You could use Google Keyword Tools to do the research...
Just put your target animal's name, and see the Approximate CPC. If the click is expensive, you know the niche is profitable.

Also, enhance your research with FB ads...
put your target animal's name to the interest box when creating the campaign. If the audience number is high, you know that you could go for the niche.

If your music site is unique and provides value to the visitor then it should sell. And try not to lose focus.

I am actively involved in many animal sites (mostly fish) and it is highly competitive and or non existant. It can be done if you do it correctly.

I'll give you a couple examples:
in planted tanks I was the sole distributor for a specialized food. I was the only one in North America to have this. But the minimum buy in changed and I had to drop the program. The sales of the #1 shrimp food in the world didn't justify carrying the stock (and the manufacturer refused to drop ship).

Second example: just having an open discussion on the topic and answering the questions can be VERY profitable. Research your affiliate links build it up and answer those questions. Q: what filter should I buy? = I think xxx (insert CJ afiliate link here) would do best for your situation.

There are other ways to sneak shopping links into your site without being overly spammy.

If you're looking for adsence income on a pet niche, again it can be done, but it is much harder than direct sales, Q & A.

I have used affiliate links on other fish forums to make a little $$ on the side. Not full out. In the affiliate business product knowledge is king. You don't want to recommend the incorrect product to the person.
