Need Some Advice On One Of My Domains...

Hey warriors,

A few months back I discovered in my domain portfolio a domain that I had completely forgotten about.

The domain is DaytonsBestPizza.com

I purchased this domain about 4 years ago for a project then got sidetracked and forgot all about it until recently. I feel like I should do something with it but I'm not exactly sure what.

A few months ago I contacted the owner of Marions, a local chain that has actually been voted Dayton's best pizza and has about 20 locations....the owner wasn't interested.

Ideally I would like to lease or sell the domain name but I'm open to suggestions.

I've considered creating a portal but this would be really time consuming and there's no guarantee it would be profitable.

Another idea I had was to target a new pizza place in the area trying to make a name for themselves.

I'm certain this domain name has value to at least one local pizza place but I'm not exactly sure how I should proceed.

What are your thoughts?

Zachary, one way of making the best use of this valuable domain would be setting up a local Pizza directory. Then monetize it by selling ad spaces on the index/landing page.

Why not review Pizza companies/restaurants in Daytona, using local SEO to gain traffic. I could imagine the site could take advantage of social too. People would love to voice their opinions on their favorite pizza place. Could try monetize with ad space or collect an email list to try to sell to pizza places in Daytona.

As suggested, a directory would be a good idea. You should look into building your own directory empire for the Dayton area. I have a couple domains that could help you out.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

  • I don't think it is worth pursuing any direction with this unless you are thinking about opening a pizza place in Daytona. There are no exact match searches for your domain. There are only 62 exact match phrases that contain Dayton Pizza, most of them are for specific pizza places, and the highest search volume is 320 with most under 100. There really is no search traffic here.

If you wanted to spend a little time, you could try contacting each of the pizza places just to see if they are interested. But my experience has been if a restaurant doesn't already have a website, then they are probably not interested.

I am speaking from experience. I own menuflavors.com and have about 30,000 restaurants and their menus in my directory. I talked with 100's of restaurant owners. I tested selling them a site and giving them their own unique address for free to share their menu with their customers. I did not have many takers.

The real money in any restaurant directory site seems to be in getting orders. There is a guy who created a pizza site that helps pizza restaurants get orders. A bigger name is this space is GrubHub. They get orders for their clients and take a cut of each order.

If you have time enough and feel interest to work on that, just work on that. You will something better by increasing the traffic to your site. But if you are not sure about the feedback, just sell that out.

I agree too, a pizza directory would be very good, as soon as it gets popular you can sell ad space as DonMarketer said. If there are a lot of pizza market on your town it will work very good. You can add information about delivery, open hours etc.

I think in all honesty you should consider making a niche site around pizza restaurants in the Dayton area. You could use nothing but free sources of traffic and focus on great SEO marketing to get the top keywords for the niche. I would venture to say there probably is no site devoted solely to grading and ranking the best Local pizza is in the area. You could virtually come into this market and if you take away your expectation for immediate profit, sweep it in its entirety. If you do this correctly, the owner of that pizza joint that turned you down will be pretty much groveling to get a good ranking on your site.
If you weren't particularly nice, you could downgrade that pizza joint on your niche site for him having the audacity to not purchase the domain when you offered it to them, but of course I would never recommend that and I think you're pretty cool guy and all that good jazz :p.

The way I see it, you could become the sole provider of all things pizza information related for the area. You could incorporate maps along with your professional opinion and customer ratings on the site. And you could rank them by customer service price and taste. The options are almost unlimited on what you could do. And think about the long-term revenue.. Direct advertising, indirect advertising, business endorsements and events hosted under the websites name... So many possibilities

I wanted to give you some good ideas for you to get started on , I hope that helps out my friend

You could make a directory site like some warriors suggested here. My only concern with this is chasing up advertising.

The other option is to sell it or lease it out to a local pizza shop.

With leasing you are making a passive income, while with selling you are going to be selling your "asset".

My personal preference would be to set up a simple squeeze page to collect a list, and rank the site.

Then lease it out to a local pizza operator.

They're not going to be interested in the domain as much as they are going to be interested in the list of people in the local area that like pizza!

    Hope that helps!
