What's your #1 source of traffic?

Hey guys!

Just curious what the overall breakdown is for traffic generation that's making you money.

For me, I like paid traffic the best. I feel like I have the most control and can scale it up when its successful. It can be #$%^ing expensive if its not done right though!

PS: I feel like a retard, I didn't put down one of the largest traffic sources out there... SOCIAL MEDIA!

Well, the closest option to social media is "Referral Websites." So just tick that.
#main internet marketing discussion forum #source #traffic
  • I love using social marketing sites and my favorite is Facebook. I create a FB page on my site and drive traffic.

    • You should focus on organic traffic and just then focus on other sources. Social media is great, but it will take a huge amount of time before it will start working.

  • I voted referral traffic - but my main traffic source are actually "people". That may sound a bit weird, but what I mean is that I focus on actual viral traffic (which in the end is traffic from FB, Twitter, referral links etc).

Example: A few weeks ago I launched a new project. Within the first 48h I had traffic from 200+ unique domains (incl. from a few of the biggest blogs on the planet). In just a few weeks it got me 3-4k email subscribers so far, all from viral/referral traffic

    • Still SEO for now but looking to get alot more traffic from other sources in the future - Google is just too fickle for my liking!
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Traffic from forums is a big one if you know how to do it right.

    • Gotta agree with forum traffic. I think it is much more serious form of traffic than most all others. Generally, people on forums are not just killing time or window shopping, they are searching.

  • Same here , trafiic comes from the big G after some seo work is done , but sure facebook , twitter and pinterest have a lot of traffic so dont overview them
  • Post Panda/Post Penguin, I still think SEO is the best thing going. Targeted, Organic Clicks to my site convert the best IMHO.
  • Solo ads work best for me.

    • I must try solo ads... any really good recomadation!

  • Affiliate traffic. Affiliate sending traffic to your sales pages.

For niche websites etc, then referal traffic and Search engine traffic works for me.

Solo ads is when you basically pay people with an email list to email out an offer etc for you, to their list.
  • If you know your conversions solo ads are the fastest way to get results that I am aware of
  • I prefer organic traffic. What I normally do is:

    1. Create a branded PDF freebie.
    2. Spend the day looking for blogs in my niche
    3. Contact the blog owners with a copy of the freebie and ask them to let their readers know where they can download it.
    4. Upload the freebie to sites like scribd.com and even file-sharing sites.

I did this recently with a food-related product and managed to get about 500 visitors to my site on the first day of launch with a high rate of return visitors. 500 is not Earth-shattering but it was without spending a penny and it's a good foundation to build on.

    5. I've also started building all my websites with the capability to "login with Facebook" and to update the person's status for their friends to see. It's early days but I expect this viral promotion to work well.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I have found the best way for me is posting in niche forums. You cut to the chase and have a targeted audience and the posts and links are there permanently.
  • To me, it is still SEO. Solo ad also gives me much but that is behind SEO.
  • Forums are a good way to interact with your readers; promise them something useful as a freebie and invite them to your site to get it. Thus way they know about your site and come back to check your site more often looking for good stuff. Creating good relationships is key in online marketing.
  • Mobile Traffic.

Instant. Easy to test. Simple to track. Fun to optimize.

    • hey ruck. do you use search, display or both?
  • Most of my traffic is solo ads and SEO
  • I've also used GtGatsby's approach of proactively seeking out websites that will either publish my content or give away a viral report...this can work VERY well if you put the small amount of time in up-front. So many people seem scared to do this though.

Otherwise my blogs and affiliates bring in the most traffic by far.

    • The best and fastest source for me are solo ads.
  • I'm trying to stay away from SEO these days. Especially with Google ruining peoples income overnight with a simple algorithm change.

Social media is good for me, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. As are 2nd tier PPC networks, cheap clicks and if split test correctly then highly converting.

    • Yes! They really make a mess of things once in a while! SEO is difficult, but also produces...just very dependent on how many hours you're spending. As far as fast traffic goes, nothing beats the usual suspects...

Socail media for me. I have been using FB PPC after I failed at Google PPC. I have also benefitted from some of the best FB related PPC from WF too. Especially Simple Spencer. He is a pro at finding out of the box ideas.

    • The main theme here is "Targeted"... Not volume.

Email lists are great if these lists are fresh and
warmed-up. To me, referrals outstrip any kind of
other traffic out there, unless it's traffic that is
      branded to my business/my name.

I normally think of traffic as different grades.
      1) Raw, cold traffic
      2) Warmed Up traffic
      3) Hot, branded traffic

Sometimes, there is no choice but to harvest
"cold" traffic - however, whenever you have the
option, always go for the one nearest to the third
      option.

This is because the 20% of your total traffic
driving efforts giving 80% of your profits is going
to come from between warm and hot traffic.

    I love paid traffic/solo ads.

Can be pretty hard to come across some real quality traffic ie buyers, though.

I mean, why would people be selling solo ads to a list of buyers - they would make way more money selling their own products or affilate products.

Although, solo ads may be 'warmed up' traffic, it's pretty doubtful that it will be a 'hot' group of buyers - unless of course you are paying a pretty hefty cost.
  • I have to agree with Mikeyman.Pay for Traffic. Endless supply out there! SEO is great but is not instant and no guarantees.
  • I'm a solo ad man myself. Once you get yourself a good converting squeeze page with a good backend offer it really is a great source of traffic.
  • I'm still getting the bulk of my traffic from SEO.

But luckily I'm not focusing much on those websites anymore. If I was depending on my websites for income, and was getting most of my traffic through good, I'd be scared.

    SEO is wayyy too unstable!

  • Craigslist.

I also get traffic with social media and SEO but craigslist is my number 1 baby.
  • Facebook, banners/link , referalls.

  • SEO but I am really trying to diversify now into other methods such as paid traffic, social media, etc
  • Paid traffic is my favorite. I like PPV and solo ads mostly
  • Return visitors.

OK, it depends on the site. But on two of my authority sites, the most traffic by far is from return visitors. They account for about a half a million page views a month.

My other mature sites have SEO / natural SERP ranking as their best source. Newer ones I drive with solo ads until they reach critical mass.

  • My favorite source of traffic is traffic I generate from my list (obviously). But say I don't have a list, my favorite source of traffic would be paid media meaning banner ads, newsletter ads, list brokering etc.

    1) Paid media sources are much more scalable and fast
    2) When purchasing paid media sources you are dealing with a human being on the other end and not some big corporation who really doesn't care that much about you.

For example, 5 years down the line there will always be paid media sources to rent banner ads from or buy a newsletter ad from.

5 years down the line though, Facebook might have started cracking down on affiliates just like Google has.

Going a little off topic now but I'm going to go as far to say that if your main/favorite source of traffic is reliant on a big company liking you like Facebook Ads, Adwords, etc, then you're building your traffic foundation on sand.

The best traffic sources come from dealing with people in a more personal way. Joint Ventures, guest blogging, newsletter ads, banner ads and other paid medias.

PPC, SEO, etc should just be complementary.

    • Are you looking for plain traffic or targeted traffic?
  • My main source of traffic is SEO but I do paid traffic and I do like paid traffic cause it is fast and easily to find out the result..

I see my bounce rate is really good from referral, I believe they are well research people so that is the bounce rate is good in referral..

Thanks opening up this thread so we can understand whos is using most of their advertising..
  • For list building - solo ads.

For blog traffic - social media.

  • It really depends, for quick traffic forums and blogs. Organic Seo is great but can be unpredictable and cost both time and money if you hire it out. Paid banner advertising on niche sites is good if you can get the right price. I think adwords is too competitive now.
Social media is great but you must keep at it almost like a regular job.

  • SEO is my most favorite.
It's free except when you are building back links and it's targeted.

In my opinion people who are not doing SEO and using solely paid traffic source are not building a long term business.
  • Targeted SEO lasts the longest when done correctly and ppc works the quickest so depends on my goal, patience level, and budget per site.

Re: Be aware Before Buying Traffic
I don't trust any paid traffic sites where every traffic are come from Paid to click sites or autosurf which main reason to get down the site. So please avoid paid traffic sites.

  • These days most of the people are always at social networking sites. Facebook is one of the largest traffic generating website in the world. With many people feeling the fallout of the recent google updates, now is the great time to diversify your traffic sources.
  • Oh the traffic source that gives the best return (money) has got to be... people. Bots seem to give very little to no return. Aliens and ghosts give no return or even impressions. So yeah go with real live humans definatly when looking for traffic.
  • SEO is mine #1 traffic source. I get 60% traffic from search engines.
  • For me, my buyers come from these:

    1. Email "Swaps" Joint Ventures, Solo Ads
    2. Article Marketing
    3. Banner Advertising
    4. CPV Advertising
    5. Traffic From Search Engines
  • To: asiancasanova
Email marketing was always been my main source of traffic. I retired from the IM scene in 2009, but missed the dynamic people and the relatively easy money, so I'm back and I'll follow the same strategies that I used before.

    1. Build an email database that I can email responsibly.
    2. Joint venture with other internet marketers who have email lists

There's lots of ways to get traffic to your website, but I like email marketing the best because it's targeted, immediate, and controllable.

    • I think you might want to take in consideration how much people make:

I've personally found that most people that rely on SEO for traffic are
broke or making a little bit of money.... most people that I know that make
a lot of money use email marketing... and SEO as bonus traffic..
      • [1] reply
  • Referrals and SEO. They go hand in hand because you can recycle your efforts.
  • 1.SEO
    2.Paid Traffic
  • Word of mouth and positive reviews. Its cheap, too.
  • Currently I also do get the most of the traffic from search engines but I more and more
think about different methods because these google updates make us really depended on adjusting everything according to google.

we have to understand that google is NOT the internet. I am sure other techniques
like paid traffic (not adwords) could be a worth while thought.
  • Mainly SEO, referral is the next.
  • I got my first sale on my web hosting company by an ad I posted on web hosting talk in their offers section. That's where I get most of my traffic from as well as this forum and a few others I post on.

  • for me SEO and mailing.
  • 1. Solo ads
    2. ppc
    3. some traffic from SEO
    4. Forums
    5. some article marketing

I find that I like using paid methods the best.
