hello I was wondering if anyone hosted their own emailing lists with a dedi or vps server and software they paid for instead of using services like mailchimp or aweber.

I use self-hosted autoresponder software for many of
    my lists.

I use ActiveCampaign and it allows me to either send
e-mail via my VPS server or I can also send e-mail via
external SMTP servers like smtp.com, etc.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

    Shaun

Thanks, kerio looks very complicated. In fact the mailserver software itself looks complicated. I know absolutely nothing about this kind of software. But it looks like a skill/knowledge well worth acquiring. As i was reading this thread, the word "open source" popped into my head and i started looking up "open source mail server" and found several. at least half of the companies had a freemium model. I will definitely look at the free open source software, get a little hosting and play with it, get a hang of it. not right now, though. I am focused on mobile and web sites. Right now, learn how it all works is the most important thing. Learn a little bit at a time. Maybe hire someone to set it up initially and learn to maintain it.
Is there a book or WSO or this, I wonder.
I had read on article on how mailchimp has banned a lot of stuff. I am not planning on being a spammer, but I dont like the thought of a service having that much power over my me projects.

I haven't done this yet. However, I'm glad for some of the referrals mentioned above. I heard that having your own e-mail server gives you more freedom.

what "freedom" do you think you need that a hosted service does not give you? How much time/money do you have to spend? doing self hosted properly is very expensive!
