Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?

I'm looking at building another pc and either put vista 32 bit or 64 bit on it. Can any one with Vista 64 tell me if they have any conflicts with any of the tools that most Im'ers are using. Like xsite, camtasia, LPGen, etc. This will only be a pc for work so not really worried if there are compatibility issues with games.

I would prefer to get Vista 64 partly to be able to add more ram, but additional ram isn't worth the hassle or headache dealing with incompatibility issues. I tried XP 64 a while back and had to dump it, I'm hoping they made some improvements since then.

Thanks for any help you can offer

Why do you need more than 4Gb's of RAM?

There isn't one single Windows application available today that is capable of addressing that much memory...(in the consume-o-sphere)

    Go with the 32bit version...

actually, you can assign photoshop to use more than necessary, higher RAM you assign it, faster the app works.

    LOL

    4GB i have, its nice...but i wont mind 8GB...i know people w/ 32GBof mem.

I worked with Vista 64 for the longest, now i am on Windows 7, both 64 bit.

I was one of the first who got a 64bit CPU when they came out, years ago.

To be honest: There is neither an advantage or a big disadvantage using 64bit - however the 64bit CAN introduce some incompabilities and make things more "complicated" without any real benefit.

64 bit does NOT make things faster, nor provide more colors or anything like that.

By the way i JUST downloaded socialbot and was pissed because it does NOT run on Vista64/Win7...and i know a handful (a few) apps which wont run w/ Vista64, eg. Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 etc..

Otherwise, i think i just run 64bit OS to be "cool"....but have to admit there is really nothing to it and 32bit would probably serve me as well w/ less incompatibilities.

From a purely consumer standpoint, 32 is probably better because of compatibility issues.

I like 64 bit because I have 8 gigs of RAM and it makes a huge difference with video and photo editing.

I bought a new desktop last week and it has Vista 64-bit.

        My laptop is 32-bit Vista.

The only problem I have had is that the 64-bit version has a slightly different directory structure in the "Program Files" directory which causes me a couple of minor hassles when I want to continue some software development at home on my laptop. It's called "Program Files (x86)" and that's where it seems to store 32-bit applications, which in my case is all of them.

Apart from that, I haven't yet noticed much difference.

The PC I bought happened to have 6Gb of RAM. Not sure why if nothing can address it.

        Cheers,

        Neil

Yes 64 bit is nice for video editing BUT I've noticed mine crashes fairly frequently now and am not happy about that to say the least. If I had to do it over again I'd have spent the money getting a MacBook Pro ...

I am on Vista 64 bit at the moment and it works very good with Photoshop (despite my Creative Suit is 32 bit), Dreamweaver, Fireworks, etc. My PC has 4 GB RAM and a CPU with 4 cores... and the bloody Windows still works slower than me. This pisses me off. I am seriously planning to get an iMac or MacBook Pro...

Hmm, then something else is wrong with your configuration.

I've got 7 Pc's here, the one I'm working on now, has 2x1GB graphic cards with 3 montiors, dual CPU motherboard kicking out just under 8Ghz of power with 32GB of RAM.

My other ones run on a Intel Extreme Dual Core 3.8Ghz processor, with 8GB of RAM, 1GB Graphic Card, runs like a bullet.

If you have a lot of applications installed, on C drive, then yes it will slow it down.

If you have all your applications installed on a different drive, then no, it wont.

Plus if you have a 10,000 RPM Hard Drive, you should run faster than most, ensuring it's using S-ATA drives, and if you want it to run faster, switch to RAID 0 & 1, and create a shadow copy of the drive, which will make it run even faster.

        Thanks for the replies.

It looks like I'll just go with 32 bit. I use my macbook as my main pc with fusion, but it's a little slow when I'm running a lot of tasks at once. So I'm building another pc this week just to run certain software on it.

64 bit is far more secure than 32 bit...

you may want to hold off until windows 7 comes out, supposed to be faster and lighter than the vista versions.

That's a good explanation. I was going to suggest Mac instead, but I also keep some pc's just to just particular applications. I'd suggest 32 bit.

I've also been using Vista 64-bit without a problem for the last year or so.
