traffic tip: Submit your articles in offline sources!

In speaking with several IM's over the last few days, I have come to believe that many are neglecting a simple, but effective way to get more mileage out of their articles and in turn, get more traffic to their sites.

Submit your articles to local newspapers/publications
I think so many people are conditioned to doing things online that they are completely turning off ALL aspects of offline marketing. I know some on this forum as well are not fans of it, but in the world of marketing, if your results can be multiplied without any (or very little) additional effort, then you have scored!

If you created an article, or someone wrote one for you and you have 100% ownership rights, then use that puppy! There are usually many local publications you can easily submit the piece to. Some publications pay, but for the most part, you just want the added publicity. A good article in a high traffic publication can garner fantastic numbers of visits to your website. Often, the credibility achieved is much higher than that of online sources as well. Here are a few tips to get you started:
  • Source local publications that publish content on your subject matter
  • Contact them and obtain their submission policy
  • Get a pretty picture of yourself (YOUR picture will often accompany the article. It will help readers to connect and feel more comfortable with you, thereby building trust)
  • Submit away!
You don't need to be an on staff writer to get published. These newspapers and magazines NEED CONTENT. Content draws readership, readership attracts the advertisers. Business model sound familiar to any website owners??? Trust me, this is the area I have operated in for over 15 years. You certainly want to see if you have to extend exclusivity, but chances are, the same article you submit to ezine can be submitted to your local "Business Monthly" type publication. MY recommendation is to submit a higher quality content driven article to physical publications, and a slightly less time intensive one online. The offline one has to do a little better job of capturing the attention of the reader for you to get the bang for your buck, or article writing time as the case may be.

Hope this helps some of you out there. I am of the belief that leveraging your efforts and multiplying your results is the key to success. Good luck to all.
