Is Google periodic PR Update a thing of the past ?

I have noticed that some of my sites have shown ( on tool bar ) a sudden change of PR The most noticeable a PR0 is now a PR2 this is a 1 page site which has information about our company.
New sites seem to go to PR0 as soon as they are indexed.

Others have reported similar changes on their sites

Is it possible that the Big update is a thing of the past and that Google are now updating as they crawl ?

Google will always do what they want to do for their benefit, and that of their visitors [and sometimes even advertisers :-) ]. They don't do it for our benefit, that's why relying solely on big G for your marketing is a dangerous strategy. I've seen to many good businesses suddenly die when Google made some change or another.

If you look at your Google webmaster tools in the statistics section, you will see a PR comment for the previous calendar month (Highest PR page in your site).

That indicates the PR update is now done on a previous calendar month basis.

Also, from my experience, a decent site will immediately be given a PR0 upon indexing or N/A rank if it's not decent.

I agree this sole trust on Google is dangerous as they will ultimately do what is in their best interests.
However in most cases if your site is truly decent it will fair well as far as PR is concerned.

People quite often plce too much emphasis on the result they see in the toolbar when to be quite honest that has to be one of the most inaccurate and out of date pieces of information Google dish out. It's been screwed as far as accuracy is concerned for some time now.

I have noticed this as well. One of my sites went from pr 2 to pr 1. Another hasn't increased or decreased... I'm not sure.

I have yet to notice any difference except on the point of new sites getting from unranked to PR 0 (esp for decent sites). Other than that, I think periodic update still seems the way.
