How big is your list?

It's not really a numbers game if you know how to market right...I made consistent money with a tiny list of 23 people many years ago. So size doesn't matter.

I've said this many times.......I wish mine was bigger. lol But a lot of people say that you can average about $1 per person on your list per month. So with that logic if you have 1000 people on your list, you can expect about $1000 per month.

What I can say that don't worry about list at all, start building list and start your follow up email, try it, get some number rolling in your autoresponder than see how your list is behaving.. it is not numbers game is testing games.. once you test than you can say it is number game..I hope it helps..

My list is not as big as other gurus but they are my friends and they usually buy when I make recommendations about a product.

Lists, lists, lists, hmmm, this is my take on lists.

there are lists and there are lists. A list of hundred and thousands and thousands of names, is worthless unless they are a list of buyers! Lists like that cost you money. I have read "I have a list of over 500,000 subscribers", - SO WHAT?? If you email them and they do not open your emails, you send them offers and they don't respond.

People on lists, change their emails addresses, like they change their sox!

You need to cull your lists all the time.

Ideal list, ones that open your emails (you can track that rate), those that buy, you can also track that.

I would rather have a list of 1000 buyers than a 50,000 names that are useless.

That is what I think of lists, but that is just me and others will howl me down, but..

This is 100% correct. I heard of a handful of e-book gurus have 1,000s of people on their lists thanks to a few JVs and are scraping by to make a living (and it's no small feat to get a list like that). Having an email address is a nice step, but what matters most is what kind of value you deliver and what people think of you and your products.

My blogs are pretty popular, I've been going at it for over 2 years, and I have : 3,560 on my list. That's a great number for my sort of business, aweful for an ebook marketer.

A lot of people think of lists in terms of raw numbers: like "i'll put up a landing page and when I get 500 people opt-ed in, I'll send them x offer and I'll make y amount of money... then I'll have a biz" kinda thing. I think that's a poor approach for a bunch of reasons, one of the main one's is that those offers often aren't that sustainable because your list will suffer offer fatigue. If it's your first time out of the gate, I'd highly suggest something worth a continuity membership.

But the broader point is that list is just one representation of something that matters even more: relationship.

100 trusting readers on a "Dominica Passport" list likely has a bigger market value than 50K on a 'SEO rank niche sites' list.

500 trusting readers on an 'expat tax advice' list is likely more valuable than that list as well.

So 'list' is just one arm of relationship, before you can decide how much to invest in your list building efforts, define how valuable the underlying relationships are to you and your business.

Agreed, big list doesn't mean anything to you if they cannot bring you money..
Most important is how to have a very responsive lists, one email you send, then it will bring you tonnes of cash....
Many people have the skills to grow big lists, but less people teach on how to make responsive list.. hmmm great idea for WSO... hehe

My first 2 sales came from 48 list, so there is no exact "one size fits all". It depends on how you treat your list, their response, targeted or not, and their buying power. Just give first and you will receive [sales]

When i had started business when i have no list but as it grew up list start making bigger...so if you are selling any product or your service that you can do without any list..yes but if you already have clients then it's obviously gives you more benefit.

I think conversion rate is far more important.

What's better?

a) A list of 100 that converts at 100%
b) A list of 5000 that converts at 1%

Asking how big the list is, is the WRONG question.

You're better off asking on how RESPONSIVE the list
is.

Fact: The responsiveness of a list tends to decrease
as the list gets bigger.

Here's some research data from 105,922 e-mail campaigns
via AWeber:

Therefore, I prefer to build a series of smaller lists that
are more focused on specific subject areas - and are
more responsive too.

Some things in life are best 'big'.

But as far as an email list is concerned then responsiveness counts.

Why would a list of 500 subscribers, that were delivered 100 emails will have, let's say, 60% open rate, but a list of 10,000 subscribers that were sent the exact same emails, in the exact same order, at the exact same intervals, will have a smaller open rate?

Of course, we consider that nothing else has changed either (the traffic source, the copy for the sign-up, the website design, etc).

I agree that it seems a surprising result that list responsiveness
tends to decrease as the list size goes up.

After all, it's not like the subscribers necessarily know what
the actual list size is!

However, as the list gets bigger, the list owner tends to
write with less focus, so some subscribers see the content
as being less relevant and therefore their responsiveness
decreases.

Also, smaller lists tend to have newer subscribers who are
more engaged with the e-mails. As a list grows, it tends to
accumulate more aged - and less responsive - subscribers.

This is why I like to have many smaller, segmented lists
that are tightly focused around specific subject areas
rather than having one big and unfocused list.

Depends how you aquire list..is it freebie seekers, which is ok but are you providing value to them, thus getting them to be responsive? Are you getting this list from freebie seekers over to informed buyers?

Building a relationship of trust and friendship with your list will be the key...a list of buyers is what you want so obvioulsy the bigger the list of responsive buyers the better.

Interact with your list
Build relationships
Provide Real Value
Learn from your list

The quality of your list is more important than the quantity. The more you have on your list the more you pay to your autoresponder, so its not good having a large list where no body responds to you.

relationships come first with your list.

One of my clients has 900 people on his list but makes a full time income, cause he emails, and looks after them. One email sent can make him 10k...so the proof is in the pudding.

All the above is true - not the size but the responsiveness etc etc

I think list building is the great because you have an assest that is continuously building. An assest you can personally look after - rather than a site that can be slapped by google

But thats just me personal view
