What tools do you use to protect your computer (PC) from viruses?

I use:
windows firewall
windows security essentials
malwarebytes

I need an alternative to malwarebytes. To often it blocks programs I want to run and doesn't give tell it's blocking it.

thanks, RMX

I don't use any... I just avoid downloading stuff I never paid for and haven't had a virus in 8+ years following that guideline. Computer also runs much better and lower chance of it screwing up my other software products I use as well.

I'm for real. I have connected to plenty of customer computers the past few years to check why they have issues with my product. 99% of the time, they have downloaded so much crap that was cracked/hacked it wasn't funny and they had a F*** ton of viruses. In addition to the yahoo's that think it's cool to have multiple AV programs which just causes more problems than good.

I don't aimlessly click on links in my emails.

I don't visit random unknown websites, matter fact all website's I do visit are sites much like ESPN.com and other big-name well known news outlets.

        I don't download stuff I haven't paid for.

        8+ years, no issues yet.

However, I couldn't say the same thing for when I did have a virus and did have an AV program installed and did do all the things I do not do anymore.

You can get viruses just visiting a website. Not meant in an offensive way at all so please don't take it that way. But you've been lucky. Not smart.

Think because you only visit safe sites you're ok? Think again. All it takes is visiting an expired domain (plenty of those linked to in threads right here on WF) that some malware spreader has bought and loaded with pop-up malware and trojans and BAM... you're a victim.

I like avast too but they've been getting annoying with the seemingly more frequent re-subscription alerts for the free version. Thinking about buying.

I did have paid Kaspersky but an issue arose & somehow after contacting Kaspersky I was cut off the call after the operator was in the process of tweaking my account... cut a long story short it meant I had to re-insert the disc into my drive which I could not find (there were 100s of days left for the service) but heyho! sh.. happens... I had to resort to old tactics...

These options are both good for free or paid alternatives...

        Avira
        Avast
        Microsoft Security Essentials
        Panda cloud

I changed from the Microsoft Security Essentials to Avira because the former made my system work real slow (vista engine). I also know that many really big computer firms use Avira like it was God. I did start off with Avast for free just to be rid of all known germs then when the free service ran out (& because it affected my 'puters performance slightly) I opted for paid Avira option which you can also get for free (long-term - I was already familiar with the free version beforehand).

        Hope this helps

Again - I haven't had a virus in 8 plus years. I don't visit websites that would have viruses either or AKA not trusted well known sites. I do not click on random links around the net.

I wish you good luck with that plan, Matthew. I admit I'm surprised it's lasted you 8 years, but I acknowledge that there have to be some "statistical outliers", sometimes. You don't actually use the internet very much, I imagine?

No - just 16 hours daily..Not much at all.

People are forgetting, you actually have to DOWNLOAD junk to get a virus. Click on crazy links from people or sites you do not trust. Not having their windows OS up to date. It's not as easy as you think to get a virus.

When you get those - OH YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD THIS PLUGIN TO VIEW in a popup window - obviously you don't click on it, if you need anything download it manually directly from the source. I mean it's pretty simple to avoid viruses IMO

I don't think they're forgetting that: they may just (unlike yourself?) be bearing in mind that that can happen automatically, without your "doing" anything.

No - I don't have it turned off!

The websites that would infect your comp with viruses from java are setup like that from the beginning from the person that runs the site generally. You will not get a virus from browsing WELL KNOWN safe websites. IE; Foxnews, MSN, etc etc..

Pretty obvious - stay off of porn / warez / black** websites and you should be safe. That doesn't mean that you should click on the suspicious looking link that was spammed all over facebook..

It really is just common sense browsing..

Want to view porn ? - go to a comp with an AV program

We must have slightly different standards/concerns, I think: "generally" isn't quite good enough for me. Apologies for the interrogation: to be honest, I'm always interested to encounter very extreme minority opinions in discussions here, as one can sometimes learn something from them.

I wish you good luck with your lack of protection, anyway.

I have no clue what sites you dudes are browsing, but i assure you as a few others said, there really isn't a need for an AV program provided you practice common sense.

Granted, the viruses people tend to get are generally a new virus that your AV program wouldn't remove anyway forcing you to download a separate removal tool.

I've had to help fix quite a few family and friends computers over the years. The problems always stem from anti virus trials, or their annual memberships have ended.

I've also helped with a few that ask "Why is my system is running so slow? I'll just take it into best buy and have them fix it". I look at their running processes, and its an antivirus doing its scan of their computer which sometimes is a daily setting by default. I normally uninstall it, and they thank me for making their computer faster, and never have any virus issues.

Another thing about the people who go into best buy or similar computer fix services, is that they always get an upselling pitch, to buy an AV when the AV may have been the problem in the first place. But what do they care. the customer will come back for their next problem. After all, to the average person in this day of paranoia marketing, installing an anti-virus seems like its the right thing to do.

I use Vipre. It installs easily, updates without any problem, doesn't slow your computer and doesn't cause it to crash.

I have it on my office server and 11 workstations as well as three computers at home.

It catches everything and I never have problems with it.

And ignore anyone that says that you don't need an antivirus program. You have little to gain and a lot to lose by not having one.

Again, with all due respect, luck, not smarts.

Like he said it can be a well known site. There is a hack out there right now for the very software that this website runs on that allows people to post images in a post that load javascript when your browser loads it. You are lucky that someone hasn't done that. Not smart because you don't protect yourself.

So how do you visit demos of WSOs? Wordpress themes? You don't click on ANY links from WarriorForum?? Do you read any blogs?

Because if you do, there are just so many ways that you can be infected. Beyond what I said about re-registered expired domains that still have links to them on WF. A hacked site can look COMPLETELY normal but have malicious javascript loading in the footer.

Ok I'll ask one more simple question and leave it alone... If you don't have any anti-virus installed you don't have any way to scan your computer. How do you know you don't have a rootkit on your machine right now stealing all your data?

No - I don't click on random links through the WF - even for demo's. I don't buy themes, I generally get em made.

There really isn't so many ways you can be infected. It's really quite simple, as I posted what I don;t do above and have stayed safe.

Unless the sites are my own or ESPN.com , new sites and a few others - I don't feel at the slightest bit at risk..

Yet the people that think they can download what they please from warez sites and expect their AV to catch all will be in for a rude awakening.

Its a well known fact that an internet connection for more than 30mins with or without web browsers or other internet application opened is enough to put anyone at risk.

This is only true when the PC is connected directly to the Internet with no hardware router in between.

/me still virus and antivirus free.

This can and does indeed happen, "my man". Your strategy is flawed.

What do you do? Never visit a new site? How do you ascertain the reputation of a site you have never visited before? There is a big grey area and you risk attack if you don't check the source of every single script executed when you visit a site for the first time.
Yes, my strategy is flawed yet people that use AV programs tend to always seem to get viruses while I do not. Very flawed indeed, I'll make sure to giggle the next story I read about someone needs to reformat their machine because they thought there AV program wouldn't allow a virus on it while I continue to enjoy my computer virus free - without taking a huge performance hit.

Ah I remember my assistant had Kaspersky installed. What a nightmare that was, couldn't even install quickbooks with Kaspersky running. The trouble she went through to install a simple program and all because of an AV program.

I'm with Matthew. I never had any viruses when I wasn't running anti-virus and anti-malware software. I tempted fate one day though... first scan and I now had hundreds of infected files!

Luckily I stopped the scan and uninstalled in-time and I never saw a virus again.

              Agree.
But I want to add some more points:

              - There are very few malicious viruses now, but there is more spyware. People develop spyware to profit from it in one way or another, so they are not interested in revealing them. Most of them work silently on your computer for years and not you, not your antivirus program do not know about them.

-nowadays ISPs filter most of the viruses.

              - If I want something suspicious to download I check websites Alexa rank, if it is less than 10,000 very unlikely to catch viruses

Running as an unprivileged user and using my brain before clicking has kept my computer safe as well for many years. It's not hard, the most important part is using your brain.

I'm a power user, and average 30 hours or more of screen time per week(more before the last two babies were born). It's not luck.

My wife also has not had any issues with her PC since we've been married(10 years this June). I explained to her that it's avoidable and to think or ask before she clicks.

you can use no antivirus at all if you have good email provider like gmail and don't do the following stuff from your computer:
    -enter porn sites
    -enter hacker sites
    -enter game sites
    -install hacked programs
    -download freebies

However if you have paid membership in respected porn, game, nzb, hacker etc. sites you can do it without worrying

No other way for the virus to enter.

Another good browser setting tip is to set flash to 'click to play' as flash is a common attack vector.

I don't have Java installed, or Adobe's PDF reader as these too aren't worth the hassle with their vulnerabilities. When you really need them, just install the very last version at that point in time and then deactivate after. Saves a lot of potential trouble.

I'm also pretty careful about browser extensions as these too can be easily be abused.

I don't have an antivirus installed, I'd rather have a computer virus than use something like Norton, they are much more annoying. If you browse and download wisely you will minimize the danger and when it's really stealthy the AV program probably wouldn't have stopped it in the first place. Windows 7 is pretty darn good, I literally can't remember the last virus troubles I've had, nothing since Windows 7 for me. If I have a file I don't trust, but must open, I use virtualpc (which is also great for browser compatibility testing).

I'm actually more concerned about my android phone's security than my pc. Most apps have far too many privileges, not to mention built in vulnerabilities.

From my experience when you mix an antivirus with malware program the result is a crash.
Usually the malware program is the guilty one. This stuff is made for the extremely suspicious and is supposed that you have know and accept to deal with poping messages, confirming constantly and complicated stuff.
I use also Windows security Essentials. Thumbs up for the virtual machine! In fact I have a PC i use only for work, tablet for the chitchat and laptop for my wife so she doesnt touch my PC. On top of it i have 2 same operating systems W7 in a case of crash.

IMO, an antivirus program isn't needed, they are resource hogs at times.

I rarely get viruses, Im pretty aware of what I'm installing on my computer. But as far as any security goes:

I like Comodo free firewall. Firewall Download, Windows 7 Firewall Security, Firewall Protection for Windows 7

ccleaner to delete cookies, temp files, dead registry data, etc.. I run that program daily

I run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware every couple weeks just to be sure that I'm running clean. I don't use the full version so its not running at all times. I use the free version and scan as needed.

      Hi,

After getting my PC hijacked some time ago, I disabled all MS related security.

I opted for Prevx on my LapTop and Webroot for 3 other PCs used by my staff.

Both anti-viruses are very fast, very light, very small footprint and doesn't hog resources at all.

On top of that, I have Malwarebytes Full Version and Trojan Remover Full Version.

They are working well with each other and very fast, a full circle 3D protection.

      So far, so good.

      In my experience,

      1) Use a paid version of a good anti-virus s/w like Norton/ Kaspersky etc. These labs always keep themselves updated with the latest threats on a daily basis; meaning they take their business seriously.

      2) I said "paid version". Thats bcos, usually the free version is offered to you to experience the good features of the s/w and prompt you buy the full version with complete protection. Buy the paid version and protect yourself completely. If you weigh the risks vs benefits, I believe even the most popular anti-virus s/w is worth the price.

      3) Never run 2 anti-virus/ firewall programs. They always conflict with each other. For instance, switch off "Windows defender" if you are using a powerful Anti-virus program. You can check this- for instance if you are using Windows 7, go to Action Center under Security Settings, it will report all the conflicting Anti-virus, firewall and Malware programs and warn you to fix it. Fix it!!
(Usually, the installed Paid full protection Anti-virus will take-over the default one that comes with the OS, which is good).

      4) There are tools like Windows Malware Removal Tool that can be "Run on demand" and that will not clash with the existing Anti-virus program. Similarly MalwareBytes can also be Run on Demand but should not be set to run on the background if you are already having another AV protecting your PC.

      5) For sure use, CCleaner.

      6) Use Private Browsing. Its called "Private Browsing" in Firefox, and "Incognito window" in Chrome. Doing so, when you close the browser it will clear the cache, cookies, history etc., even if you forget to use Cleaner.

      7) Delete some files that are stored needlessly in Temp files.
      Go to Start =>Run => type %TEMP%
      Select everything and delete.
(All unwated files will in the folder will be deleted). Try that Now.

      My 2 cents.

P.S. Having said this, can some keylogger/ malware/ spyware/ some malicious application can creep in despite having the "most powerful" anti-virus s/w? Yes, its possible. Not bcos you have done something irresponsible but someone is smart enough to sneak into your system.

When I hear some friends here are not using any protection at all, its like playing a dangerous sports without wearing any protective gear. Better be careful than sorry. (No offense intended).

I use the free version of both AVG and Malwarebytes. On my old computer, I used to keep an installation file of Avast around if those two weren't able to handle the problem. So I'd just switch programs and hopefully that would work (which did work most of the time). I haven't needed to do that since switching to Windows 7 though.

i too don't use any programs to prevent malicious stuff. I have been running that way for many years. I won't claim i don't get viruses, but I run everything from cloud based systems. Some public systems and some my own private cloud apps.

When i do get something on the cpu, I just re-install windows. I don't even mess with them, i just reformat and re-install windows. There is absolutely nothing on my computer itself that is not on other places in the cloud.

but honestly, others are right. the vast majority of times that i have gotten a virus, i was clicking links or visiting very high risk sites. Your brain alone can keep you away from most of this stuff.

In my experience the programs designed to keep viruses and stuff off my computer often times prove to be almost as much of a headache to deal with as a virus itself.

It will save you a lot of time if you Restore your System State from earlier date instead of reinstalling the whole thing.

yes, i do that sometimes, but honestly the cpu runs so much smoother with a clean install every so often anyway. Besides my girlfriend can usually find something she thinks i should be doing anyway for the hour or two it takes to do a full clean install.

PC security is important to me, so I use a multi-layered approach:

    -Windows 7 limited user
    -Windows UAC
-Windows Firewall (controlled with a 3rd party app)
    -Microsoft EMET
-Avast (only the essential modules installed)
    -Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware (manual scans)
    -SpywareBlaster
-Firefox (with NoScript & Web of Trust)

It may seem complicated, but it's not, and my PC runs fast. I haven't had a virus or malware in years, so I must be doing something right.

Kaspersky is pretty slick IMHO. I think Norton is personally over-rated, or maybe I just don't like it due to the margin that is made in it. (ex-PC World employee)

Avast is also good. Either way as long as you avoid dodgy websites, spammy emails and crappy downloads...you should be fine...providing you got some sort of anti-virus.

    ^^ All reasonably good.

I here that a virtual machine is the way to go, then if there is a problem you can just format it and start with a clean slate, as it keeps all the important files on your HD completely separate.

The problem I perceive with AV software is that it becomes a challenge for the pro hacks to get around them, just because they want to gain kudos in the hacking fraternity, it is a great shame they fail to realize their talents could make them a great deal of money legitimately, without causing distress to others.

I have been using Avast Antivirus for 5 years and am very happy with it. I have not been infected by any virus ever since I switch to Avast. If you are on a tight budget, you can try their free version which can track down most of the spyware and viruses. One thing I like about Avast is that the downloaded file is small compared to other antivirus software so the speed of your computer does not slow down too much when the program is running at the background.

This robust software suite comes with a PC Tuneup utility that also works amazingly well but you'll have to download that separately. I intend on using Zone Alarm products forever since they are always on top of things and are continuously coming out with improvements and updates. still only using Comodo free firewall, and have no problems at all. Occasionally I'll run a mailwarebytes (free version) scan.

IMO, anti virus programs are resource hogs, and unnecessary. They have clever marketing campaigns though.

Gmail helps keep less spam coming into my inbox, and I rarely open any emails unless the source is known. Also gmail disallows images by default, that is one way your computer can be infected, through emailed imaged.

Chrome browser with Ad Block Plus extension(free) help in the browsing department. I rarely ever see a popup, and never any adsense or other PPC ads . You can manually add ad's to block them also. ex: header ads on forums.

Problem is, people think that viruses are so so bad. All viruses really do is give you a pop-up, advertisements etc.. so that the person who infected you make a little cents off of you. but he does this to a lot of people.

    These viruses are detected mostly.

Then there's the annoying viruses, worms etc.. they mess with your system, they won't allow you to enter your computer or task manager and will claim your computer is infected and you have to call a number, or claims you have infringed copyrights by downloading torrents and you have to pay $200 or so.

Now going to the really terrible viruses these are the ones that are not detected, they are encrypted by tools that was made by experienced hackers and are updated at all times. These viruses will keylog you, the person can control your computer and anything he wants with it, without you knowing (e.g install a program, a bitcoin miner, you won't even know!) you can become a "zombie" basically apart of a botnet and you will help make DDOS attacks, and again.. you will NEVER know!

The really bad viruses.. you will most likely never come in contact with them since it requires someone who accepts everything, opens everything to get infected by such, and most of the time the hacker who distribute these are targetting companies or individuals.

TL;DR: Viruses are really not that bad, and you shouldn't worry too much, get two-step verification on your emails, and have AT LEAST 2 passwords, 1 password for your emails, 1 password for your bank/serious stuff. Goodluck

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free, uses no CPU, has what I need, doesn't block things that I don't want blocked (oh ever used a program and bam it was detected or installed a game?)
