Want a better reposonse from you list?

Hi Folks

You've probably been told before that you should try and speak to your list as a friend would. Some people send an email out and talk to them as a group. Don't forget, the idea is each person should feel like you are emailing them as an individual.

Ok, so, some people get this. And I thought I did too, but when I try and send an email thinking I am sending them an email as a friend, it still comes out sounding a bit stiff, and not really the same as if I was sending it to a friend, so I had this idea which I tried and worked almost too good....

I went into my sent items and found an email I sent recently to one of my best friends, and then copied and pasted that into my aweber message (as a broadcast).

Then, I simply changed things here and there to make it relevant to the topic, and replaced the name with 'mate', you can also use "Hi there", or use the {first_name} thing or whatever, but anyway, I got so many replies, I had to spend the entire night (until 1:30am) replying to them. I could tell from their replies that they felt I was just emailing them as an individual. Some people also came back with questions, and some with links to youtube videos and all sorts.

Anyway, thought I would share that.

    Nice idea - maybe time consuming for those who have too many subscribers and if all ended up becoming too responsive. But I do believe in the fact that it is best to engage your subscribers in order to make the most of them. And off course engage whilst providing value - that's the key

    Hi Phil,

    Yes, it's key that you keep the conversation 1-1 in email. Take some inspiration from radio where good jocks know that you have to sound like you're talking to your best friend accross the kitchen table.

    In my experience it is far more effective online to write without using plurals or as I call it, "the royal we."

    Relating to your audience takes effort and thought. However, it's worth it! If you need to, place a stuffed animal or a photo of a loved one or friend in front of you when you write and use that to keep you focused on having a converstation rather than using a megaphone.

      Yeah, 'We' can work sometimes when people want to sound more like a company, but with relationship building (by email) it can have the opposite effect.

    Definitely a nice idea. It's always the same for everyone, does not it? When someone will treat you personally, you will feel that you are important to him and you should response to him. But, overuse of this trick may spoil it's appeal to target group, like when people find that many people are approaching in similar way, the response amount may go lower.

      The list was a mixture of freebies and buyers in the guitar niche. In this case I wad sending them a youtube video as part of relationship building, so no money made as that wasn't the point. However, they have bought plenty times when I send promos out.

    Treat them as your close friends. Maybe you can Share with them your thoughts after you have watched the MIB2 and ask what do they think.. Relate your conversation to your product that you are selling

      That's right, it's all about getting a conversation going. Then it becomes really easy to ask them what they want to know more about, around which you can create posts or products.

    Yeah it is easy to forget that we are talking to an individual audience at the end of the day even if we have lists well into the thousands.

    I agree. One on one marketing (even if you have 1000s of subscribers) is very effective and you will soon draw out active subscribers that will want to participate in everything you do. At the end of the day 100 active subscribers it worth 10000 sleepy ones

    Thanks for the share Phil and I totally agree with you on this. You get such a better response from your lists when you treat your list as though you've known them for years.

    People really appreciate being treated like that. I know I certainly do!

    Relationship Marketing is the way to go if you ever want positive results. I teach this to my students all the time and I actually am guilty of over-stressing it but it's important if you want to see results.

    Thanks again for this share as it really does need to be "put out there" more often than it is.

      Nice post, you are correct you should treat your list as people not just a list of names. They are personal to you they are not just a resource for finances but a resoursce for interaction and learning.

      The more real you are the more trust you build and the more real they feel you are, not just someone stuffing them with offers every day. You never know someone on that list may become a good friend or your next JV or top affliate.
