Anchor Text with Post Penguin and Panda Updates?

Right, I've heard a lot of people talking about Anchor Text when it comes to the updates... But what does this mean?

Does it mean I shouldn't just use my KW in the anchor text? Should I be making anchor text look more natural?

And so on... Help!?

  • I think if links to your sites included the anchor text:

    For example,
    Cars For Sale x 10000

    It would look unnatural.

Google is said to see varied anchor text as more natural.

Examples of anchor text you could use for variety:

    Car Website
    Good Car Websites
    URL
    More Information
    About

Vary the text so you dont look like you've used blackhat techniques for anchor text links.

  • You can use your keyword as the anchor, but try to keep it below 20-30%.

The in-depth case study here explains the anchor percentages used by sites which were affected by Penguin.

  • Aha OK. So basically, make it look like people have actually posted the links and not bots for example. So if I were to have 1000 links up, I'd want it to look like 1000 different people put it up.

    Cool. Thanks guys
  • I would also do a high percentage of just naked url links, especially if your keyword is in your url.

  • And if the KW isn't in the URL. Say the domain is buyusedcars.co.uk and the keyword I am going for is REALLY long tail so... Buy 1994 Ford Focus London.

    • yes that's right.. just stick to diversity of keywords in anchor text, you can follow this rule:
      30% main keyword,
30% cloud keywords like CLICK HERE or GO TO,
      and 40% long tail keywords

Follow this rule and you'll not be hit by penguin..

Of course, you need to pay attention to on page SEO.. on page overoptimization can also hurt your site badly..

      I hope this helps

      Best of luck

  • 30% exact match keyword, 30% variations of the keyword, and 30% other things like "click here" or "go here". This formula seems to work quite well.

    • just gotta alternate the anchor text, and make it look natural. cant always be your keywords
  • I agree with Benjamin above, 1/3 target kw's, 1/3 LSI, 1/3 generic, it's the formula we use and it seems to work quite well....
