Where can I start in article writing?

Where is a great place to start off writing articles online for money? I searched for posts similar to this and I simply could not find anything even though I am sure there are posts somewhere. I am interested in writing articles and eventually going into copywriting as I develop my skills to a level I am confident. I know there are places like odesk, and elance, I just need to know where is a great place to start. I am not expecting to make a ton money. Any help is greatly appreciated. If you know of a post that would help, a link would be appreciated as well!

I am pretty sure someone is going to tell you fiverr.

I would try Craigslist and oDesk.

Right here in the Warrior Forum, specifically the Warriors For Hire section.

That's where I got my start, and I was able to build a full time business as a result. It's a very active place and growing everyday. If you position yourself correctly (I can give you some advice if you're interested) and deliver quality work, then you'll have great success.

      Best,

I would not suggest Fiverr. For the amount of effort required to write an article, the price is too low. Try some of the article writing sites which hire outside writers. I sometimes have need for new writers but they must be native English speaking.

But plenty of customers don't care, especially if they are not based in the US. If you work for an article writing site, the pay won't be great but it's a good way to start and gain experience.

First, if you searched for similar posts, you didn't look very far because this forum has a ton of info about this subject. Anyway, I recommend building your own website and contacting website owners directly. However, you can also use the warrior for hire section to get started or one of the many job boards. Do a google search for article writing jobs and you will find a ton of places with gigs you can bid on.

Craigslist is okay, odesk sucks, unless you want to work for a dollar an hour (ish). BTW, you are breaking a rule with the way you signed your posts.....wait till you are allowed a signature.

The "Warrior for Hire" section of this forum is a good place. Then you can link to the ad in your signature. You should also set-up your own website or blog.

You should also think about looking for offline work with local businesses. It often pays much better than online jobs.

Colin Palfrey has a good course on Ghostwriting in the WSO section. I took the course myself and it was very helpful in getting my writing business started.

This forum also has a copywriting section that will prove helpful when you're ready to pursue that field.

If you start out on a site like Fiverr be careful not to get trapped into the low paying cycle.

A good quality writer can quickly get burned out if you're not careful.

I still do Fiverr, but mostly only to attract new clients and it is 1 gig for 200 words so I mostly get multiple orders. It still ends up being less than I normally make but I have found quite a few good long term customers there so it works out in the end.

I agree with what the other people said about starting a site right away and start building a list of clients.

    Good Luck!

I would definitely avoid Fiverr as it's extremely saturated with writers and it can be pretty difficult to get noticed.

Here's another angle you may want to consider:

Post writing jobs in forums that are specific to SEO (like Traffic Planet for instance). The folks there are always looking for quality content and if you charge low enough (and can provide some examples of your work) it won't be hard at all to get noticed. If you open up a sales thread there, you have a great chance of getting orders for your offer with a little promotional work.

Obviously, for this approach to work, you need to have a little knowledge of writing content that's search-engine friendly, but most customers will tell you exactly how they want their content written.

      Hope this helps.

We must be thinking of different iWriter websites. Beginners start at less than a penny per word, and on the high end they barely push $.02 per word.

Joe, I agree that the "starting" rate is low, but that's what drives the initial "work" (i.e. business) for new writers. I think the reason iwriter is a good starting point for people is it allows anyone to quickly and easily build a longterm client base of people looking for articles. There is no easier way that's literally guaranteed to bring you clients, than iwriter. And once you become a premium and/or elite writer, the earnings are higher. Beyond that, most "one on one" (i.e. special requests) on iwriter pay more than writing gigs people can drum up on their own.

I know many people that are now working from home, and use iwriter as their sole source of income. I don't say this to attract more writers, because in all honesty, we don't need more writers.

Don't worry about how much money you will earn, just try to give your best but when your happy clients will return back to you, they will happily pay more for your service

I have no dog in the iWriter fight, just pointing out that the prices you were claiming are paid (.02 per word to start and .08 per word at the top end) are not true. Sure, you can possibly find clients who will pay you that offsite; but it is misleading to try to say that this is the norm.

At that price level, you mostly have new business owners who buy a ton of content on the cheap, make nothing off of that content (through their own fault really. You're on iWriter a lot, you have surely seen the strange keywords that they want stuffed "as is ") and fade out. It is a rarity for those people to find any success, and thus move to the point where they offer the client more.

              Hey Levintry,

You have already received some real good ideas and a very generous offer to help you out from a fellow warrior. I would just like to add a twist to go about things that comes to mind.

We all know its content (quality content at that..) which drives the very existence of the web. So as a writer there is way much more that you can do than you possibly can think of. Think out of the box, be creative and you will have ideas pouring in. To give you a start here is one idea I would like to leave on your table to think about.

Find a niche that you know a lot about from personal experience, it could be anything. Just make sure you would love writing about it and can bring in your expertise to your writing. Trust me know amount of superficial research will ever match up to quality writing based on personal experiences.

Once you have done the step above, go to Google and look for authority blogs and websites in that niche which are seeking guest writers (you will find many of them). These are the ones that have a good knowledge of the expectations of their audience and will pay for your expertise.

Sure it will take some time and effort, but its all worth it. Most importantly you will be happy doing something that you love.

There can be a lot of variations to my thoughts and I would encourage you to ponder over as many of them as you can to find the sweet spot.

              Hope this helps

              Cheers

    Here, or other webmaster forums.
oDesk (I hire writers there on a weekly basis)
-- Try MediaPiston, their offshoot for content.
And actually... if you're fast enough, Fiverr. I introduced a writer friend of mine to it and recommended 300 word articles for $5 with a 24 hour turn around. After about two weeks she was making over $200/week but the work load became to much for her and she lost her good rating.

    Hi Levintry,

You can promote your writing services either in the Warriors For Hire section or anywhere else outside. Just make sure you comply to the TOS of the website to where you'll be promoting your services.

I have been operating my writing services since 2005. Warriors for Hire is just one of the places where you'll find my services. Why don't you email me one time so we can discuss how I can help you Warrior to Warrior?

That's the Warrior spirit. We're here not only to earn but also to help others make their own money.

    Cheers!

If you're really that interested in copywriting, why not head straight to it? There are plenty of fantastic books (not expensive) that can get you started somewhat decently. Oh, and read every last word of The Gary Halbert Letter while you're at it.

OK. My recent WSO has a list of more than 100 different sites that have job options for you to check out. I know lots of people have already taken full advantage of it because it saves you a ton of time and research.

Other places are vworker.com, elance and odesk although you may not get well paid for jobs in those sites unless you are lucky.

Run your own classified ads in Gumtree and Craigslist.
Email everyone you know and ask if they know anybody needing your services.
You will be surprised how much work that can bring you.
Same goes for your Facebook audience.
Hand out business cards wherever you can.

I have used all of these methods and I get a fair amount of work from each at different times.

Where is a great place to start off writing articles online for money?

Constant-content (good payment), oDesk, Elance, iwritter, Freelancer, and fiver are really good places to start.

I believe oDesk/Elance/Freelancer would be the best option as there are plenty of buyers.

Looks like you've had some good advice form the posts above, however I would like to underline one key point that is mentioned only briefly -

It's all about how you present your service [YOUR OFFER] to the people looking for writing services [TARGETED TRAFFIC] on these sites.

Focus on telling them what they will GET. Not why, or who, or how... but especially WHAT BENEFITS they will GET. Talk about the OUTCOME. Do some research as to how other successful writing services present their offering.

For example - A writer who offers: to "write copy that will convert my traffic into subscribers or buyers" wins my money any day of the week over Jane Austen - I am not looking for novel writers (nor our the majority of your audience), but personally (and most IMers i conject) I do need copy that converts!!!

TIP: Only offer what you can provide, so learn the skill sets necessary if you go into the IM market for instance.

    Hope this helps. ;-)

As you can see, when you ask about writing on a marketing forum, you'll get a lot of advice of where to write "for cheap". Don't do it - you don't have to IF you are a decent writer.

If you start on elance or other freelance site - take care in crafting your profile, be sure to include samples of your writing in your profile and with every bid you place. I used to use a sample that was only a selection of paragraphs in different types of "voice" of articles I had written for my own sites.

Know what YOUR time is worth - know how long it takes you to research, write and polish an article - and price your work accordingly. It is not true that if you price low to begin with you can easily raise prices - those buyers are low end buyers and will just move to another cheap writer. My experience after years of writing is that buyers willing to pay decent prices are easier to work with and tend to be loyal to providers who do good work.

One good plan if you use freelance sites is to identify niches and subjects that you have an interest in or have knowledge of and specialize in those areas. Present yourself as a writer specializing in those areas but also indicate you are open to other subjects as well.

Good luck -there's plenty of work out there.

Exactly! Why people don't get this, I will never understand. I get the mindset, they believe that their content will up the contractor's business and give them more of a budget to pay them, but it doesn't work like that. One of two things happen:

      1. The buyer doesn't know how to use the content you give to them, or how to run a business at all, so they receive zero benefit from your work. They switch to different writers thinking the content is the problem until they burn out and go back to working at McDonald's.

      2. The business actually is successful, and the buyer believes that they can continue to build while paying the same amount for the same value of content. You try to bump your prices and they say "That's great! Good luck, adios!" They believe that any $.01 per word writer can get them the same results. By the time they figure out they were wrong, they're outta money to pay you what you're worth, burn out and go back to working at McDonald's.

TL;DR: Listen to Kay, charge what you are worth from the beginning. If you choose not to heed this advice, keep your lamenting to yourself .
