Happy - No Spam Comments

Hi,

I'm very happy today.

A gradual decrease from scores of spam comments to ZERO for the passed 2 days.

Maybe has something to do with the combination of Akismet plugin, the Hosting Server and CloudFlare. The tri-combo could have been deflecting spamming robots attacks efficiently.

I also noticed there were ZERO attempts in accessing non-existent files, which I guess is part of the initial process before spam or hacking attacks.

I like the results. Finally, some peace of mind. Hope it stays that way.

    Good on you!

    One big problem solved. :-)

I might try the tri-combo you mentioned and hopefully have the same results.

      Thanks Loi.

My greatest worry about spam comments are the links in them.

If by accident the spam gets through and shown publicly, the effects could be one of these :
-> SE penalty for linking to irrelevant sites
-> Endangering visitors to malicious sites
-> Endangering visitors to malware code downloads

Spam robots are controlled by insidious people. Nothing good can be expected.

I've used cloudflare but i am not using it anymore. The reason is that it went down too many times therefor bringing my sites down with it.

      Hi,

Sorry to hear that. Hope you will resolve it soon.

We have different experience, though. Never happened to me yet. Not a single day, nor a single hour.

The increased in speed for complete uploads of each page is from 10 seconds to less than 2 seconds without any caching plugin. That is like 500% improvement using the "tri-combo".

So probably, your problem has something to do with the node you're located at or interruptions in your dns system or registrar. Not sure. Just guessing.

My other main concern is security for me and safety for my visitors, which I find them able to deliver - at ZERO COST.

Our network uptime is actually pretty rock solid. What error messages were you getting exactly?

    That would make me unhappy.

I love getting the spam comments. All of my WP installs are set so that I have to approve all comments, so I don't have to worry about them hurting my site, and I have a few tricks that I use with the spammer's site and emails that help me find blogs to post my own comments to for backlinks. Spammer comments are awesome to me.

You're funny and awesome at the same time. Theres no LIKE button in WF yet. I'll use the Thank You button instead.

Well at least, you know what to do with them. An awesome way to exploit them.

I can't cope that kind of risks for myself and my visitors.

I REALLY want that 'like' button here, too. There's so many posts that I don't think deserve a 'thanks,' but a 'like' would be perfect for them.

And funny & awesome at the same time?? If you were a hot, single, red-headed nurse, I'd propose marriage right here and now.

I gotta ask...if you set your WP to where NO comments were posted without your approval, or set it so that a user had to have X # of comments before they were auto-approved (both are Akismet options), where's the risk? I might be thinking too small scale...I don't generally build sites where I want a lot of user interaction. Are you?

lol .... roflmao .. Don't get me wrong. Didn't know that kind of remarks would trigger anything. Its just an admiration at the kind of wit you have, which I'm totally lacking.

Back to the topic. I have not been using WP Comment at all for at least 2 years. I disabled it's comment function. I'm using FaceBook Comment as an alternative. Despite that, WP Comment Spams still slipped in. That ability "to slip in" worries me a bit.

If comments can still slip in, nothing can stop it from being able to leak config info out quietly, if HACKERS can make em intelligent enough to do so. I suspect this would be something they are tinkling right now.

WP is safe for now but some people would always find loop holes to exploit. I'd say, prevention is better than cure.

How is it? You know that you are doing something good when you get spam or you know that you are doing something good when you are not getting any spam (or comments)?

      It is very clear.

Good or bad can only be qualified by the owner of websites based on their personal values, instincts, knowledge, experience and objectives.

      So :
-> Some people have fun exploiting spam comments to their advantage.

-> Some find ways to prevent spam comments because they see it malicious.
