Does a site with .net turn you off?

I started out with a blog- and when i wanted to switch to a site the only available option was .net so i took it. I worked really hard driving traffic to it. A few people have commented to me that having a .net is something that turns pple off and i should def change that.
I just purchased a new site with a similar name .com- do you think this is something so important that i should change it? is it a big deal to change?
Thanks

Does a site with a .com turn you on ?

I'd personally aim for a .com, mainly because people always remembers.com

but a.net or not does not turn me off

I personally like .net sites, and some even look better with it.

I wouldn't go through the hassle of changing the domain name to get the .com.

Nothing really. It's useless content that turns people off, regardless of the extension.

I think anyone in IM could be biased if asked that. We all know .com .net and .org as well as many of the other domains. However people not in IM may not be as familiar as ourselves and have a different perspective on domains.

The only way to tell for sure is to rank both a .net and a .com domain and test the CTR. Either that or ask as many people in your niche as possible. If you have an email list, split test sending them an identical email copy with just the url being different. If you don't have a list, try the test in a blog post. This might not be definitive but will give you an idea.

No .com/ .net is the same. Just take themeforest.net as an example, they become the biggest Template Marketplace with .net domain.

But .com domain website is surely priced higher when you sell it at Flippa.

.net is not that bad.. From my experience people don't love .info that much. Of curse .com is more famous but a .net domain name is not that bad...

Excellent reply Brandon. What he said is true. Perosnally I would go for .net anytime because recently I am seeing a huge increase with the .net in some niches.

Were those people by any chance internet marketers?

If they were, then take no notice unless your niche is itself connected with internet marketing (i.e. unless those people are representative of your customers).

What matters is what your own visitors and customers think, not what other marketers think.

I used to have a "marketer's perspective" on this question, and think that ".com" was the best sort of domain to have ("for credibility") and that nothing else was as good. When I asked my customers/subscribers, it turned out that I had the whole thing completely wrong. They don't like .com domains (for affiliate marketing, when they're looking primarily for information), because they think that makes you come across like "just another marketer" and that "selling stuff" is your primary motivation. And that's bad for your credibility. The two domain extensions my customers (across a range of 8 niches) dislike are .com and .biz. Because they're the "commercial-looking ones".

So don't believe everything people tell you, on this subject. It doesn't matter what "other marketers" think.

It makes no difference at all and like Alexa said, people outside of IM wouldn't even notice. I don't notice or care what extension a domain is. I personally stick to buying .co, .com, .net, .info and .org. Any of those do well for me.

I prefer a .com domain because of its intrinsic value, not because it would turn people off. A .com domain command a higher market value than a .net.

This is what I and some people I know do sometimes. Use a .net domain for a squeeze page and a .com for the sales page. i.e. easy.net (for the squeeze page) then easy.com for the sales page. I could do it differently too. i.e. easy.com (squeeze page) then easy.com/buy for the sales page. The choice is yours...
