Wow, I thought my card was buggy...

Every time I charge gas on my card I get a temporary charge aside from
the gas itself for like $67 or some odd amount.

After a few days it gets taken off my account as if it never existed,
just think it's strange.

Scott - I get the same thing and it's hard to get an explanation for it.

Only happens with gas stations - but also includes purchases (without gas) made in those convenience stores.

If you use a debit card for gas, the card will have a hold put on funds (usually around $60).

Once the actual amount of the purchase has gone through, the hold is cancelled (within a few days).

Hotels do this, too. They put a hold of what the room will cost + 15 to 20% extra. Once the hotel puts the charge for the actual amount through, the pending hold is cancelled.

It is so irritating, but it happens. :rolleyes:

PS - the reason why this is done for debit cards and not credit cards is that a credit card company will pay whatever amount was authorized, even if it is found to go over your limit. They will then go after you for the money.

Debit cards are not like that - if you don't have the funds, they won't pay. Too bad for the merchant.

This is why the "hold" is for more than the actual purcahse for debit cards.

They do this when you pay at the pump. I learned the hard way and it put me in a bind.

When pumping gas w/ debit card ALWAYS go in and prepay instead of paying at the pump to avoid this. They do it w/ credit cards too but it takes the amount off the backend of the limit so unless you're close to maxing it out you won't even know about it and it doesn't show up on the statement.

This same exact thing happen to me once. I went back to the gas station and bitched out the gas attendant (I thought he was scamming me). LOL Whoops I felt bad when I discovered it was actually paypal. It was for around $60 too!

For gas stations, the amount the hold on debit cards is high enough for the state to be able to prosecute so the debt is not a only a "personal dispute" avoiding the station to sue for non-payment.

I think the funniest part was is they argued with him about it like he could have pumped 81 billion dollars in gas at one time in his vehicle. They did finally admit it was a computer glitch.

I do want to say this...I have been with PayPal for years and personally have never had a problem with them but I thought this was hilarious.

I've been using my PayPal debit card to pay for gas for 2-3 years now ... and last month was the FIRST time the extra amount has ever been taken out. And this was at a gas station that I frequent with the card.

Naturally, it was at a time I was in between being paid and I didn't have that extra $60 for them to take out ... I had $20 and paid $10 for gas. I got home and saw that ... had a massive fit and was on the phone with them. They gave me no explanation as to why they were suddenly taking out the extra funds, but they reversed it right away.

im surprised this could even happen as i believe paypal has a daily limit to what you can spend on your card... even if you hook it up to your bank account they are set limits to what your backup funding will provide...

i have been using one since they became available and never had a problem...

only thing i can think of is that the initial hold was placed but somewhere between the gas pump and paypal the $81billion was requested not necessarily paypals fault, probably the letter was sent out automatically too...

i know during the fuel crisis last year some gas stations where putting $100 holds on your debitcard - hence why i moved back to using credit cards or simply pressed credit at the pump

The real lesson here is what a bad deal debit cards are for the consumer.

And why are people surprised Paypal admitted a mistake? Do you really think they would insist to the media that the $81 billion amount was correct?

This has happened with other companies, too, like somebody getting a bill for millions of dollars from the electric company, when they could not possibly have used that much electricity.

He's lucky it was $81 billion. If it had been $81, it would have been harder to argue that it was wrong, since some vehicles can take that much gas at once.

How does that go? Well sir ... see it says here on my screen that you paid for 81 billion dollars worth of gas. Sorry but it seems to me that it is far more likely that you bought the gas rather than this being some sort of mistake :p
