What's your #1 source of traffic?

Hey guys!

Just curious what the overall breakdown is for traffic generation that's making you money.

For me, I like paid traffic the best. I feel like I have the most control and can scale it up when its successful. It can be #$%^ing expensive if its not done right though!

PS: I feel like a retard, I didn't put down one of the largest traffic sources out there... SOCIAL MEDIA!

Well, the closest option to social media is "Referral Websites." So just tick that.
#source #traffic

I love using social marketing sites and my favorite is Facebook. I create a FB page on my site and drive traffic.

You should focus on organic traffic and just then focus on other sources. Social media is great, but it will take a huge amount of time before it will start working.

I voted referral traffic - but my main traffic source are actually "people". That may sound a bit weird, but what I mean is that I focus on actual viral traffic (which in the end is traffic from FB, Twitter, referral links etc).

Example: A few weeks ago I launched a new project. Within the first 48h I had traffic from 200+ unique domains (incl. from a few of the biggest blogs on the planet). In just a few weeks it got me 3-4k email subscribers so far, all from viral/referral traffic

Gotta agree with forum traffic. I think it is much more serious form of traffic than most all others. Generally, people on forums are not just killing time or window shopping, they are searching.

Forums are a great source of traffic, not my favorite, but very good. Here's a good tip for you if you like forum traffic...

Go up the food chain with the moderators and become friends with the forum owner to do a solo ad with them. Most forum owners do not do solos and it might take some time but you might have exclusive access.

Solo Ads - this is essentially email advertising.

You do not need your own email list, but only need to find people with large list and you can send mail to this list. People on this list are very targeted.

Solo ads is very effective for me, I also use paid traffic.

For beginners, your can try safe-swaps.com to buy solo ads. There are many people with a large list of 50 000 to 300 000 responsive subscribers. They are selling solo ads for only about $30 for 100 clicks. Note that this number is not open rate which is a lot higher.

For those who are on a budget, your can try State-Of-The-Art-Mailer, ListJoe and ListBonus for FREE Solo Ads. They also have paid options.

Affiliate traffic. Affiliate sending traffic to your sales pages.

For niche websites etc, then referal traffic and Search engine traffic works for me.

I prefer organic traffic. What I normally do is:

    1. Create a branded PDF freebie.
    2. Spend the day looking for blogs in my niche
    3. Contact the blog owners with a copy of the freebie and ask them to let their readers know where they can download it.
    4. Upload the freebie to sites like scribd.com and even file-sharing sites.

I did this recently with a food-related product and managed to get about 500 visitors to my site on the first day of launch with a high rate of return visitors. 500 is not Earth-shattering but it was without spending a penny and it's a good foundation to build on.

    5. I've also started building all my websites with the capability to "login with Facebook" and to update the person's status for their friends to see. It's early days but I expect this viral promotion to work well.

I've also used GtGatsby's approach of proactively seeking out websites that will either publish my content or give away a viral report...this can work VERY well if you put the small amount of time in up-front. So many people seem scared to do this though.

Otherwise my blogs and affiliates bring in the most traffic by far.

Social media is good for me, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. As are 2nd tier PPC networks, cheap clicks and if split test correctly then highly converting.

The main theme here is "Targeted"... Not volume.

Email lists are great if these lists are fresh and
warmed-up. To me, referrals outstrip any kind of
other traffic out there, unless it's traffic that is
      branded to my business/my name.

I normally think of traffic as different grades.
      1) Raw, cold traffic
      2) Warmed Up traffic
      3) Hot, branded traffic

Sometimes, there is no choice but to harvest
"cold" traffic - however, whenever you have the
option, always go for the one nearest to the third
      option.

This is because the 20% of your total traffic
driving efforts giving 80% of your profits is going
to come from between warm and hot traffic.

    I love paid traffic/solo ads.

Can be pretty hard to come across some real quality traffic ie buyers, though.

I mean, why would people be selling solo ads to a list of buyers - they would make way more money selling their own products or affilate products.

Although, solo ads may be 'warmed up' traffic, it's pretty doubtful that it will be a 'hot' group of buyers - unless of course you are paying a pretty hefty cost.

OK, it depends on the site. But on two of my authority sites, the most traffic by far is from return visitors. They account for about a half a million page views a month.

    1) Paid media sources are much more scalable and fast
    2) When purchasing paid media sources you are dealing with a human being on the other end and not some big corporation who really doesn't care that much about you.

For example, 5 years down the line there will always be paid media sources to rent banner ads from or buy a newsletter ad from.

5 years down the line though, Facebook might have started cracking down on affiliates just like Google has.

Going a little off topic now but I'm going to go as far to say that if your main/favorite source of traffic is reliant on a big company liking you like Facebook Ads, Adwords, etc, then you're building your traffic foundation on sand.

The best traffic sources come from dealing with people in a more personal way. Joint Ventures, guest blogging, newsletter ads, banner ads and other paid medias.

PPC, SEO, etc should just be complementary.

    1. Build an email database that I can email responsibly.

Email marketing was always been my main source of traffic. I retired from the IM scene in 2009, but missed the dynamic people and the relatively easy money, so I'm back and I'll follow the same strategies that I used before.

      1. Build an email database that I can email responsibly.
      2. Joint venture with other internet marketers who have email lists

There's lots of ways to get traffic to your website, but I like email marketing the best because it's targeted, immediate, and controllable.
Awesome! Welcome back and... smart game plan...

As much as we talk about "don't put all your eggs in the Search basket", it still looks like SEO is the most relied on traffic generator.

I think you might want to take in consideration how much people make:

I've personally found that most people that rely on SEO for traffic are
broke or making a little bit of money.... most people that I know that make
a lot of money use email marketing... and SEO as bonus traffic..

Referrals and SEO. They go hand in hand because you can recycle your efforts.

Currently I also do get the most of the traffic from search engines but I more and more
think about different methods because these google updates make us really depended on adjusting everything according to google.

we have to understand that google is NOT the internet. I am sure other techniques
like paid traffic (not adwords) could be a worth while thought.

I got my first sale on my web hosting company by an ad I posted on web hosting talk in their offers section. That's where I get most of my traffic from as well as this forum and a few others I post on.

Organic traffic from big G is by far my main source of traffic, and definitely converts better than any other form of traffic.
