Great Source of FREE Referral Traffic

Hey guys,

I am looking for a small list of good sources for free referral traffic. The type of websites that I wont have to try and rank but will get traffic. For example, my perfect idea of referral traffic is yahoo answers. Another one is instructables. Wikipedia and wikihow have also been fairly good. I understand that all of these have SEO benefit. However, I am just exploring referral traffic at the moment.

So I would like to add to this list. My website is a "how to" blog so QnA sites are perfect.

Wiki Pages to create:
Wikipedia, Wikihow

Answer Questions relevant to my article:
Yahoo Answers
Wiki Answers
(any others?)

Static websites to always leave helpful comments on:
wikia, wikispaces, openwiki, referata, ehow, howstuffworks, wired, howtodothings, howcast, instructables

Dynamic websites to try leave helpful comments on: (Top 20 blogs/forums,etc for my keyword)
Google Search

Blogs to create:
Squidoo, Hubpages, Weebly, Wetpaint, Posterous, Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogger, Bukisa, Wikispaces, wikidot, webs, diigo, jimdo, livejournal, typepad, multiply, edublogs, angelfire

Video Referral Traffic (my own article videos):
Youtube, Metacafe, Vimeo, Dailymotion

PDF and slides referral traffic:
slideshare, docstoc, scribd

Article Directories:
ArticleBase, EzineMark, SooperArticles, ArticleDashboard, Ezinearticles

RSS Directories:
FeedAge, RSS Mountain, RSS Micro, Feed Agg

Targeted Facebook groups related to your niche.
If you niche was about weight loss, join groups and add value, not spam links

Twitter #hashtags that are related to your niche
If you niche was about weight loss, post updates and add the required hash tag. (needs research)

Any suggestions on social bookmarking traffic? Digg, Reddit, Delicious, Stumbleupon, etc

Any suggestions on other answer type of websites? (like Yahoo Answers)

Any suggestions on other social networks like myspace, tagged, bebo, etc? (just dabbling in that)

P.S: I want to ignore mainstream social websites like Google plus, twitter, facebook, etc as I have a separate plan for those. However, comments are welcome, especially on linkedin.

Great ideas Benjamin. But since my wife is helping me out on this, I would rather she doesnt have to write articles. Granted, I do have a couple public blogs that drive a bit of traffic, but I only really see a SERP benefit, not much referral traffic.

    • I've never gotten a lot of traffic from Hubpages or Squidoo, but perhaps you'd have better luck.

Article writing can be outsourced and you can generate quite a bit of traffic with guest blog posting. I know people that only use guest blog posting and get plenty of traffic from it.

There isn't going to be a large amount of traffic from web 2.0s, but if you build a network of 30 - 50, you will get the SERP benefit and some direct traffic.

I don't use squidoo the same way I used to, but before I bought my hosting and domain name, I made quite a bit of money just using squidoo lenses. They still rank okay if you do them alright and their network does get pretty good traffic, if you take the time to create good a lens.

If I had to focus on the top 10 blogs that generally bring a ton of referral traffic, what would they be? My current list:

Squidoo, Hubpages, Weebly, Wetpaint, Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogspot, Bukisa, wikispaces, wikidot

I think what you have thought is right one, focus on yahoo answer, if you give a good answer you will get traffic all the time and forever..

Next I would say to use facebook fan page, cause if you write good quality content in facebook itself than you will get good traffic from facebook as well, cause facebook fan page gets index in Google as well and they get good ranking in search engine..

Next I will go for Youtube videos, I will make good quality videos whether showing face or doing power point presentation with good quality information related your niche..I hope this helps

    • YouTube marketing is more than just making good videos. Done properly it's a pretty intense effort. You don't just drop a dozen videos on your channel and wait for the traffic to roll in.

There are easier ways to get traffic that are less work.

This is a great thread my friend. I would also like to add Neobux or Clicksense for low cost advertising. It will help you get refferals too. I have used them in the past to get more money and now I am happy with adf.ly. I get around 30-40 subs from 1k views.

Find Facebook groups related to your niche. Find twitter hashtags that are related to your niche. The key is to lead targeted links and communications to targeted pages. You just have to keep tweaking. Affiliate marketing is a MARATHON, bro. It is not a sprint.

I use WebAnswers as well as YahooAnswers. WebAnswers will pay a share of revenue to your AdSense account if you get chosen answers (or questions!), and although they moderate URL's at first on your account, when you've been doing it for a while and got plenty of chosen answers, your URL's don't have to wait to be moderated any more.

Thanks for the rest of your info, great stuff

    Chris
