Is it possible to add too many backlinks?

I purchased a subscription to Angelas backlink packets last Friday and duly got started building links to my site. My page was originally indexed as the last entry on Page 2 of Google for my keyword and by Sunday my site had jumped up 4 places. Since then I've added somewhere between 5 and 10 links a day and now by Tuesday morning my site has gone straight back to where it started at the bottom of page 2.
Should there be some kind of strategy to my link building campaigns? I've heard people mention that if you add too many links it can make Google suspicious and actually make your position worse. Any thoughts? I'm scared to add any more links at this point in case the situation gets worse!

    I think you will find what's known as the "google dance" is responsible. Google seems to do this all the time, you will more than likely find your site will settle back into a higher position in the next few days.

    Phew! That's reassuring, do you think I should keep adding links at the rate of 5-10 a day? Could I get away with more? Or play it safe? My site is quite new, the URL is only about 20 days old.

    Just keep adding more links gradually.

    And you might want to mix the links type, don't rely on one source of links - if all web2.0 links, you are at some level of risk.

    Make sure your anchor tags are different. You could get banned by Google if all your links are of one anchor text.

    By just publishing your article widely to many article directories you can build a huge a back links suddenly. But the problem is the search engine may think your website link as spam.

    So if you increase you back links gradually, then it is good.

      I am under the impression that Google doesn't like it when too many links are added too quickly - but I take that to mean something like 500 - 1000 in a week which is what you can get with certain submitting services..

      I use Angelas links, but I take two weeks to do them and I mix them up over several sites.

        In my opinion the amount of backlinks isn't as important as the consistency of them.

        For example, its fine to have 100 backlinks a day.. as long as its an ongoing thing.

        You will run into trouble when you have 1000 one day, and then none for the next few weeks..

          Right. As fellows suggested above, everything depends on the continuity and the graduality. I also use Angela's backlings and the result is fine.

    great tips guys, I am also using angelas backlinks, I havnt used the march packets yet, lets hope they work well. I hate the google dance! up, down, up, down!!

    Hey chameleon,

    To answer your original question about having too many backlinks .... The answer is no, you can't have too many.

    BUT what you want to do is be consistent about backlinking. Say, you don't want to get 5,000 backlinks in a day, and then none for a few months. Also as someone else mentioned, you want to use different anchor texts for them if you are using anchor text links. I'm not sure that you will get banned by Google for using the same anchor, but I do know Google discounts them after so many.

    If you are linking with your URL, make sure you either use the www dot, or leave it off. Don't use both or your site's PR will get split, and you don't want that to happen.

    As noted above, it will take some time for your site to settle down to a steady PR. Listings in the serps change all the time though.

    I think it's important not to get incoming links from just a few sources.

    Links should come from a wide variety of sources.

    I also think activities like bookmarking a new website which has hardly any traffic is not a good idea. As traffic grows so the number of bookmarks can grow.

    I approach link building as a game.......I put goals based on numbers of new forums joined, new blogs commented on, new directories found....etc.

    I'm trying to find 3-5 new sources per week. RELEVANCY is important.

    Look for sites that use similar KW in their metas. For example, I try to find sites that have KW = music, Disc Jockey, DJs, wedding, karaoke

    But its OK to surf webmaster forums: Google has decided that SEO is relevant to EVERY WEB SITE. Just pick the ones with DO FOLLOW.

    My philosophy is to MAKE A CONTRIBUTION to every site that I join.

    Its served me very well.....every day I make another friend or contact, from one of my blog comments or forum posts.
