Did I Pick a HORRIBLE Domain Name?

Please, be honest with me.

After deciding I wanted to tackle the ever-so-popular "Make Money Online" niche, I semi-impulse bought the domain name without too much thought.

Here it is.

SuccessTerminal.com

The concept behind the name (at the time) was the website being the "terminal" for success. As in, the terminal where you catch a plane, ect.. You get the idea.

Now it's nearly 3 AM and I suddenly don't like the domain as I did earlier. Maybe I'm being irrational due to sleep deprivation, but I want to be sure before I start posting all the content I have prepared.

What are your thoughts? :confused::p

The name is fine, you shouldn't stress on the domain name too much. It could say successfulterminalogy.com and no one would care if the content is great.

    I did this too!

    My site started off as:

    onlinebusinesscraft dot com

and then I did not like that, so:

    prointernetincome.com

    finally its now:

metasmash.net - which has nothing to do with IM, but I really like it and its catchy.

I think success terminal, is ok, but its more important that you are happy with it.

I think it has got a good ring to it! And I totally agree with thester that the content is a lot more important than the domain name. And the more social likes you can get to it the better as well!

I like the name you picked, I feel like it has a faint science fiction reference to it. It definitely is not a domain name I would feel negative about. The thought of an atm comes to mind when I see the word terminal as well so that is even better for your goal.

Alright! Thank you all for your words of encouragement! I feel much better about the domain name now. Looks like I can get down to loading it up with good stuff.

Although I should probably get some sleep first, before I get paranoid for no reason again. :p

    Thanks again!

I think it's fine, not too long, easy to remember, it is even a brandable name as long as you give it a professional look with great content.

I think your domain name is fine. As some of those who posted replies in this thread what is important is the content that you will put on it. The same actually just happened to my site, it was a haphazard decision to get a domain name and I ended up with what I have now (see my sig). But in the end, your success depends on what you will put in it.

IMHO your name passes the branding test. You don't have number or dashes, you have a memorable dictionary domain name.

It can be used for self help site or as an internet marketing help site.

Start loading your site with content and make it valuable by it's work, not by the name.

To me, someone should be able to glance at your domain name and know exactly what your business is about. At least, in the type of business you are going into.

When I read success terminal, I think of a kid in study hall doing homework in a personal booth.

Brainstorm a name where internet marketers will know exactly what your site is about by looking at it one time. I'm not saying your name is TERRIBLE, but why stick with it when you can do better? If you spent 6 hours brainstorming more names, I'm sure you will come up with something better thats not already taken.

Domain is only $9.99... So it's a $9.99 loss.. not the end of the world... And dont worry, they'll be many more losses from here

but the key is not being afraid to learn from them and correct them, which you obviously have no problem doing.

    imsuccesspath
    SUCCESSINIM
    PATHTOIMSUCCESS
    roadtoonlinesuccess
    imsuccesslaunch
    onlinesuccesslaunch

    All .coms .

All more attractive than successterminal, in my humble opinion

Any of these domain names suggested would be a much better option.

Domain name is still important for branding and it is going to stay with you for a long time

That's why it is important to think carefully and choose a good domain name in your long term interest.

Don't worry about the $10 bucks and let it go.

      I bought one the other day - IMSuccessSecret.com - for $0.99.

      All the best.

    Honestly, I don't know.

I think you've done well asking people what they think, and it does seem that nobody hates it, so maybe it's ok?

Since you asked for honesty, I think I'd change it, myself, because "terminal" has some pretty heavy-duty negative connotations in its "other meaning" (like "terminal illnesses"/"terminal care" and so on), doesn't it? But, if nobody else thinks so ...

Stop stressing, it's not a terrible name! Domain names are simply a way for people to remember your site and easily access it. As posters above me have said, the content determines the quality and remember factor of the site. If your site and the contents are of high quality, people will remember your site and the user name.

Second guessing yourself is a time waster - and it's common in IM.

First, get some sleep. A sleep deprived brain isn't functioning well.

Take one more look - and if you like the domain (I see nothing wrong with it) - that's your decision and stick to it. Don't go back in a week and in a month and worry over it again. Just go with it.

If you ask opinions - people will give them. But YOU are the one who assigns meaning to the site by what you put on it.

There are many words in English that have more than one meaning - why avoid them? I immediately thought of "terminal" as "destination" when I read the url.

Thanks guys, a lot of great feedback here.

I've decided to keep the name. And I perfectly understand how "Terminal" may be perceived as negative by some, so I made it specifically clear to my logo designer to focus on portraying the traveling aspect of "terminal."

I'm set on conveying success as a destination, like Kay said. Waiting on the finished logo to see how much of an impact it makes on that.

For now I'll just keep pumping content and playing around with the theme. CSS is totally new to me hehe.

Thanks again for all the constructive feedback!

WHOA!!! Everything in this thread made sense up to this sentence. But this is unquestionably a mistake.

If you incorporate the "traveling" aspect of terminal in your design you are mixing messages.

If your site is about "travel" then include travel as a concept in everything you do including your design.

But if your site is "make money online" then that is the concept for your design, not travel.

Now, there are a lot of ways to incorporate "make money online" into your design. It depends on the public that you are trying to market to and what they would find valuable.

How do you find out what they would consider valuable? Well, you can't just guess, because you will likely guess wrong. You have to ask them.

You need to find out what would represent success in "make money online" to them. Not to you or to anyone else, but to them. And whatever they tell you, that is what you put in your design.

But unless they tell you that success means "travel" to them, travel has no business in the design of your website, no matter what you name it.

It's ok if what you wanted was an easy to remember name. Personally I like to first do a little keyword research to find what people type into google when they are searching for what you have to offer. Then try to buy a domain with those exact keywords in it.

For example... I found there are about 12,500 monthly searches on the key word Start A Photography Business but unfortunately that was already taken so I just added the word "Today" on to it and registered StartAPhotographyBusinessToday.com

Not a great name for branding but having the exact keywords in the name will help with organic search engine traffic.

        Cheers,
        Steve

Thank you very much for that insight.

I though I probably didn't express myself correctly. I'm not really looking to incorporate a travel aspect into the design, I was trying to convey the concept of the site being a "Success Terminal," in which the destination is success.

        Not necessarily traveling, per say.

Although you did give me a great idea, which is to find out what my customers identify success with, and find a way to tie it into the design.

Once I have a few readers it would be a nice topic of conversation.

My personal rules for buying domains:

If it is a niche site and will rely on search traffic - exact match domain .com/net/org

If it is a site with content that will draw return visitors, it needs to be brandable - catchy domain .com/net/org/in/me etc

I've currently been loving .in sites; I think it looks cool (dependant on what sort of website it is) and namecheap are doing them for just 2.50$/year at the moment.

I have in fact decided to move past the domain name stage and build the brand.

There's been plenty of constructive feedback on this thread, and I do appreciate it all.

And even though I have to work with the fact that "Terminal" may have a negative resonance to some, I'm sure they'll get past it once they're on the site. Maybe I'll hire a psychologist to help me with the graphics. :p

After reading a lot of the negative feedback on the word Terminal, I think it can actually work for me.

I even believe embracing the negative side of Terminal could work. Had I gone with TerminalSuccess instead, I'm sure it could have some success with the right approach.

TerminalSuccess.com - Success is the only destination, and there's cure

What are your thoughts on that? That's totally not the direction I'm heading in, but I thought it'd be good to discuss the use of negatively oriented words for positive marketing.

    SuccessTerminal.com

(Note: The site is barely finished yet. Still waiting for the actual logo to be delivered, and a lot more design work needs to be done.)

    What are your thoughts? :confused::p
Nope u didn't. I wish I had thought of that, its very clever.

Did I Pick a HORRIBLE Domain Name?
    Sounds nice to me actually!

The website looks nice, but I know what you mean Terminal has a sinister ring to it e.g. "Terminal illness" rings in my mind.

But nah, don't overthink it - it's a good name; just concentrate your efforts providing consistent, high quality posts and you'll be swimming in pagerank in no time!

I think the name is pretty awesome! Like everyone else says, it's all about the content anyway.

I dont think its a good name. I understand where the experienced folks are saying... "content is king" (that was what I was told just 2 days ago when I had to decide on a domain name)
While intellectually people understand it means the second definition in this context, speaking as a noob the word "terminal" keeps sitting in my gut. It has very negative connotations. It could be a useful name; example, A site about business failures and how to learn from them.

Since you asked for honesty, I think I'd change it, myself, because "terminal" has some pretty heavy-duty negative connotations in its "other meaning" (like "terminal illnesses"/"terminal care" and so on), doesn't it? But, if nobody else thinks so ...
    I think so too.

I do and I don't like it. To be honest as soon as I read the domain name the word "terminal" stuck out for me. Straight away the negative side came across and "terminal illness" popped into my head.

But maybe it's just a select few of us that feel this way, the majority don't seem to of had the same feeling.

So with good content and offering your viewers something of value, you could build a good branded site around this domain.
