Would you survive without lists?

It seems to me that IM is getting difficult, now more than ever. With

- Google updates crippling many SEO methods(legit and otherwise)
- Youtube account forcing Google+ account
- Google banning adsense accounts for little to no reason
- All the hoops you have to jump through with craigslist
- All the new hoops you have to jump through with facebook(new security crude)
- Flippa increased over the top fees
- All the big corps squandering innovation with their patents collection so the possibility of being sued the second you make any real money is very real
- Economy has sparked many many many new "startups" which have drastically increased competition in all areas
- Many open source devs who have nothing better to do are increasingly releasing free versions of quality services etc...killing markets

So my question is, what's your thoughts on the above, and also without your lists could you guys continue to do IM full time or would you have to go back to a 9 to 5?
#lists #survive
  • You can do it without a list, but you will have to work hard on continuing to make contacts without anything to lean on when your source changes for the worse. It is just so much harder if you are not capturing your leads into a list.

I think so, but a list can help you do more at same time. And without it you can do this by doing more & more hard work.

Well to make some money anywhere on this planet,
    You either need to:

    1-Sell something.
2-Offer some kind of service, which is also selling!

The internet is just a medium in which we market
Our stuff that we need to sell.

So as long as you have something to sell and
Someone to sell to who actually needs what your selling,
You are going to be earning some $$.

You Just chose how you want to do it. Building a list helps with
    The marketing part.

Over 90% of all of my sales are a direct result of marketing to dozens of niche lists; both online and offline. Been doing it the same exact way for over 15 years, and that is not expected to change anytime soon.

I know a lot of people who don't earn money with
a list. Oh, definitely, there are.

    But that's extremely non-lucrative - there are
gaping holes in that business model. It's hardly
self-sustaining, because the results do not
compound. The profits do not escalate.

    The income barriers don't shatter.

    However, if you're not building a list - you're
losing assets. If you asked a random 6-figure
marketer what he/she regrets the most...

One of those things he/she is going to say is:

"I regret not building a list earlier."

I feel the same way in certain markets where
the tough competitors suck up a good portion
    of the market share.

But that's where it gets really fun...

I don't have any list since english is not my native language, I don't have the confidence to build list as I don't know what to offer in exchange or what kind of email I should send to my list. Do I survive? well, yeah, but it takes a lot of hard work and my revenue so far is enough for me.

I don't believe anybody had an email list in 1997, but people still sold stuff. In 1897 they didn't have TV, but people still sold stuff.

True marketers will always find a way to market. The rest will be their employees.

actually, i started building an email list in 1996. by 1997 i had close to 10k people interested in credit card offers on a list. Back then I had to pay a developer to build myself a very crude AR system. ah...good times.

Back to the Op's question. There will always be people with problems and there will will always be people who have solutions to those problems. Connecting the 2 groups is all marketing is. There will always be a need for people who know how to connect those 2 groups of people in literally thousands of niches both big and small.

An email list is currently one of, if not the best way to connect these 2 groups of people currently.

EBR said it best! True marketers WILL find a way to market.

Just because something seems difficult, does not mean it's impossible. Build a fire so large, people will want to run to it to see what is going on. Get creative with your offerings and always remember to never blend in.

None of the things you mentioned has ever been relevant to me at all (apart from the Google updates/changes, which, admittedly, have always been very kind to me by getting the inferior/spammy sites out of my way and enabling me to rank much better - not that I depend much on Google traffic anyway, to be honest - nor would I ever want to :p ).

I would. I'd probably be a vendor instead of an affiliate, possibly a Kindle/similar writer - not sure: I'd have to find something - I'm simply not willing to do a 9 - 5 job: that was why I started this. But it's not easy to imagine why one should be without lists ...

I could because I don't have all my eggs in IM.

I have an outsourcing business for web design

I have product creation and list building

and I have typical affiliate sites.

However building a list is my favorite. As long as you build a strong following with your list you don't have to worry when all the Google changes happen.

If someone doesn't have a list, there is no better time to build one than now.

No matter what niche your in, build a list so you can keep marketing to them beyond the one time sell. When I first started IM my whole goal was to get them to click my ads or buy the product.

I left so much money on the table by doing that. I could have marketed to them over and over again if I got them to opt in.

So to answer your question yes I could. However I don't see the reason to ever worry about that, because as long as list building still works I will continue to market this way.

So, yeah - that's a big no for me.

Seems like a list is a good thing to have but I sometimes get confused about the profitability of them. One guys says $1 per month per subscriber and another says 50 cents.

One guy says he makes $10,000 a month with 1000 subscribers--which is obviously more than $1 per subscriber-- while another makes $10,000 per year off of a 10,000 member list.

Either way I guess having a list is good but in the end some people will always figure out how to make money.

The funny thing is, email marketing courses (in most cases) still have trouble selling... go figure. People know they need a list, but refuse to build one.

Ofcourse I would. The basics of Internet Marketing is not to put all your eggs in a single basket. So build up backup plans that will support you when your list fails or something else happens. If you dont then you are doomed to fail.

There will always be opportunities opening up because people will always have problems that they want a solution to.

If you can provide these people with a ready-made answer to their needs then you will make money. Competition and challenges will always be there but they just make the taste of success that much sweeter when you do get results

I am also frustrated of all of the "rules" on craigslist. For all of the American's that are out of work, thinking to post an ad on craigslist to HELP these folks by offering an opportunity to many in different cities turned out to be a nightmare...and unfortunate as well.

I think that lists are still the best !

You can use other people's lists and leads to get traffic,
but once you do.. you should make it a part of your
online marketing schedule to import your captured leads
    into your autoresponder.

You can continue without a list and do more solo ads
and the likes, but keep adding the ones who respond
to your offer into your autoresponder. These are gold.

I still use 'no list' methods to build my existing list so
I can make it even bigger so it always goes back to
the 'no list' method. There is always room to expand.

So yes it is very realistic to get tons of traffic without
a list.. BUT keep the leads you get from this method
any way you can, or you are leaving money on the table.
