Social network marketing is a great way to get traffic to blogs. Try to find other forums and blogs in your niche and post there, piggyback off of the traffic of other sites. Put up a few youtube videos in the same niche as your blog and add them as relevant videos to more popular videos.

There are literally thousands of ways to get traffic, you just have to try some out and see what works the best for your site.

The way I or someone else generates traffic to their blogs may not be the best way for you to generate traffic to your blog.

Really your question doesn't have enough information to get any responses that are actually going to help you out. You're just going to get people mentioning all the different traffic methods that exist in the world.

I am completely with @UptonGoodwin. Knowing your website target demographics is vital in determining how best to generate traffic to it.

The way I have generated traffic to my blog which I set up only in late October 2011, is to continually be writing content every day of the week , three or four posts a day will get you noticed by Google as an updating blog. Ones that don't update posts every day won't get much traffic from Google. Take a leaf out of the newspaper blogs (although they have plenty of reporters putting news on there!) the amount of blog posts every day will determine the traffic from Google, you really don't even need to advertise!

Sometimes throw in controversial viewpoints, I like this a lot, it gets traffic, people tweet the hell out of it as well as Facebook it to the social media.

I hope this viewpoint helps you some and good luck with the blog.

This is good advice. You really don't need to go building backlinks all day long. I write 3 posts a day for my blogs within the first month. It takes a couple of hours but hey, I would have to spend that time using other methods to generate traffic anyway, so i'd rather spend that time updating my blog. After a month or so you will begin to get a lot of traffic. Your posts will also be indexed within a couple of minutes every time you write one, after the initial month.

Here is my way generating traffic to my blog..

    1) Engage with forum by helping people
    2) Writing high quality content so people comes from search engine and if they like they do share it
    3) Engaging in social network (not by promoting my blog links) but quality helpful content information so they will visit my website to see who am I?
    4) And create my brand awareness by helping people with quality information

I am just focusing on this above four and which is more than enough getting quality traffic..

See don't just look for traffic, look for quality traffic, 10 quality traffic is far better than 100 traffic..

I hope this make sense and I hope this helps you..

one of the most effective ways is to leverage your list and send them to the odd blog post

this helps in lots of ways such as: you will get more people socially share your content, more comments, plus they may look around your site more and leave comments and share other posts too

of course you do need a list but it works well

apart from using a list i try and create plenty of link bait

some of my blog posts that i have created have taken me like 6 hours to write lol. its worth it though because you stand a much better chance of gaining lots more free links to your site. of course it has to be quality content you cant just write a 5k word blog post of garbage and expect plenty of links from it

    you need killer content

post regular too, it keeps the spiders coming back to your site

blog comments - your not going to gain massive traffic fast but with regular blog comments you will slowly start to see extra traffic

and guest blogging if you really want to generate a lot of free traffic, plus you gain plenty of awesome link juice

I get most of my traffic from Pinterest.

Just post your site's interesting HD pics at Pinterest. You will get easy traffic, although the traffic is not very targeted.

I get almost all of my content from google by creating good content and by using my easy link building method. It takes about 3 months from building a website before I start seeing the traffic, though.

I would suggest you what MacMiller said. Try to promote your blog through forums/blogs which have the same niche with your blog. This way you will get traffic from people who are really interested on your content. I didn't try youtube videos to drive traffic to a site but it must be good.

Also updating your content will help you get Google traffic, Tony Dean couldn't say it better, Google appreciates good and hard work.

Another way to get more traffic is to do guest bloging.

It will help to attract targeted traffic and you can brand yourself as well.

First of all optimize your site for repeat visitors. Make sure you have a free report / interview relating to your blog topic, and put at least 2 different signup forms on the blog - top right of the side bar and underneath every post.

Then you need to make it easy for people to share the content via facebook / twitter, again big buttons that encourage sharing.

With that done when you do create a new post it's time to email your subscribers and tell them about the new content. I would only post twice a week at most on a personal blog as it gives the post a chance to spend time on the frontpage and get some comments - nothing worse than a blog with hundreds of posts and no comments.

The other things mentioned here are good, commenting and retweeting the other blogs in your niche is a great way to build a relationship.

Guest blogging is also cool, but you will need to have some quality posts and formed a relationship with the bigger blog before asking to get published.

Overall you just need to stick with it and show passion. For example if you're blogging about the IM niche you've just got a whole list of different ways to generate traffic to blog about.

Link exchange is also one of the effective methods of driving quality traffic to your blogs. You will of course have to settle for link exchange with related and relevant blogs for better results.
