! Rose

Thanks Rose for the advice. Yes I have thought about everything....trust me everything...lol.
I have a plan in place that I will reveal in time, but only in time. I have to keep certain things as is, but I am now on my new path and I have to be honest that there is no looking back.
Health insurance, adoption, this, that and the other are all mind obstacles that hold us all back from achieving our true selfs in life. The one thing that I have learned is that things always have a way of working in the end.

It's always difficult knowing whether or not you are making the right choices in life, but I wish you much success in whatever you decide to do.

I agree with your wife. And yes, I think you should journal it.

    Two things.

First, don't burn any bridges with GE. I'm in a place where I don't see anything really happening for the next few months, so I'm interviewing with my previous employer next week while I figure out my next move. It's one thing to be full-time and control your own destiny, but Microsoft are willing to pay what I make from IM in a year for three months of work. I've no reason to pass that up right now.

Second, in your journal, the most important parts are the ones that embarrass and depress you. The hard times. The rough patches. The failures. It's those things that matter. In the future, you'll look back during other tough times and say "hey - I got through that one." It's easy to journal success. Be sure to journal failure just as quickly and in every bit as much detail.
