Some questions from a beginner.

On reading up about internet marketing, especially on this forum, I have come across one or two phrases that I don't understand. I think seasoned warriors take it for granted that everybody knows what everything means, not so, as an example I didn't know the meaning of SEO and WSO when I first started out. I do now.

Here are a couple of expressions that I would like clarification on.

"Anchor Text". What exactly is it?

"Bidding on keywords" What is that all about? I thought keywords were free to use. This sounds a bit like an auction to me.

Thanks in advance for any clarification on the above points.

Anchor Text: this clickable text to Wikipedia is an example.

Bidding on Keywords: Tends to be talking about Adwords, where you bid an amount you are willing to pay per click to have your ad shown for said keyword search.

"Anchor text" is the text used to make a hyperlink. So, imagine yours site is about (the infamous) blue widgets. If you leave a link back to your site on another site and hyperlink the words "blue widgets", then blue widgets is your anchor text.

I think "bidding on keywords" probably refers to paid for advertising campaigns. For example in a pay per click campaign you choose which search terms (keywords) will display your adverts.

    Hey,

Don't take this the wrong way, but you can easily get answers
to basic questions like these by searching in Google.

That way you won't even have to wait for somebody to respond
    to your question.

    Take care,
    Dean.

  • Hi East Saxon,
You sound like your getting a little mixed up there lol! I'm a professional search engine marketing producer and its my job to get clients on page on of google for certain keywords. I think your mistaking S.E.O or search engine optimization for google adwords which is running pay per click campaigns where you DO bid on keywords like an auction.

S.E.O is such a massive subject! However, it's really worth the time to find out and learn as much as you can about it. The one thing about S.E.O is that it's not INSTANT traffic and it does take time to achieve good rankings, especially if its a new website.
