Browse on mobile then buy on PC?

We are told these days that almost two thirds of searches in Google take place on mobile devices. I haven't checked myself, but I can well believe that this is the case.
I know I'm always on my iPhone or iPod while out and about.

With a number of IM products around now telling us to increase our marketing efforts on these devices are decided to do some pretty detailed research since February of this year, and now on June 1 I have just finished the data collection side of the exercise.

While I haven't finished extrapolating all the information yet, there are some very clear pointers and differences between traditional PC browsers and buyers and those that use Android, Blackberry, iPhone, or Windows Mobile devices.

If you want to know the short version of this, then I'll tell you that my findings based on almost 625,000 searches and over 4,700 CPAs or buying actions, is that people browse on mobile devices for all of most products.
The buying habits though are very polarised. Small purchases (those under $10) now seem most frequent on mobiles. For products of over around $10 a time - most consumers still seem to buy while sat at their traditional PC.

The results at the top level show the huge profitability on mobile devices for items under about $10. The corollary of this is the huge aversion to spending much more than this while typing away on your mobile.

So why post this?

It's just a heads up. I don't think there's anything particularly counterintuitive here.
Although I didn't think much about it, these broadbrush results are roughly what I would've expected from the outset, but it's nice to see it spelt out with hard statistics across a decent sample size.

I go back to the point above. If you're looking to sell products under or around $10 then mobile seems very much the way to go.

Doesn't seem to just apply to "mobile specific" products or services either. Many other small applications and even deliverables and media sell extremely well on mobiles at this price point.

I suppose the analysis need to do is to work out what percentage of the overall Internet market this is. If you're selling something worth well over 30 bucks I would probably concentrate still on traditional PC and Mac users. If you're much under its time to take a long hard look at mobile marketing.

One thing. This post is not your traditional Warrior Forum primer that leads to me producing a product and charging you a few bucks for it.
It's just information. There is no end goal other than to pass on the details I'm discovering.

    We should pay more attention to the mobile users and try to monetize them better.

    Regardless of what the stats are, it's clear that the majority of potential customers are going to be accessing the net from alternative devices (that will become mainstream shortly). I personally think it's a second chance for people who missed the boat in the 1990's to get an early start on the mobile market and tablet/handheld markets.

    It's the issue FaceBook is trying to deal with now. You have smaller screens and less of a chance to have your ad seen or voice heard. That's the challenge marketers of all kinds will have to overcome.

    One problem is tracking affiliate commissions. Your affiliate website is accessed through a mobile device. Later, on a PC the merchant you recommended is directly accessed. You just lost a commission.

        Yes - this is the exact trend. I'm on the train home and I - and half the carriage I'm on - are browsing Iphones and androids and what-have-you.

        Never seen anyone buy.

        I get home and THEN I buy - via my PC. And yes - the issue about losing your commission is exactly right. Coupons are good to get around this (Coupons that identify you as the selling affilate, or coupon links that they return to on their PC later in the day)

        I wasn't sure everyone else did the same, but it seems very common.
        I'm pretty certain people who have auto payments set up in their app store buy in the train or wherever, but the big stuff...that's almost exclusively bought when people are at home - happy to get their credit card out or type in their Paypal details in privacy.
