Quick question, how many people own photoshop? Whats your graphics editing package of choice and what do you think of it?

Thanks for any input received

I use Photoshop Elements for all my personal and professional work.

Easy to use, and no bloat...

Photoshop, yes. But you can also achieve a lot with a program called the GIMP, which is free software similar to photoshop.

There aren't many programs in the same ballpark as photoshop. It's expensive because it's the best. Tell us what you want to be able to do with your photos, and we can recommend a less expensive program.

          Darren,

Just a thought. Maybe the unprofessional look you have noticed with Gimp output is down to the users, not the tool.

People on a small budget who are starting out are more likely to use Gimp than Photoshop, particularly if they only want simple graphics and are not interested in being designers.

Many "web designers" say they've never seen a "professional web page" that hasn't been handcoded... but 99.9999999% of people can't tell the difference between a hand-coded page and one made on a WYSIWYG program.

Likewise, unless you're trying to persuade graphic designers how great you are, 99.9999999% of people aren't going to know (or care) what program you created a graphic on. If you pointed out that is was created on Photoshop, most will say, "So?" (or, "What's Photoshop?").

Owning Photoshop will not make you a great graphic designer anymore than owning a Porsche will make you a great mechanic. I know, I've owned both for a number of years and still can't produce pretty pictures or make a wonky engine work better.

There are those I consider gifted and I prefer to purchase their services rather than waste time proving I'm only one level above a chimpanzee.

Photoshop for heavy duty graphics manipulation.

            Fireworks for web design.

BTW, that's ADOBE Fireworks now... They didn't kill it because it isn't the same app.

It really depends on what type of work you are doing. For most graphic design related work, including web design, logos, and simple stuff. GIMP is perfect and will suite you well. And its FREE.

If you have the cash to drop. Photoshop is very extensive and will give you advanced features like color correcting, HDR, and a whole slew of other goodies.

I personally USE photoshop on my windows box and really like it. But I also frequently do Gimp work on my linux box.

Download Gimp and try it out, If you dont like it. Get a copy of photoshop.

    Just my two cents.

Darren, you aren't making any sense.

Many programs are used to compose an image, and if you are a good graphics designer, nobody will be able to tell which program(s) you used.

It's the DESIGNER that's the pro or not-pro, NOT the program they use. If you are great with photoshop, use photoshop. Nobody is going to force you to use another program.

I already told you that most people accept that photoshop is the best program. Your original question asked what people use. Now that a few have said GIMP you are like "no, no, GIMP isn't professional". If you didn't want an answer to your question, you shouldn't have asked.

EDIT: For the record, I love photoshop too. But I don't think simply using photoshop makes you a pro, it's what you DO with photoshop that makes you a pro.

LOL, I used to work for a third party technical support provider for Adobe. I supported Photoshop 5 then 5.5 then 6.0 also started with Pagemaker 4.0....and went on to support Indesign 1.0.

Illustrator seems to work better for line art because that is what it is for BUT since photoshop 6 You have been able to make scaleable Vector Graphics....which work just as well, you just have to use them correctly.

As for Gimp versus Photoshop.....Gimp is nowhere as good...ok for non designers I suppose. As for Fireworks wel that would be known as Image Ready in photoshop and its purpose is different than photoshop alltogether but thats a whole other course. You need both IMHO to be a proffesional designer.

to me this software is a career unto itself. I can make it work, but frankly Im a hack.

Im sure there are cooler things that the newer versions do - I have seen a couple items in some tutorial videos ... but PS 5x is plenty powerful for moi' its over my head as it is.

I've used PS as a designer since 4.0 came out..and I'm still a hack There are lots of things you can do with PS6 and above that can't be done with GIMP.

    Darren,

Look at my avatar. I created that in PS7, but it's also something I could have created just as easily with GIMP.

I use Photoshop for professional quality images and photo editing (afterall, it is Photoshop...)

For graphics I use Adobe Illustrator (as its a graphics package) if you are going to hard copy print, you usually need to send an illustrator file as it converts better to curves (pdf) than any photoshop image.

Its dependant entirely on what you're trying to do.

Fireworks is great for web graphics though, although a pain to edit bitmaps... Hope that helps.

I have the latest version of Photoshop and use it almost daily.
I couldn't be without it. It took me a few years to just learn the basics, and I still haven't progressed too far - certainly not to graphic designer level.

But for web purposes, learning Photoshop is quite easy as you'll probably only ever use a small amount of its features.

Photoshop CS4 for web graphics, photo retouching, etc.

Illustrator CS4 for print (posters, t-shirts, business cards, logos, etc.) because scalability/being vector matters. Sometimes I'll do the occasional web logo too.

I also have Autodesk 3DS Max and Cinema 4D installed... depending on the project I'll use it for web and/or print.

To those struggling to make money online with graphics/media packages - go offline and target local businesses. You'd be surprised how many don't have a website, want a new website because their current one is bad, a new logo, nice looking flyers, new business card designs, etc.

I used to use fireworks and still would if it wasn't for photoshop actions (don't know if fw now supports them as adobe bought the macromedia stuff).

The difference between the two is that Fireworks is for web graphics and doesn't include the huge amount of bloat that's in photoshop. It handles vector images and integrates with dreamweaver (newer versions may ofc have changed).

I found fireworks much more intuitive and felt that it included everything I wanted - it was aimed at web designers so that's what it did well. I find photoshop clumsy because it tries to be everything to everybody.

Too funny! I'm well aware that that PS is the industry standard and even mentioned I prefer it myself to GIMP.

Look around though. This is an IM forum. Me nor any IM on here has to worry about CMKY print colour separation!!!!

Newbs on this board are always being talked into paying ridiculous money for things they dont need. When I step in and suggests cheaper or free alternatives its obvious many here are against that.

            Whatever.

I'm still gonna inform people that they dont have to empty their wallets to jump into IM.

Bottom line again. No IM needs to pay hundreds of dollars for PS when they can do the same things with GIMP.

I started using using Photoshop on a Mac Color and haven't found anything else worth using since. It's come a LOOOOOOOOONG way in the past 20 years.

I use a combo of Corel Draw and Photoshop Elements 6.0. I am more comfortable with Corel. I also love the zoom on it, just roll the wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out. Speeds things up a ton. It soes pretty much everything that PS does, but at a lot lower price. It isn't as flashy though. I am still learning how to use both, there are a ton of things that can be done, I do not think I have even came close to figuring out all the that can be done.

Best of luck in your journey. A lot of it depends on what you are wanting to use it for.

I use CS3 every day. It's expensive, and I think most people could accomplish what they want using the Elements version, or even somthing like Corel Photo Paint.

I use Photoshop Elements 5 which is quite decent. It mostly just lacks features such as channels, full curves support and a few other pro features, most of which can be found in the Gimp. Depends on what tools you need. Best to always try the free or cheap stuff first, and then upgrade if you feel the need for something more powerful.

If you're after something strictly for editing photos, there's a great free site I've started using recently- Picnik - edit photos the easy way, online in your browser which lets you colour correct and fix up your photos online. They have some great filters. Not suited to anything that requires text though.

I've been using Photoshop since about 1991, having received an LE copy with a scanner for a Mac. I quickly bought version 1.0 and have been with it ever since on both Mac and PC. Therefore, I'm very comfortable with the software. I'm currently using CS3.

Paint Shop Pro, Gimp and the others are all fine products and in the hands of an artist will produce art and like Photoshop in the hands of a wannabe will produce wannabe results.

Use what works for you and fits your budget.

I have Photoshop Elements 6.0, and I love it. Very easy to use. I been using it for editing my photos, and doing custom graphics for my husband.

I also have Xara webstyle 4, but only use it for light editing of my photos.

    I'd vote for Photoshop.

    Hey Darren,

If you realy want to see some brilliant graphic's try down loading XARA EXSTREAM, you can get a full 30 day trail free.

I have been useing Photo Shop for years but Exstream leaves it standing, for under a $100 it's got to be the best out there in it class, when I say class I mean $1000 plus.

It's easy'ier to use than elements and a 100 times better.

For those who are like me and stick with photoshop (cs3) do a Google and you will come up with any thing you need for photoshop, how to's, header graphic's, ebooks actions, brushes, well any thing you need just put in FREE when searching for what you want.

Warriors it's out there if you look.

I use paint or I outsource to a pro.. Not got time to be playing with photoshop. Really intense learning curve. I can quickly edit and do the basics but that's about it.

I'm sure I could learn as I'm technically minded but it's so cheap to outsource and be working on something else.

Personally I use Photoshop and I love working with it. On the other hand, a friend of mine uses Corel Draw and has been using it ever since it first came out. We both can achieve the same thing using these two different programs. So, I guess it really depends on you and what you're used to.

And I also agree with some people who said that it's not the software, it's the skills you have to use it.

no. I do not think we are just flexing muscle. I think that many people devalie photoshop.

YES - it is true that you need to be a good designer AND have good software
YES - it's a massive learning curve, and you MAY be better off outsourcing to a pro
YES - it is confusing, but highly rewarding
NO - It is not worth slagging off because its too damn good

Photoshop is good, but many times it's overkill. I prefer Fireworks for web graphics just because for me, it's easier to design fast and output optimized. I come from a vector background, so Fireworks allows me to utilize vector drawing tools then ouput as a bitmap like jpg, gif, etc.

I use Gimp and Photoshop CS3. I'm not a graphic designer, so don't use either to their full potential. I find I can do lots with Gimp, by googling for specific tutorials. I am sure graphic designers would find CS3 to be far superior to Gimp, but for me, I am happy using either. The kinds of graphics I create tend to be buttons and headers, so very basic stuff. I've never found Gimp to be wanting, but again, I only use both tools for the simple stuff...

I have been using Photoshop for about 9 years now. I own Fireworks and it is supposed to be optimized to create web graphics whereas Photoshop is optimized for photo work and enhancement.

With that being said, I still have never bothered to learn the Fireworks interface, and Photoshop is how I create my web graphics (along with Illustrator to draw the vector portions.)

I think each tool has its pros and cons and you need the right program to create different graphics.

yes. When adobe bought fireworks (and dreamweaver and flash = macromedia), they were perfectly able to just scrap fireworks. But here's some IM sense. In order to automate EVERYTHING PERFECTLY AND IN THE EASIEST WAY, you need ALL of the programs. You CAN do web with ps, but fw is optimized for it

Well I use CS4 right now, but I've used earlier versions in the past (I do quite a bit of photo-editing)

It's an amazing tool in my opinion, quite powerful. If you don't need that much capability you should consider getting a less expensive photo-editing program.

A couple years ago when I started playing with graphics I started with Fireworks because I had it. It was great and easy to use. Finally got an old version of PS to play with and there is a definite learning curve. Never tried GIMP, only because I had access to Fireworks.

Now I use both Fireworks and PS, depends on what I want to do... quick and dirty, I use Fireworks... more detailed and fussier, I go with PS. They both give great results.

I admit that I am pretty basic when it comes to graphics though not that one day I wouldn't like to be able to get into all the "cool stuff."
