How to dig deeper to understand customer need using a keyword search knowledge

I am investigating a niche market that gets a high number of local searches per month, and I want to know more details about why these individuals are searching out the term. How can I figure this out quickly and cheaply?
For example, let's say my keyword search is California badminton. And (hypothetically) there are tens of thousands of people searching per month (according to Google Keyword Tool). I want to know more specifically why these individuals are searching out this term. Are they looking for where to buy equipment? Are they looking for lessons? Are they looking for games?
My best idea was to create a beta website that is to be all about the niche topic. On the homepage, I would ask people to sign up. In the form, they enter name, email, and are prompted to tell me what their needs are/ what they are hoping to find on my website.
Is there a better or easier way? Suggestions?
