WHY TWITTER AIN'T A BETTER TRAFFIC TECHNIQUE

Hi,
I read this post from Seth Godin and really liked it as it makes a lot of sense to most marketers especially newbies on using twitter as a targeted traffic technique. Here it goes:

"TITLE: Ranking for signal to noise ratio

A whisper in a quiet room is all you need. There's so little noise, so few distractions, that the energy of the whisper is enough to make a dent.

On the other hand, it's basically impossible to have a conversation (at any volume) in a nightclub.

Signal to noise ratio is a measurement of the relationship between the stuff you want to hear and the stuff you don't. And here's the thing: Twitter and email and Facebook all have a bad ratio, and it's getting worse.

The clickthrough rates on tweets is getting closer and closer to zero. Not because there aren't links worth clicking on, but because there's so much junk you don't have the attention or time to sort it all out.

Spam (and worse, spamlike messages from organizations and people that ought to treasure your attention and permission) are turning a medium (email) that used to be incredibly rich into one that's becoming very noisy as well.

And you really can't do much to fix these media and still use them the way you're used to using them.

The alternative, which is well worth it, is to find new channels you can trust. An RSS feed with only bloggers who respect your time. Relentless editing of who you follow and who you listen to and what gets on the top of the pile.

Until you remove the noise, you're going to miss a lot of signal."

Wow! what a food for thought!

It can't be more 'true' than this. So in other words we are actually marketing through the noise!

    Enjoyed reading. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers!

hahaha, In actual sense, yes, we are marketing to the noise, It's no wonder many don't get good results with it, I myself haven't made anything out of it!!!

It'll be interesting to see what others (who have had success with Twitter) have to say about this. I know Seth is highly regarded but those who have had succcess with Twitter may have a different point of view

I'm more curious about the huge number of this article's copies. Is this PLR?

      Nah...

There are just a huge number of Seth Godin acolytes who republish anything he says because he says it.

I'm not saying that this particular piece is good or bad, just that anything Seth writes gets syndicated all over the web.

It's not about syndicating what Seth writes, It's just for some time I have been trying to use such traffic techniques without getting anything useful out of it, despite buying products that claim being successful using such traffic techniques.

So it's not about just what he wrote, to me It's about what he shared that was in conjunction with my experience in IM, which I am sure to most in here who have used such techniques, have mostly experienced such results!!!

Looks like this old guy needs a nap, since it appears I'm not communicating clearly. This is the second thread I've had to explain myself.

ejoka, I was not aiming my comments at you. I was aiming them at JO, who was asking why he found such a large number of copies online. You and I are fine, and I'm looking forward to seeing what people who use Twitter successfully have to say.

I'm sorry ejoka -- this distraction was my fault. I shouldn't have commented.

While his message is slightly cryptic, I'd say it's true. Much of social media takes a deft touch to get any results, imo.

If you have a good product, than Twitter is a relatively cheap and non time-consuming way of keeping people engaged and spreading the word. It costs little and can produce a lot of buzz. It definitely shouldn't be you main marketing strategy, but why ignore it?

It's really hard to get that kind of 'Buzz' you are talking about, these days its like just people want to tweet whatever comes in mind, and lots of marketers are trying to get their piece of the pie around it, makes it a difficult place for an honest marketer to really make it, Unless you give it time and establish yourself as an authority in your niche then at least that little buzz will kick in, but otherwise it's a place that everyone thinks of just getting his/her message with no intention of paying any attention to what you have to say, and why should I really???

Yeah, Twitter is becoming more and more garbage and it's harder to get the traffic you want.

I don't agree with Facebook though. The key in Fb is to not sell anything directly. Think about yourself. When have you ever bought anything through Facebook Ads?

The best thing to do with them is to collect quality Leads for big niches or else CPA offers are your best bet.

Precisely the reason NOT to invest in fb.

I love your quote "when have every bought ANYTHING through fb ads?"

And considering that is their only source of income....scary for them

At least with Facebook there is an option to choose people you want to get, and with CPA offers you can simply get offers that don't need people to actually buy something, which is something most facebook users want!!!

  • I have always thought twitter was lame. It is like a spam machine. But I have had success with it. Twitter can bring you instant traffic and sales.
