Bye Bye Google Chrome - Maxthon is MUCH better

I agree, that's a BIG one. I save all my passwords on chrome and I know nothing is going to happen to them or get leaked. Because...well...it's Google!

Another reason I'm not switching is because Google Chrome will always be bigger and better. Let's face it, Google is pretty stable and is going to stay a huge company that has billions of dollars to invest into new technology. However, Maxthon is a little different. Their budget is way smaller and they are keen to make some mistakes with their browser. An amateur mistake on their side can cost YOU a ton.

That's why I'm sticking with Google Chrome.

But I'm obviously not saying there's anything wrong with using Maxthon - these are just my beliefs. :p

I think this may be a case similar to everyone "assuming" Internet Explorer is the best because it is made by Microsoft. I already made Maxthon by default browser on my Android phone today, but haven't tested enough yet.

It is really amazing that there are browsers that are better and faster than Chrome with Google being so big, but there is some truth to this.

No worries there. If this (or any other competitor) gets too big or popular... Google will surely just buy them out and bury them

That is my concern. Security. It's great to be fast, but security is #1.

I tried it but still much prefer Google Chrome. It is fast but so is Chrome. I am always leery of new things until they have been out for a while.

Maxthon has been around for at least a few years now, so I don't think that's going to be an issue.

It's a great browser for normal surfing, and definitely feels a little "snappier" than all the other browsers I've tried. But it lacks support for many popular plugins, so I think FF is still the best "workhorse" browser.

But overall I think we've been getting a bit spoiled comparing the milliseconds "speed" differences between all of the modern browsers. Remember the days of dial-up, when it took 30 - 45 seconds to load a simple text page with just 1 or 2 tiny images?

IE underrated? Its still the top browser in the world. I prefer firefox, only because of the tools they provide like firebug

YES. I see the same thing happening to any new cool application in general, especially browsers. FF used to be so sleek and I just loved it, but now I only tolerate it because of some plug-ins I want.

I have the same question mind. Is Maxthon really safe?

Just to be safe, I am not using any add-ons on Maxthon.

I tried IE again last night, and no way I am going back to that. IE may have improved security, but the history of security is abominable and the slowness to load up along with the toolbar nightmare makes it an absolute "no no" for me anytime soon.

I do recognize Firefox as having many add-ons, but most of the time I don't need them. I think a good browser should come pre-loaded with what you need (98%). For example, maxthon does screenshots out of the box. That said, I always have at least a couple of browsers that I use. I am just using Maxthon the most now, as it is faster, saving me time.

Maxthon has been around in one incarnation or another since 2000. Then it was an IE-shell browser. Maxthon 3 -- initially launched in 2010 -- is an entirely different beast. For starters, it actually uses both Webkit and the IE engine -- 'trident.' We have a webkit r&d team that has vastly improved its speed -- and webkit is the default engine for Mx3. BUT, as we've all experienced, some websites are still optimized for IE -- and that's where using trident comes in. (In the browser this is called 'retro' mode. Webkit is 'turbo' mode. Look for the lightning bolt in the right of the address bar to confirm you're in turbo mode.)

As far as security and developer tools go, most of you would be pleasantly surprised. Maxthon's largest customer base is in Asia including mainland China. The security landscape there is pretty tough. As a result, Maxthon has tobe quite secure and stable. We wouldn't have upwards of 400 million downloads in China if that weren't the case.

We wince when we say it internally, but we're the best browser you've never heard of. Now, we're trying to change that.

How secure is it?
Last I checked with paypal and other payment systems the only two who met the security standard were Internet Explorer & Firefox. That's right Chrome didn't make it for being secure.

Ok, let me tell you this but I don't want to appear like a cocky Warrior. Just so you'll know where my words and knowledge on this topic are coming from.

I was a Partner Tech Lead of Microsoft's PCSafety Technical Support (it's now Microsoft Answer Desk). What was one of my responsibilities? It was to find solutions to any security or system vulnerability issue, come what may, when everybody else in our department, except for my higher-ups, does not know the answer. Meaning, when Tier 1 to 3 support engineers are all yelling on the phones for an emerging technical issue, I'm the call-to-guy. I was also responsible in coming for up for solutions right before the problem happens.

Enough of talking about myself. At least, you now know that I'm not a self-proclaimed-techy-wannabee.

Now, hackers don't act only when their possible host is in an "in-demand" mode. They will never wait for an application to become the sought-after application right before they think of ways on how to get into our computer systems. They study it in advance. So, what I was telling on my previous post is nothing but a proactive measure/friendly-reminder just to be careful enough.

I have to agree. How many times have their been Wordpress exploits? One of the reason people use our software (phpLD) is it has a near immaculate record on security. Something tells me Maxthon has a much better record than any of the popular browsers for the same reason.

Interestingly, Google Analytics does not even track Maxthon. Maybe they are scared.

I downloaded Maxthon to try, but I didn't feel it was any faster than the Opera browser I use. I also didn't find the interface, all the buttons, and the overall look of it to be intuitive. I found it to be rather ugly looking and cluttered. It also didn't seem that well layed out within the menu system, and I felt there was too many unneeded accessories.

Opera is my browser of choice, and I feel it's head over heels above the competition. It's so easy to customize to your liking, you can make it completely transparent so it looks seamlessly apart of your background, it's very fast, and they have a great help forum. So I'll stick with them like I've been doing for 5 years now.

I agree with having several browswers on hand. For example, if you have two different login areas for the same website, it can be helpful to login with two browsers. Also, it can be more secure to only do your banking with one browser and nothing else. I don't use IE however.

Yes, it is open source and has built-in adblock features.

Well, after toying around with Maxthon, found out what the problem was (why it wouldn't magnify fonts on Backpage).

Clicked the "lightning" icon, to the right of the URL window, it says "switch browser mode". Did that and it magnifies correctly. Will be staying with this browser now until I find another problem.

So far, I like it.

I too think that Opera is underrated, perhaps because it's European. I used to use it and liked it a lot, but then got some serious problems with it and stopped using it.

I too use Chrome as my first browser, but its shortcoming can be annoying. I even had to write a special article for the visitors to my site because of it.

I already downloaded Maxthon recently just as a backup browser but haven't really used it much. Still mainly using Google Chrome. I'll have to spend some time with Maxthon after reading this thread

Well I use Chrome because it allows me to sync my bookmarks/history everywhere I go, whether I'm on my home desktop, laptop, work pc or on my Android phone.

FF hasn't been giving me any problems lately, but it has in the past. I will give this browser a try. I have never liked Chrome very much.
