I have a domain called s h i t thatsfunny.com, I was thinking it would be a good idea to hire someone for 200$ to make a ultra simple version of reddit.com for this site. The main purpose of this site would be for people to submit links to funny things theyve found.

My question is if this is a business venture that would be worth going into? If I got to the point were I made 5$ a day ( from ads ) Id be VERY pleased.

Also any tips or even people bidding on developing the site for me would be welcome also.

No. And it's not even funny.

Since your keywords are not sought after you will need to do heavy promoting or SEO domination but my question is, where would your content come from?.

But it doesn't hurt to try.

The whole point is to have other people submit content to my site for me, to make a site like reddit.com.

its really a good idea as far as you are able to drag initial traffic to get people involved and align anything which can help people to spread your site viral.

The main concept is..it doesn't matter what you do but if you are able to engage people in it who have same interest then you can make big money out of it.

in starting you will not work for money but as people join you and you have some recognition then money will start flowing in.

and one more thing, before going to execute it..just think for at least 2 different traffic sources and make your plan to promote it..if you had this homework done then you are ready to go..otherwise you might lost few buck and end up with nothing.

        Hope it helps.

This kind of stuff does very well when you can pick up something viral and stick it on Facebook with a lot of people following you. Currently implementing a similar idea, and much of the traffic comes from social nets.

If you don't give it a shot, you'll never know what could have happened.

The toughest hurdle you'll have to jump will be the lack of visitors/contributors the first few months. You'll find you will have to contribute 99% of the content yourself until your website builds up a bit.

Set up a Facebook page and link to all of your new content. Then hope it catches gets a few subscribers and direct them to your website.

Give it a crack. There's no harm in trying.

    Good luck.

Sounds like the start of a good business plan.

Not a foundation to set your entire business on, but definitely a great side project which will have the potential of $5 per day in advertising for sure.

Facebook, and Viral Marketing - Eat and breath these phrases while you develop this site, this will be the most effective way to market your idea.

    Good luck with it.

One problem: "Naughty word filters" will nuke a lot of emails containing that domain name. Not all, but enough to be a nuisance.

It is low investment and you'll learn a lot along the way, so give it a shot! Like the other posters say, traffic is the challenge as you'll likely be struggling for months spending time posting content yourself. Then one day one drunk tweet by a celebrity and you'll get some short term pop.

I'm doing a project like this so have researched the main Reddit / Digg Clones like Drigg, Pligg and Hotaru. Several hosting companies have one-click installs for these, so try them out yourself.
