Bye Bye Google Chrome - Maxthon is MUCH better

I had not even heard of the Maxthon browser until the other day, but let me tell you. It's way faster! You know how google likes to hang on pages and you can't scroll down? Not with Maxthon. It loads the page faster in the first place and doesn't take you hostage waiting for the page to finish loading. Do one more thing with Google. Search for Maxthon. I think you will be thanking me.

(I have no affiliation with Maxthon, like google in some ways, and but not so much in other ways)

I hadn't heard of this browser until reading your post. It looks pretty cool, now to see how it performs.

    Maxthon 3 | Maxthon

edit: Okay, I've been testing it out for a few minutes now. This is really cool, TONS of features, and it IS (at least for now) faster than Chrome. I like it. Thumbs up.

I have just tried it... and yes it's faster than chrome.

    They claimed:

    It's true

I agree, that's a BIG one. I save all my passwords on chrome and I know nothing is going to happen to them or get leaked. Because...well...it's Google!

Another reason I'm not switching is because Google Chrome will always be bigger and better. Let's face it, Google is pretty stable and is going to stay a huge company that has billions of dollars to invest into new technology. However, Maxthon is a little different. Their budget is way smaller and they are keen to make some mistakes with their browser. An amateur mistake on their side can cost YOU a ton.

That's why I'm sticking with Google Chrome.

But I'm obviously not saying there's anything wrong with using Maxthon - these are just my beliefs. :p

I want to try this out at home! I took a look at the site, and just the features made me go wow. It's got an Android version, too. And it's customizable at that. I really do hope that it would work like a charm for a long time. I wonder how Google's going to react to this. Well, not that it's a big deal to them, but what if some other browser like Maxthon surpasses one of their brainchildren, Chrome, as the best browser?

I think this may be a case similar to everyone "assuming" Internet Explorer is the best because it is made by Microsoft. I already made Maxthon by default browser on my Android phone today, but haven't tested enough yet.

It is really amazing that there are browsers that are better and faster than Chrome with Google being so big, but there is some truth to this.

No worries there. If this (or any other competitor) gets too big or popular... Google will surely just buy them out and bury them

I used apps such as LastPass, Session Buddy, and a few more that all make my life so much easier online. It doesn't seem like they are all offered for Maxthon. I am always up for trying new things. However, and some people above have already pointed this out, all browsers are very fast when they first come out. To switch everything over to Maxthon only to have it revert back to Chrome speed in a few months would not be fun!
I'll try it out today and decide from there.

    Thanks for the tip Warrior!

Maxthon has been around for at least a few years now, so I don't think that's going to be an issue.

It's a great browser for normal surfing, and definitely feels a little "snappier" than all the other browsers I've tried. But it lacks support for many popular plugins, so I think FF is still the best "workhorse" browser.

But overall I think we've been getting a bit spoiled comparing the milliseconds "speed" differences between all of the modern browsers. Remember the days of dial-up, when it took 30 - 45 seconds to load a simple text page with just 1 or 2 tiny images?

You can import IE, Firefox and Chrome bookmarks. You can also export to IE favorites to have as a backup. I have been using it for several years and all I can say with the latest version they have outdone themselves.

A very nifty feature is to right click on a tab and select "Add all pages to Favourites" in case you have too many tabs open and want to lighten it up. All the tabs will be saved under the current date for later reference. A good feature to use if say you are searching a particular topic and want to save all those tabs for later.

You can then chose to close all tabs and just keep the ones you are dealing with open.

I love Chrome but I had to stop using it with the update came out. Something's wrong with the flash plugin. Pages won't load, my on-line banking site won't work, youtube videos, etc. I'm on FireFox now and I really don't see what the big deal is with them. It's slow and really just not as intuitive. Even things like the HootSuite Hootlet- a huge time saver for me- doesn't work as well on Firefox.

I'm like a few users above though, I use things like lastpass and others which I doubt will be available on a new browser. I think I'll pass.

It's only the top browser because it's the default browser on a PC and people are computer illiterate.

I ask people do you know what Google Chrome is? You should use it.

Let me give my humble pieces of advice to my fellow Warriors.

I understand that "speed" may always be the number factor that we ideally consider before we switch from one browser to another. We need to do a little "tweaking" to that belief. As for me, "security" or "safe browsing" should be the primary element that everyone should see before you jump off the fence out of excitement because everybody else is just using that new browser. Not everything that happens in unison is worth doing or following.

First, if your browser loads pages slower than usual, you need to check the following:
    1. How many browser add-ons are installed?
Add-ons eat up your computer memory's resources. Thus, it can negatively affect your browsing experience especially if you have a very low RAM capacity.

    2. How many browser windows are open?
Every single "thing" that runs on your computer consumes some RAM bandwidth.

    3. Have you tried clearing/deleting cache and cookies?
For your convenience, you can run the portable ATF Cleaner. You can use ATF cleaner without regard to whatever browser you're using.

    4. Have you checked internet connection type?
If you're using a dial-up connection, please don't expect a speed similar to that of a DSL connection.

    5. Have you checked for possible malware threats by running an updated version of your security software?
If you're getting lots of pop-ups, it's high-time to run your security software that provides real-time protection.

If you have any questions about these items, don't hesitate to let me know. I hope these help.

    JC

    Hi,

lol .... I thought Maxthon is a kind of tonic for marathon runners.

Maxthon uses IE core, just like Opera. A lot of developers, do piggy-back on IE core to create unique built-in browsers for some clients' application. I do it for some clients.

I noticed there are some add-ons offered in Maxthon resembling hackers' tools such as injecting javascripts to web pages, password reader and etc. Makes me take a step back.

So come the typical questions in my mind :
-> are the add-ons safe enough that I can keep my passwords in the browser, without getting dripped to add-on providers?
-> are the add-ons being verified by Maxthon as clean from viruses, trojans, worms and the like?

Right now, I'm only using Maxthon and Chrome to view site designs under development. Both are fast but Maxthon is faster.

However, the trust factor regarding Privacy and Security aren't there yet for both browsers. Their add-on troubles me.

For the moment I trust FF and IE more when signing in to many online accounts.

        Hi "eternalwarrior" and All,

You got to be careful in using newly-released browsers, not specifically Maxthon, because hackers and virus programmers are currently on the lookout for any security vulnerabilities that this browser may have. In short, these bad guys are finding the "soft spots" of the browser from where they can gain entry. Just a friendly caveat for that.

Not installing add-ons alone does not keep you safe on the internet.

        Cheers!

Maxthon makes a portable version too for us folks who only use portable versions, over at:
        portableapps . com

I only use IE to look at websites I build to make sure they appear correctly. I only use FF for the plugins. WAS using Chrome for casual surfing, but it does hang. So thanks OP, heard of Maxthon but never really bothered to try it. Will now though.

I do recognize Firefox as having many add-ons, but most of the time I don't need them. I think a good browser should come pre-loaded with what you need (98%). For example, maxthon does screenshots out of the box. That said, I always have at least a couple of browsers that I use. I am just using Maxthon the most now, as it is faster, saving me time.

You can try the following the boost the performance or to optimize your IE (whatever IE edition it is). Here's how.

Yeah, I was going to say the same exact thing. I love FF only because I can't spell worth a damn.

      Hi --

As the name suggests, I'm Maxthon Karl -- based in Maxthon's San Francisco office. We appreciate everyone's willingness to give us a try. As a company our first mission is to create high performance, stable browsers with a great out of the box experience that regularly outperform the big guys. So far, so good!

Maxthon has been around in one incarnation or another since 2000. Then it was an IE-shell browser. Maxthon 3 -- initially launched in 2010 -- is an entirely different beast. For starters, it actually uses both Webkit and the IE engine -- 'trident.' We have a webkit r&d team that has vastly improved its speed -- and webkit is the default engine for Mx3. BUT, as we've all experienced, some websites are still optimized for IE -- and that's where using trident comes in. (In the browser this is called 'retro' mode. Webkit is 'turbo' mode. Look for the lightning bolt in the right of the address bar to confirm you're in turbo mode.)

As far as security and developer tools go, most of you would be pleasantly surprised. Maxthon's largest customer base is in Asia including mainland China. The security landscape there is pretty tough. As a result, Maxthon has tobe quite secure and stable. We wouldn't have upwards of 400 million downloads in China if that weren't the case.

We wince when we say it internally, but we're the best browser you've never heard of. Now, we're trying to change that.

Our strength in large part derives from the long-standing dialogue we've had with our community -- now found in more than 140 countries -- and I'd like to invite all of you to participate in that dialogue in any way you might see fit to do so.

We are particularly interested in which plugins and features you'd like to see.

Thanks to all for considering Maxthon!

Greetings Maxthon. I found a possible bug.

When I tried to "magnify" a page (specifically backpage . com) the fonts would not magnify, actually makes the wording smaller as you try to magnify. Images would magnify, but not the fonts. I then checked FF and IE and they do magnify the page correctly.

        Anyone else have this problem?

Sometimes you need to read the "mice type" I call it, of a webpage, so I feel this is a needed part of a browser.

      How secure is it?
Last I checked with paypal and other payment systems the only two who met the security standard were Internet Explorer & Firefox. That's right Chrome didn't make it for being secure.

I've been using the latest version of Maxthon over a year. I have no serious complaints. The first few versions of Maxthon were popular in China because the early versions could get around the Great Firewall of China. I'm not sure but I think Maxthon once was the most popular browser in China. I don't know if it still is.

You people who compare browsers with each other miss an important point: you can have more than one browser on the same machine. If there are features you like better on Browser A, then use Browser A. When you want to switch over the Browser B, either kill Browser A or minimize Browser A and use Browser B. I have five browsers on my machine right at this moment. At one time I had 4 of the five running simultaneously. It slowed things down a bit but not intolerably. These days I usually run a max of 2 browsers simultaneously for no good reason other than I don't want to confuse myself too much by having too many windows. Bottom line: you do not have to be monogamous with browsers.

Another browser I like is Comodo Dragon, which also has a lot of useful features.

One of the writers above wrote that there are hackers which like to break into Brand X browsers (like Maxthon). I doubt it. The number and percentage of people using Brand X browsers is tiny. Less than 10% of all computer users. If you're a hacker who wants to make money by hacking into accounts you won't waste a lot of resources trying to hack into the Maxthons of the world. The real money and the real number of users is in IE, FF and Chrome.

      Domainarama,

I'd like to proactively assume that I am the "one-of-the-writers-above."

Ok, let me tell you this but I don't want to appear like a cocky Warrior. Just so you'll know where my words and knowledge on this topic are coming from.

I was a Partner Tech Lead of Microsoft's PCSafety Technical Support (it's now Microsoft Answer Desk). What was one of my responsibilities? It was to find solutions to any security or system vulnerability issue, come what may, when everybody else in our department, except for my higher-ups, does not know the answer. Meaning, when Tier 1 to 3 support engineers are all yelling on the phones for an emerging technical issue, I'm the call-to-guy. I was also responsible in coming for up for solutions right before the problem happens.

Enough of talking about myself. At least, you now know that I'm not a self-proclaimed-techy-wannabee.

Now, hackers don't act only when their possible host is in an "in-demand" mode. They will never wait for an application to become the sought-after application right before they think of ways on how to get into our computer systems. They study it in advance. So, what I was telling on my previous post is nothing but a proactive measure/friendly-reminder just to be careful enough.

I hope this explains it all.

I have to agree. How many times have their been Wordpress exploits? One of the reason people use our software (phpLD) is it has a near immaculate record on security. Something tells me Maxthon has a much better record than any of the popular browsers for the same reason.

I downloaded Maxthon to try, but I didn't feel it was any faster than the Opera browser I use. I also didn't find the interface, all the buttons, and the overall look of it to be intuitive. I found it to be rather ugly looking and cluttered. It also didn't seem that well layed out within the menu system, and I felt there was too many unneeded accessories.

Opera is my browser of choice, and I feel it's head over heels above the competition. It's so easy to customize to your liking, you can make it completely transparent so it looks seamlessly apart of your background, it's very fast, and they have a great help forum. So I'll stick with them like I've been doing for 5 years now.

I agree with having several browswers on hand. For example, if you have two different login areas for the same website, it can be helpful to login with two browsers. Also, it can be more secure to only do your banking with one browser and nothing else. I don't use IE however.

I here people talk about trusting IE or Chrome, but when you think about Microsoft and Google, are these companies that everyone trusts? They certainly have been the target of numerous privacy lawsuits and even security breaches. Maxthon has been around a long time and does not share in these problems.

Try to check out this comparative review for Maxthon 3. I am not 100% sure how reliable this site's comparative reviews are but it's worth checking, I think so.

I use Chrome mainly because of it's
    user-friendliness to web designing...
    Especially its Inspect Elements
    function, which is really useful.

Also, it's far more secure than any
    browser. I might try Maxthon,
    thanks for the heads up.

Had never hard of it, thanks for the info!

It seems pretty fast, comparable to Opera or maybe a tad faster on some sites.

I use FF, Chrome, Opera and IE on a daily basis (IE mainly for testing out sites I'm developing, coz I'm not a fan) and Chrome started acting weird after the last update. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it works fine now.

Maxthon is a nice addition for general surfing and it handles playback of Youtube videos very well. All in all, impressed!

After reading this thread and seeing the raving reviews for Maxthon, I downloaded it and used it for three weeks. At first, it loaded a lot faster than Chrome. But after a week and a couple of days, it started acting up. The page hangs for a couple of seconds. And I can't move the cursor while it does so. And I find it slower when downloading files.

Or maybe it's just me. But I still find Chrome safer, easier, faster. and more convenient to use.

Well, after toying around with Maxthon, found out what the problem was (why it wouldn't magnify fonts on Backpage).

Clicked the "lightning" icon, to the right of the URL window, it says "switch browser mode". Did that and it magnifies correctly. Will be staying with this browser now until I find another problem.

      So far, I like it.

Mehh just installed it, and for me it's slower then Chrome.
But maybe it works differently on super fast computers? (because I got a home build $2000.- extremely fast PC with fiber glass internet)

Removed it immediately after comparing the two.

And no I do not work for Google Chrome lol....

I have seen MaxThon before but I don't install it when I know that it uses Trident rendering engine.

I personally use either Opera(I think this is underated) or Chrome.

What's wrong with the Trident engine, if I may ask?

I too think that Opera is underrated, perhaps because it's European. I used to use it and liked it a lot, but then got some serious problems with it and stopped using it.

I too use Chrome as my first browser, but its shortcoming can be annoying. I even had to write a special article for the visitors to my site because of it.

I have in the past switched backwards and forwards between browsers, as I am never fully satisfied with any of them. I used to only use Chrome, but got fed up with it over time and also am not comfortable with the privacy issues like someone mentioned earlier.

I presently use IE 9 which I am finding to be a real pleasure to use and it's faster than Chrome IMO. Funnily enough my present backup browser is MaxThon which I only found out about recently, it's certainly slightly quicker then Chrome.

Having taken a quick look as Maxthon does not officially support Lastpass which I use for my passwords, it is a no go.

I have tried most of the top browsers, Firefox, IE, Opera, Chrome and have settled on Chrome for my business and Opera for personal browsing, yup I keep my personal and business bookmarks separate.

I would never trust a browser to secure my passwords as that is not what they are designed for.

Kind of funny, but I was about to login to Warrior and follow up to say Maxthon is still doing much better than Chrome from a dependability standpoint. Chrome crashed several times for me today and has a way of getting slow. Maxthon has been running for days and is fast and hasn't crashed once. Chrome especially loses out when loading pages with lots of ads and media content.

Chrome is very heavy and takes up most of my processor, that's why i avoid it. I just discovered Maxathon, it's great. But chrome still rules with most of web designing languages support, CSS3, HTML5 and not to mention it's networking features such as Chromecast, Google play, e.t.c.
