Host Gator questions?

So I have a few questions about hosting on host gator. Right now I currently have one site hosted under the second hosting plan, its called baby i think. Under it lists unlimited domains. Does this mean I can host multiple websites under the same plan and if so is this going to cause any problems.

Secondly, I was wondering about the cheapest plan. It says one domain, not does that mean I cant have any subdomains under my main one?

If I'm planning on making several different niche sites whats going to be the best way to host my sites without hurting my wallet too much?

    Yep.

If you use the Baby plan, you can set up
unlimited domain names, which you can
get from registrars like godaddy or
    namecheap.

Subdomains are all under the same
domain, so you can create it under
    "Subdomains" in your hostgator cpanel.

    Hope that helps.

Winston has it right, as far as I understand the plans. I have been very happy with HostGator's customer service, as well.

Just an FYI, I register my domain names with DynaDot. If you ever want to sell your website(s), their transfer process is very simple and fast.

Like the rest has mentioned go with the baby plan

As for domain names though I HIGHLY recommend namecheap.com I personally would not recommend godaddy ( too many upsells)

Go with the Baby plan, not the hatchling.

With baby, just means you can pay $9.99 a month and have 1,000 websites (all 1,000 sites will share the same resources.. but wont be an issue until you get high traffic..and at that point you should have enough money to be able to afford a dedicated server.

I run a few sites on the baby plan - set up is easy, and there support is great. I would recommend them for cost effective hosting

HostGator sucks. They are very fast to disable an account before you are able to fix the issue. If your database uses too much utilization of the CPU or RAM, they disable the site and cpanel access (as they block the IP from being accessed), so you are unable to resolve the issue. BlueHost is similar. I use a dedicated box. And, if you are serious about running a web business, I think it is a must.

I have several hostgator baby plans and they do work well. Make sure that if the sites are wordpress sites that you set up that you always installing a cacheing tool (eg WP Super Cache) .. they are good for unlimited domains but if any of your sites starts to call on their cpu more than a set amount they will shut your site down until you fix it. This can happen for example if you have a lot of syndicated feeds coming in to your site.

This has happened to me several times and is very frustrating.

Unlimited is not really completely unlimited - but they are a good choice!

Like others, I vouch for HostGator Baby Plan. Their customer support is outstanding, the guys who man this service are just so helpful. I do understand, though, that you need to be mindful of your traffic volume. I have heard several stories of successful WSO launches bringing down their server because of heavy traffic. The solution to this would be a dedicated server or a backup server on another hosting platform.

You can host unlimited domains, but if you are using to much resources, you will get a warning from Hostgator, or they will even close your sites. If you are planing to host multiple sites under the same plan, be sure that your sites are well optimized, so they use less CPU and RAM

Stick with the plan your are currently using, Baby plan. Adding several more sites to your hosting account will be fine so long as you aren't getting tons of traffic too them. As your websites grow over time you might have to figure out if you need to move up to a VPS or dedicated server. But for now I'd say that's major overkill and wasted $$$.

  • You should find baby plan useful. Consider calling Hostgator. They are there 24/7 and have good support.

I don't know why anyone would choose to use add-ons required by the plan to host multiple domains but many prefer it for the cost.

I prefer a reseller account where each domain/site has its own cpanel and I can control the space and bandwidth for all your sites on one account.

If you are hosting three sites, the Baby Plan is only $2.50+ per month which is a deal. If you are hosting 10 sites, a reseller account is easier to manage for the same cost/site.

Subdomains are part of your domain - not additional domains.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

I find it a cost-effective way to host a myriad of low-traffic sites for a very low price.

Addon domains are NOT 'subdomains' - in other words, they can't be reached at the address http://addondomain.maindomain.com. On HG (I don't know about BlueHost, HostMonster, or others as I haven't investigated) an addon domain CAN be reached at the address http://maindomain.com/addondomaindirectory.

That is, unless you put a simple rewrite rule in the htaccess file of the addon domain. In this example, 'maindomain' is the base of the main domain name that your hosting account is set up on, without the extension (.com, .biz, whatever). The 'addondomain.ext' is your addon domain, including the extension, and also including the 'www.' if that's how you want your site accessed. The [L,R=301] means this is the Last rule processed, and the rewrite is a Redirect with status code 301.

        Code:
        <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} maindomain
        RewriteRule . http://addondomain.ext [L,R=301]
        </IfModule>
        OR,
You can put a series of RedirectMatch directives in the htaccess file of your main domain. Either will work, RedirectMatch is faster.

        Code:
        RedirectMatch 301 /addondirectory/(.*) http://addondomain.ext/$1
Either one of the above methods will completely mask the fact that your addon domain actually lives as an addon to a hosting account.

Hostgator Rocks! And if you don't do any blackhat marketing you won't have to worry about your account being shut down. I have used them for years and if I ever have a problem or a question I use their live chat option and they help me right away!

I agree with using Hostgator, I have found it the cheapest and easiest to use and the tutorials show you how to do most of the stuff. The monthly payment for what you get I personally think are superba nd you can have a couple running at the same time to host even more domains. I also use namecheap or 123 in the UK but mainly namecheap.

I run my websites on HostGator Reseller and they are great. Like other people said, if you are not getting a lot of traffic to these sites then you will be okay with the Baby Plan. Now, the reseller account makes it much easier to control.

You just need to be aware with any shared hosting that you may be sat on a box with folks who have none of your own "self-control".

That makes some things (particularly email from the domain) tricky, as the reputation of the site can sometimes be tainted by all those naughty spammers!

Hostgator baby plan is all you will need. Just make sure you keep your initial email they send you for future stuff you will need to do. Things like file transfer protocol or accessing your Cpanel. I use Godaddy for all of my domains.

I too have a hostgator reseller account and have had it for a few years now. It's very handy if you want to build sites and sell them on. As they have their own cpanel, you can make a few bucks on hosting as well.

As others have said, they will shut down a site immediately they discover it is draining resources. But all you have to do is look at what is causing the problem and fix it. They'll then get it running again.

For clarity - I didn't mean to indicate addons were subdomains. Thanks for catching that. I was responding to the OP's question about hosting for "one domain only":

does that mean I cant have any subdomains under my main one?
